Description

UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES T. ROWE, OF NORWALK, CONNECTICUT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,200, dated January 30, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I, CHARLES T. ROWE, of Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Forming Hat-Brims, of which the following is a specification:
N (mire and Object of the Invention.
bottom plate.
General Description.
The drawing, Figure l is a plan view of the bed-plate. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the former, showing the plunger and holes in the two plates and the lever.
The bed-plate A is formed with the upper face to correspond to the required shape of the fiat part of the brim, and a hole or matrix is made in the center of the size required to receive the circumference of the lower edge of the prepared hat-body. The upper pressingplate B is shaped on the under face to correspond with the face of the lower plate A, and a hole is made in the same to receii e the plunger C. This upper plate B slides up and down on the vertical guide-rods D by the action of the lever E. The plunger C is made of the size required of the inner circumference of the hat-body, and is permanently attached to the lower end of the main rod G, and the upper end of this rod G is connected to the operating pressure-lever E by a pin and joint, I, and the back end of the lever is connected to the standard K by the joint L. A cross-piece, M, is attached to the top of the upper plate B, to operate the same when actuated by the rise and fall of the pressing-lever E, and slides up and down the rods D D, which keeps the same in its direct position.
To operate the former, the cloth or felt fabric is prepared in a plain piece of the requisite size, and then a hole is cut or stamped in the center of the size required for the circumference of the hat to be used. It is then laid on the lower plate A, so that the hole will be directly under the plunger, and will project about half an inch over the edge of the lower hole, to form the flange or turn-up of the inner edge. The plunger is then pressed down by the lever, and the flange is formed ready to receive the hat-body.
What I claim as my invention is The machine for shaping hat-brims, consisting of the bed-plate A, the pressing-plate B, the plunger C, and the lever E, constructed and operating as and for the purpose specified.
