CLEANING AND srnarsnrnma'c norms."
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LALLY, a citizen of the United I in the county of Suffolk and State of Massa chusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (leaning and. Straightening Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for cleaning the outer surfaces of and straightening elongated objects of uniform cross section such as pipe, tubing or rod and my ob jects are the production of a simple, sturdy, long-lived machine which will automatically perform these functions without requiring skilled labor for its operation and which will automatically free itself from any accumulation of dirt, etc, thereby preventing clogging.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view of a pair of rolls with a pipe or tube therein; Fig. 2 a detail View, in section, of one roll; and Fig. 3 a side view of one half of a roll.
The machine comprises any suitable frame (not shown). Each cleaning and straight-- ening roll comprises a shaft 1, end plates 2, 2 mounted thereon with the cleaning and straightening disks 3, 3, separated by the spacing disks 4, a between them. The cleaning disks 3, 3 are of various diameters and are so arranged that a line tangent to their peripheries will be approximately a portion of the cross-section of the object to be cleaned, the form shown being a semi-circle for use in cleaning round pipe. The edges of the cleaning disks 3, 8 are preferably, although not necessarily, sharpened as shown in Fig. 2 and the spacing disks si. 4. are of less diameter than the adjacent cleaning disks so that scale, dirt and dust will fall out between the cleaning disks and the machine will not clog. The end plates, cleaningdisks and spacing disks are drilled at 5, 5 and the tie- bolts 6, 6
are run through to bind the disks and end plates solidly together. All the disks and end plates are preferably keyed to the shaft at 8.

Specification of Iietters Patent.
States, residing at Boston,
and the edges of the cleaning disks 3, 3 cut and grind away the outersurface scale and dirt and any inequalities are at the same time smoothed out and the pipe straightened.
If desired but one roll may be used for cleaning purposes only and the oipe twist e l. by hand or by any suitable device as feeds through thus removing scale and dirt.
One of the rolls may be rotated by power and the frictional engagement of the other roll with the pipe relied upon to rotate it as the pipe travels through.
If articles (such as square columns) other than-pipe or tubing are to be cleaned or straightened the cleaning disks are so arranged that a line tangent to the peripheries will be approximately a portion of the cross section of the article being operated upon.
By using thin cleaning disks and spacing disks an infinite number of cross-sections may be ground by proper assemblage.
I claim .1
1. A cleaning roll comprising a plurality of disks of various diameters spaced one from the other and secured together so that a line tangent to their peripheries will be approximately a portion of the cross-section of the object to be operated upon.
2. A cleaning roll comprising a plurality of cleaning disks of various diameters, spacing disks between them of lesser diameters than the adjacent cleaning disks, so that a line tangent to the peripheries of the cleaning disks will be approximately a portion of the cross-section of the object to be operated upon, end plates and means for tying the end plates, cleaning disks and spacing disks together.
3. In a cleaning roll the combination of a- Patented June 19. 1 .9117. Application filed February 20, 1917. Serial E0. 1.495%.
