CLARENCE P. ROSENDALL, OF PETERSON, IOWA.
POST-HOLE BIGGER.
Application filed December 1, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE I. ROSEN- DALL, citizen of the United States, residing at Peterson, in the county of Clay and State of Iowa, have invented certain useful Improvements in Post-Hole Diggers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to post hole diggers, and aims to provide a tool of this character embodying a fixed blade or scoop, and a relatively movable one, the blades being designed so that when normally closed, a hole can be conveniently drilled therewith, means being provided to open the movable blade when it is desired to discharge the dirt from the device.
In carrying out the invention I further provide a yieldable means connecting the respective blades or scoops, to normally maintain the latter in closed position, and to automatically return said movable blade to its normal position subsequent to being opened.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view of the tool closed;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the tool open.
A tool constructed in accordance with my invention preferably consists of a handle 10 which may be constructed from any suitable material and desired dimensions, and having fixed to the lower extremities thereof a jaw 11, while pivoted for vertical swinging movement upon the handle 10 is a relatively movable jaw 12. The jaws are preferably of semicylindrical formation and disposed in confronting relation. Each jaw is formed at its lower end with an auger tooth 13, the teeth of the respective jaws normally contacting and holding said jaws slightly spaced.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
Serial No. 134,511.
Interposed between the respective jaws is a yieldable element preferably in the nature of a coil spring, which has its terminals connected to the respective jaws, and functions to normally maintain the jaws in closed position. In this position the tool can be conveniently handled for the purpose of drilling post holes in EtIl-GXPGdltlOllS manner.
Projecting laterally from the handle 10 is a lever 14 connected with the movable jaw 12 through the instrumentality of an operating rod 15. When it is desired to discharge the dirt or other material from the respective jaws, subsequent to each drilling operation, it is only necessary to elevate the lever 141: which operates the rod 15 to swing the movable jaw 12 away from the fixed jaw 11, to an open position, at which time the dirt will fall to the ground or surface as will be readily understood. In addition to providing a tool of this character which can be conveniently handled, the invention also embodies the desired features of simplicity and durability, and is exceedingly eflicient for the purpose intended.
What is claimed is:
1. In a post hole digger, a handle, a fixed jaw secured to the lower end thereof, a relatively movable jaw, a yieldable connection between the jaws to hold the latter normally in confronting relation, contacting boring means formed on the lower end of each jaw and adapted to hold the jaws in spaced relation, and means for swinging said movable jaw away from the fixed jaw' to an opened position.
2. In a post hole digger, a handle, a fixed jaw secured to the lower end thereof, a relatively movable jaw, a yieldable connection between the jaws to hold the latter normally in confronting relation, auger teeth formed integral upon the lower end of each of said jaws and adapted to hold the said jaws in slightly spaced relation, and means engaging said movable jaw for swinging said jaw away from the fixed jaw to an open position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CLARENCE P. ROSENDALL.
