BALING-PRESS.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIcK ST. CLAIR WIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lacon, in the county of Marshall and State ofv Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling- Presses, ,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in baling presses and particularly to the mechanism for automatically placing and tying the binding wires about the bale.
An object of my invention is the provision of a wire carrying or needle mechanism, a tying or twisting mechanism and means to take up slack from the Wire so that when the initial bale forming stroke of the plunger or follower forces the material to the end of the press box the slack wire is released.
A further object is'the provision in such a device of a drum which is intermittently operated to take up slack wire and then allowed to run idly to permit the slack wire to be-unwound therefrom.
A further obj ect'is the provision of means to reciprocate the wire carrier or needle, said means being actuated from the plunger or follower.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists 'in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be defined in the appended claims, ref. erence being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and which disclose merely for the purposes of illustration, one embodiment of my invention as applied to a certain type of press, it being understood that my invention may be applied to various types ofbaling presses and may be changed in practice within the scope of the claims without digressing from my inventive idea.

In the drawings the same characters of reference are used to designate like and corresponding parts.
The baling pressitself is not of my invention, the form shown being utilized for illustrative purposes only. It comprises the press box 1, the hopper 2, and the reciprocating follower or plunger 8, with any suitable mechanism or motor, not shown, for operating said follower or plunger. The shaft 4 is connected to the source of power and when the press is in operation this shaft is continuously driven. A shaft section 5 is disposed in alinement with the shaft A and has one'end approximate the end of the power shaft. This shaft section is adapted to be rotated for a brief space of time at the completion of the formation of each bale in the press box, and has the driving connection for actuating devices for cutting the baling wires and twisting or knotting the ends of said wires together. Clutch devices automatically operated are disposed so as to connect said shaft section 5 in operative relation with said shaft. These clutch devices are designated generally by the numeral 6 and operated by the lever 7 which is in the form of a bell crank lever pivoted as at 8 and slidably connected to one member of the clutch, as at 9. The lower arm 10 of this bell crank lever is slidably mounted as at 11 on an operating link to be described later, so that when said link is raised and lowered the lever will be thrown to engage and disengage the clutch parts. This link is connected so as to be raised and'lowered at intervals during the operation of the machine, as will be described at length hereinafter.
The wire with which the completed bale is bound is fed from suitable supply reels 15 located to one side of the press box 1 and in line with the guide members 16, which guide members are supported on the side of the press box and have guide ways 17 formed therein. Mounted to reciprocate in these guiding members are the needle or wire carrying arms 18, the guiding members being'so disposed as to guide said needles in their movement across the press box at a point coincident or approximate with the inner limit of the stroke of the follower or plunger. Each of said needles or arms 18 is provided at its inner end with a suitable wire carrying revoluble sheave or wheel 19 pe.

From the upper and lower sides of the arms 18 at a point a suitable distance from the outer ends thereof are positioned vertically projecting studs '01- pins 20 which operate in elongated slots 21, formed in the outer end of the rock arms 22. The other ends of said rock arms are secured to the vertically disposed shaft 23 mounted in suitable bearings in the side of the press box and having on they upper end thereof the crank arm 24. This crank arm isoperatively connected by means of link 25 with a second crank arm 26 secured to the upper extremity of the vertical shaft 27 which is mounted in suitable bearings on the opposite side of said press box.- This vertical shaft 27 is connected by means of the lower crank arm 28 with the actuating'member or link 29. This 'a'ctuating member or link 29 is designed to be operated at stated intervals so as to throw the needle 18 with its wire across the end of the completed bale. The operating connection for this link 29 will be described later.
I will now describe a suitable form of wire cutting and twisting mechanism, which is to be understood as being merely an illustrative form. Suitably mounted on the side of the press box opposite the needle guideways is the vertical shaft 30 which is driven by means of the bevel gear 31 from the bevel gear 32 on the shaft section 5 when said shaft section is in operative relation with the power shaft 4. This shaft 30 is suitably mounted in the bracket member 33 and has disposed at spaced intervals the bevel gears 34 which bevel gears mesh with and drive the bevel gears 35 on the stub shafts 36, which are mounted in suitable bearings 37 as shown. On each of the stub shafts 36 is keyed a master wheel 38 which is provided withthe internal geared section 39 and an additional internal gear section 40 which is located in advance of said first mentioned gear section 39 and to one side thereof, also being of less extent. A tubular shaft4l, one for each stub shaft 36, is journaled in the bearings 41 and disposed in the same horizontal plane as the stub shaft 36, being provided at its inner end with the wire disk 42 and at its outer end with the gear wheel 43, the latter being adapted to be engaged and partially rotated by the gear section 40. Each of the wiredisks 42 is provided with the openings 44, which are-circular in form and open out of the edge of the disk; 'Asshown, each diskis'provided with fourof such openings spaced'regula-rly 'mately'ninety degrees or one fourth of a revolution for each rotation of the master wheel. These openings 44 are thus disposed opposite the openings in the side of the press box and are adapted to receive strand ai of the binding wire as indicated, in dotted lines. Revolubly mounted in each tubular shaft 41 is the shaft 45 which has secured on its outer end the pinion- 46 which is adapted to be engaged and rotated by the gear section 39 on the inside of the master wheel. A wire twister 47 issecured to-the inner end of each shaft, this wire twister in the form shown comprising a pair of jaws 48 and 49 having the wire receiving opening 50'formed therebetween. A suitable shearing member or arm 51 is supported on'the frame having the shearing shoulder 52, which co-acts with the jaw 49 in its rotation to cut the wire, it being understood that the shaft 45' is rotated so as to cause the jaws 48 and 49 to engage and twist the wire so as to secure the baling wire on the bale.
This invention further consists in providing a new mechanism whereby slack may be taken up from the binding wire to permit the bale to be pushedto the end of the press box, the slackwhich has been taken up being released so as to cause the wire to entirely surround the bale. When the baling operation is completed the plunger actuates the needle so as to throw the other portion of the strand across the bale into position to be grasped and twisted by the twisting members, forming a secure tie for the wire.
I will now proceed to describe the particular features of my invention which'consists in providing adrum adapted to grasp the loose end of the baling wire and having actuating connections to rotate said drum so as to cause it to take up such slack so as to permit the'ba'le being formed and forced to the end of the press box and still havesufiicient wire to bind it, the drum being disconnected and adapted to run idly soas to 54 and journaled in the brace members or. brackets 55. Mounted on each shaft 54 is the gear 56 meshing with the gear 57 on the stub shaft'58, the latter gear being posi-' tioned in alinement with each gear segment or section 59 formed on the outside of the master wheel 38. It will thus be seen that at certain intervals the drum or reel 53 will be positively driven to w1nd up the slack wire and at other intervals will be free to rotate topermit the unwinding of this Wire. Each drum has provided on one edge an extended flange 60 which is provided with a cut out portion or opening 61. This cut out portion or opening is circular in shape with its opening into the edge of the flange restricted and forms a means for grasping the free end of the strand 6 of the baling wire, which upon rotation of the drum 53 is wound thereon, being guided during this action by means in the form of a roller 62.
The external gear section 59 is so arranged as to begin the rotation of the drum 53 as soon as the wire is grasped by the twisting member 47 and forced against the shearing shoulder, said drum rotating continuously until after the completion of the twisting operation. The gear section 59 is then disengaged from the gear 57 and therefore the drum 53 is understood that the plunger has forced the material which it is compressing against the transverse strands of wire and moved them to the end of the press box. This causes the drums 53 to unwind and furnish the wires for one side of each bale. The strands of the slack which have been wound upon the drums 53 are finally disposed in one of the openings 4A of .the wire disk 42, and upon the completion of the bale and the projection of the needle across the press box, it will be twisted with the strand a of the wire on the needle and secured about the bale.
As is well understood the needle is actuated at intervals to feed the wire across the baling chamber and the twisting mechanism is actuated at intervals so asto tie the binder when the bale is completed. Both the needle and the twisting mechanism are thrown into operation by means of connections from one of the slack drums at the latter part of the unwinding of the wire. As a concrete form of this idea, I show connections from the lower of said drums 53 to lift the link 29 and allow it todrop, said link acting to engage the clutch parts. In addition said link is actuated by connections from the plunger to throw the needle across the baling chamber.
The lower shaft 54L is extended to receive the mutilated gear wheel 63, which is adapted to drive gear wheel 64 on vertical shaft 65 at intervals. with the irregular cam-shaped disk 66, having part thereof raised so as to lift link 29, as said link extends over said cam-shaped disk. This operates to engage the clutch devices, so that the twisting mechanism 'is operated; Inaddifree to rotate, it being This shaft 65 is provided the bell crank lever 7 tion, the link is brought into operation relative with an arm or extension 67 from the plunger or follower. This arm or extension 67 has a bifurcated extremity 68 which fits between stops 69 on said link 29. The shaft 65 is rotated during the last part of the unwinding of drum 53, and the cam 66 is so timed as to lift the link when the bale is complete and at the end of the baling chamber. This is the proper time for the needle to be actuated and for the twisting mechanism to operate to tie the binding wire. It is to be noted that it is on the withdrawal stroke of the follower or plunger that the needle is thrown across the press box to place the wire in proper position, and that it is on the forward stroke that the needle is withdrawn from the press box.
While I have described this particular means of obtaining the result desired, it is to be understood that these detailed constructions are merely illustrative embodiments of my invention and that the structure and arrangement of parts may be varied as desired within the scope of the claims which define my comprehensive invention.
What I claim is 1. In a baling press having a press box, and means to form a bale therein, the combination of a wire carrying means adapted to operate transversely of the press box and to feed wire across said press box, twisting mechanism and means adapted to be rotated to take up slack wire, said means being idle at times to permit the release of said slack wire.
2. In a baling press having a press box, and means to form a bale therein, the combination of a wire carrying means adapted to operate transversely of the press box and to feed wire across said press box, twisting mechanism and means to take up slack wire,
said means including a drum and means to rotate said drum at intervals, said operatlng means being disconnected from said drum at intervals to permit said drum to run idly and unwind the slack wire.
3. In a baling press having a press box, and means to form a bale therein, the combination of a wire carrying means adapted to operate transversely of the press box and to feed wire across said press box, twisting mechanism and means to take up slack wire, said means including a drum and means to rotate said drum at intervals, said operating means including gears connected to drive said drum and a segmental gear positioned so as to operate said gears and drum at intervals, said drum being thereby permitted to run idle at intervals to unwind the slack wire.
4. Ina baling press having a press box and a plunger or follower adapted to reciprocate therein, the combination of wire a tie, means to sever'said last mentioned slack Wire,

5. In a baling press having a press box, and means to form a bale therein, the combination of a wire carrying means adapted to operate transversely of the press box and to feedwire across said press box, twisting mechanism and means to take up said means being idle at times to permit the release of said slack wire, and including a drum having a flange provided thereon, means formed on said flange to engage the Wire and means for guiding the wire while being wrapped about said drum.

In a baling press having a press box, and means to form a bale therein, the com bination of a wire carrying means adapted to operate transversely of the press box and to feed wire across said press box, twisting mechanism'and means to take up slack wire, said means being idle at times to permit the release of said slack wire, and including a drum and means to operate said twisting mechanism and said drum, said means including a master wheel having a segmental gear provided thereon for operating said twisting mechanism, and an additional segmental gear formed thereon for causing the rotation of said drum.

10. In a baling press having'a press box and a plunger or follower adapted to reciprocate therein, the combination of wire carrying means adapted to operate transversely of the press box and to feed wire vacross said press box, twisting and cutting mechanism and means to wind up slack wire from a free strand, said parts being normally in inoperative condition, said slack winding means being adapted to unwind and having connections which during the last part of the unwinding operate to throw the wire carrying means into operative relation with actuating means and to throw said twistingand cutting mechanism into operative relation with power driven means, said twisting and cutting mechanism being adapted to be actuated prior to'the actuation of said slack wlndingmeans by said power driven means.
11. In a baling press having a press box and means to form a bale therein, the combination of wire carrying means adapted to operate transversely of the press box and to feed wire across said press box,twisting mechanism and means adapted to be rotated to take up slack wire, said rotary means being idle during the formation of thebale to permit the release of said slack 12. 14. In a baling press having a press box, and a plunger or follower adapted to be reciprocated therein, the combination of wire carrying means adapted to be operated transversely of said press box to feed wire there-across, twlsting mechanism and rotary means to take up slack wire, actuating mechanism for said twisting mechanism and said rotary means normally out of operative relation with the source of power, said rotary means being idle at times to permit the slack wire to unwind therefrom, connections between said wire carrying means and said plunger or follower operated by the unwinding of said rotary means to place said connections in position to be operated by said plunger or follower, means actuated by said connections to place said actuating mechanism in operative relation with the source of power.
