VALVE.
To all whom z't may concern: Be it known that- I, FOSTER J. HERRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sherodsville, in thecounty of Carroll and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements -in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relationlto valves for internal combustion engines, and the nature and' objects'thereof will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art-to which itI apper-v tains in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawings,l illustrating what I now believe`to be the preferred embodiment` or mechanical expression of my invention vfrom among other forms and arrangements, within the spirit thereof claims.
However, an object of the inventionis to provide a valve for internal combustion engilles, said valve being of the rotary type and embodying anew and novel packing means whereby escape of pressure past the. port of the valve is positively precluded.
Another object of the invention is to provide a valve of the character set forth associated with and inclosed within a block or casing, whereby the same may be secured to and form a part of the conventional type of motor vehicle engine afterthe usual tappet valves have been removed therefrom.
.In addition to the foregoing, my invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter .described and particularly set forth in the appended claims.

My improved valve is in the form of an elongated cylinder 14, adapted to lit snugly within the opening .12, and to extend beyond end of the casing as at 15. The opposite end of the valve is provided with a threaded opening in which a bolt 16 is seated, the head thereof engaging a plate 17 resting against the exterior of the casing thereby providing a means to prevent removal of the-.valve from the casing but at the same time permitting rotary movement thereof. The valve 14 is lprovided with valve openings 18, each arranged in the path of the opening 13 of the casing, and at relative angular relation.of'approximately-45o.
The end 15 of the valve is provided with a sprocket 19, over which a chain 20 passes, said chain also passing over an idler sprocket 21 mounted upon a stud which projects from the engine casing. The sprocket 21 also four revolutions of the tcrank shaft to one of the valve.

Diametrically opposite each of said portions 27, the rings are severed as at 28; the rings 'of a single packing device are furthermore connected in spaced relaing 18 v tion by means of connecting bars 29 formed integrally with the rings and adjacent the ofset portions27. In assembling a pair of the devices, the rings of each pair are disposed side by side, with the offset portion 27 of one ring disposed between the severed portion a pair of connecting bars 29 will be in opposed relation. 'Ihe packing device is associated with the valve by disposing the,
connected-rings 26 in the annular grooves 25, and the connecting bars 29 in the longitudinal grooves 24 of the valve. It will be obvious that a resilient packing surface is provided entirely around each valve openparent that'the severed portion 28 ofthe rings are adjacent the ends ofthe valve openings 18. Owing'to this arrangement, when the said openings are in alinement with the openings 13, no pressure to speak of exists, and consequently the-presence of the severed portion does not reduce-the eiiiciency of the packing device. The operation of this type of valve is well known and hence further descriptionpf its operation is unessential.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an internal combustion engine, ai ro-v tary valve in the ing transversely packing device associated with the valve pairs of rings adjacent the ends of the passages, ring being cumference, of each ring being severed, and the pairs of rings being disposed with the olfset portion of one disposed in the severed portion of the other, and bars connecting thel rings of'opposed pairs, said bars being disposed adjacent the longitudinal edges of thev passages to form a packing therefor.
2. A rotary valve` havlng a offset at onev portion of its cirexternal annular groove end of said opening, and a groove formed the edges of the opening, and connecting the annular groove and a packing device` including a pair of rings in each annular groove, and bars located in the longitudinal grooves and connecting one of the rings of one pair with one of the rings of the opposite pair.
