IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-LOADING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 123,146, dated January 30, I872.
Specification describing anew andImproved Oar-Loading Machine, im'ented by SAMUEL J. BINGHAM, of Garlandsville, in the county of Jasper and State of Mississippi.
The object of this invention is to provide ready and convenient means for loading railroad cars with wood and coal or freight; and it consists in a suitab]y-constructed frame and a lifting-platform, so constructed and arranged that the wood, coal, or freight is made to slide from the platform onto the tender or car of a railroad train, the construction, arrangement, and operation being as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 rep resents a front elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the machine taken on thr line it .70, Fig. 1.

A is the frame, consisting of four post-s, B, mortised into short sills C. D is a beam or timber, which connects together the two sills. ()n the top of the posts are short plates E E. F is the platform, which is attached to the timber G. On the ends of this timber are pivots or journals which are received by boxes or holes in the plates E E. The platform is nearly balanced on these pivots. It is fastened in ahorizontal position when receiving the coal, wood, or freight, and it is tilted or upset by means of the rope H or by the lever I, which is connected to the platform by the bar J, as seen in the drawing. K is the fulcrum-stand of the lever. The rope H passes over apulley, L, on the cross-bar M, which latter is supported by the stands N N on the plates E E. O is a portion of the platform, which is attached to the main part by hinges F F. This portion 0 is turned up and fastened at a right angle with F to prevent the wood or coal from falling between the machine and the car when loading the former. The machine is situated near the railroad track, so thatthe contents of theplatform may be dumped directly into the tender or onto a car, as may be desired.
The platform may be made ofan y desired size, so as to contain sufficient coal or wood to supply the tender. The platform beingloaded, when it is used for transferring fuel to the tender, all that is necessary is to bring the tender into the proper position and dump the contents of the loaded platform into it. With this machine much hard labor and time are saved.
I do not limit or confine myself to the precise form or arrangement of any of the parts described. as they may be varied in many ways without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The tilting platform F and frame A, combined and arranged substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the platform E, the bar M, pulley L, and rope H, arranged as shown and described, for the purposes described.
3. The lever I and connecting-bar J, in com bin-ation with the platform F, as and for the purposes described.
4. The hinged part 0, in combination with the tilting platform F, as and for the purposes described.
