of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to truss carlines such as are used for freight cars having pitch roofs; and the object of the invention is to produce a light, strong cai-line from light commercial rolled shapes, sueh'as angle bars and channels.
The invention consists in forming two similarly shaped truss members by kinking up the middle and one-half of two metal angles or channels, arranging them alongside of each other with their kinked-up middle portions crossing and their kinlredup ends oppositely disposed, and riveting them together at the middle and at both ends.
The invention further consists in the details of construction or' the carlines shown in the accompanying drawings.
Further objects and details of the invention appear in connection with the following description of the two carlines shown in the drawings; and `what the invention consists in is further defined in the appended claims. l
In the drawings, wherein the same reference characters designate the same parts in the several views,
Figure 1 is a top plan .View of a carline embodying the iiwention,l showing` it secured to the side plates of a car;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, the side plates being' shown in cross-section;
Fig. 3 is a plan View similar to Fig. 1 showing another carline embodying the invention; and y Fig. 4 is a side view of' the carline shown in Fig. 3.
The carline shown in Figs. 1 and 2 consists of two angle bars 11, similarly bent i up at the middle to form unsymmet-rical complementary sections, each of which has a straight hoizontal end 12 'and a straight inclinedv end 13. The horizontal ends are oppositely arranged to form the lower chord of the truss, and the inclined ends are Noppositely arranged overY the horizontal ends to forni the ridge and downwardlysloping ends of the top chord of the truss,

when two sections are secured together. The sections il are arranged with their vertical flanges in contact at the ends and ltheir horizontal tlanges up and projecting away from each other. The middle portions of the sections are riveted one on each side of a plate 14, the' upper edge is bentover to forni a horizontal flange 15 upon which the ridge, pole of the car may be supported and held Aby a vertical bolt. 'The 65 ends 16 of the horizontal flanges are'bent down inside or' the side plates 17; and gusset plates 18 areriveted to the tops of the horizontal flanges and bent over the side plates. rEhe ends ofthe 1gusset plates and 70 the downwardly7 bent ends of the carline flanges are bolted together through the'side plates and secure the carlins to the side plates.
In the carline shown in Figs. sections 19 are formed from angle bars bent -up at the middle and on one side, asin the Garline described above. The middle bends of the angle bars in the cai-line shown in *igs 3 and L1,; are sharper than in the car- 80 line shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and the middle sections of the angle bars contact-with each other and` are rivetedtogether to form a vertical middle strut 20; The ends oftheA carline are flanged down and provided with supporting plates 17, like those of the carline shown in Figs. 1 2.
The invention is not restricted to the shapes and 'forros of metal bars shown in the drawings..
lVhat l claiin as n'iy lowing;
1; carline comprising two similarly shaped .structural metal members, said invention is. the folll 3 and 4, the 75" members being,T disposed in vertical planes side by side with ,their middle portions crossing each other and -diverging and their end portions converging, said niembers being connected at the middley and ends toto-rm a truss.
2.v A carline comprising two similarly shaped structural rnetal members, said members being disposed in vertical planes side by side with their middle portions crossing each other and diverging* and -their 105 end 'portions converging, said members be- .ing connected at the middle and ends to form a truss, and a connecting plate secured between the crossing middle portions.
y 3. A Carlino of truss 'forni comprising 110v gg; v meagre? two complementary members having vertlcally disposed flanges and secured together 10 cally dslosed Hanges und secured together :xt the middle, the ends of said members 'being bent in opposite directions und adjacent ends converging toward the ends of the curline7 and gusset plates riveted 'to the ends of seid members to secure them together and support the earl-line upon the side plates of ay car.
Signed at Chrcago, lll., this 10th dey of October, 191.
