IMPROVEMENT IN MILK-SAFES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,123, dated January 30, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J oHN M. PERKINS, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and Sta-te of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Milk Safe and Refrigerator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of the same.

SPECIFICATION.

Figure 1 is a front View of the safe with the doors open. Fig. 2 is an end view with the doors open.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.

The purpose of this invention is to provide a convenient safe and cooler for the protection and preservation of milk, fruit, meats, provisions, &c., and which safe is provided with swinging shelves, whereby articles placed thereon can be swung out from the safe, thereby rendering them more accessible to those in want of them.

A further and more full description of the safe is as follows, viz.: The drawing, Fig. 1, represents a front view of the safe, which consists of the sides A, top B, and bottom C, mounted upon legs D. Said safe is divided into two compartments, E F, of which compartmentEis subdivided into an upper and lower section, G H. The upper section G is provided with shelves I, on which to place articles for safe keeping. rlhe lower section H is lined with metal, the bottom of which forms a watertight pan or vat, J, having an outlet, J', into the compartment F, in the bottom of which is also a water-pan, indicated by the dotted line a, having an outlet, b, the purpose of which will presently be shown. In the compartment F is a series of swing shelves, A' B', having hinged or jointed connections cl with the safe, two only being represented, which, however, may be more or less in number, as may be re quired. Said shelves arel hung to the side of the wall in sockets C', in which is fitted a short stud depending from the sides of the shelves. By this means the shelves can be swung out from the compartment, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby access may be easily had to them for placing articles thereon or for removing the same. The sides of compartment F are made of wire-cloth D', whereby a f'ree circulation of air is admitted, to the exclusion of iiies and other insects. E' is the door, which has a panel of wire-cloth. The door of the upper division of compartment E is double, or rather it consists of a door, F', and a shutter, G'. The door is provided with a panel of wirecloth, H', which, when necessary, is closed by the shutter G'. The door I' of the ice-cham ber, or division H ofthe compartment E, is double and lined, so as to exclude the heat as much as possible from the ice-chamber.

A safe constructed in the manner as above described is found to be not only convenient in practical use, but well calculated to preserve provisions and to keep them cool and sweet during warm weather. The ice-box or division H, on being filled with ice, keeps the entire safe in a low degree of temperature, the cold influence ofthe ice bein g conveyed to the upper division E through an opening in the ceiling of the ice-box, which, when not required, is closed by a damper, c. The water from the melting ice runs into the compart ment F through the spout J', and from which it iiows through the spout b to the outside. The stream of cold water thus flowing keeps the temperature of the compartment cool, so that the stores therein are continually fresh and sweet.

Claim.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The herein-described safe, consisting of the compartment F, having wire-cloth walls or sides D', and therein arranged swinging shelves A' B', water-pan a, and compartment E, subdivided into the upper division G, hayY` ing therein arranged shelves I and lower di vision or ice-box H lined with metal, and provided with a water-pan, J, communicating with the compartment E by means of the spout J', doors I' F', and shutter G', all arranged substantially in the manner as described, and for the purposes set forth.
