GRAIN-CAR DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1911?.
Application filed April 26, 1915. Serial No. 24,017.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Jon MALY. a citizen of the United States, residing at Dwight, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grain-Car Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a door for grain cars.
The object of the invention is the provision of a door of this character having a.clamp, whereby the door can be quickly and easily fastened in the doorway to prevent lateral or vertical movement thereof, the fastening of the door being effected without the use of nails or other like fasteners which result in damage to the door frame and particularly to the posts or stiles thereof, and when the door is to be released the same can be effected from the outside of the car so as to allow the unloading thereof on the removal of the door.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation looking toward the outside of a grain car provided with a door constructed in accordance with the invention. 0
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view looking toward the inside of the door.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal sectional view.
Fig. 4: is an enlarged sectional view ,on the line 4.1 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates a portion of a grain car of the ordinary well-known construction, B the doorway in the side thereof as usual, and C the grain door.
. The door clamp comprises a pair of vertical shafts 5, each being disposed next to the vertical stiles of the doorway B, and have their upper ends journaled in bearing eyes 6 fixed to the stiles of said doorway near the head thereof, while the lower ends of the shafts extend through the flooring of the car A and are journaled in U-shaped bearing brackets 7 fixed to the under side of the said car, the brackets being formed with side cheeks 8 having journaled therein the axles 9 to which are fixed worm screws 10 meshing with worm gears 11 fixed upon the lower ends of the shafts 5 Within the brackets 7, so that on turning the axles 9 the said shafts will be rotated for a purpose presently described.
Formed integral with the shafts 5 at intervals of the length thereof are curved ears or wings 12 to which are riveted or otherwise fixed curved or arcuate shaped clamping rails or bars 13 which are adapted to be swung into contact with the inner face of the door C, which engages abutment cleats 14: which are bolted or otherwise fixed to the vertical stiles of the doorway B, the said cleats being formed with cut-away portions 15 providing a clearance for the ears or wings 12 carrying the clamping rails or bars 13 so that the same will freely move into clamping and unclamping positions for the fastening and unfastening of the door, as will be apparent.
The axles 9 supporting the worm screws 10 each has an outer squared end 16 for detachable engagement therewith of a hand crank, key or other operating tool (not shown), so that the shafts 5 can be turned for the swinging of the rails or bars ,13 into position for the clamping of the door G or the freeing thereof. It will be obvious that the rails or bars 13 can be adjusted so as to release the door C whereby it may be raised, and in this instance the rails or bars 13 serve as guides therefor so that the grain in the car A can be readily unloaded there from.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is In combination with a door casing and a door, a pair of cleats arranged upon the vertical edges of the casing, said. cleats each comprising a single length of material, the vertical edges of said cleats being secured to. the confronting and inner sides of the vertical portions of the casing, the intermediate portion of each of thecleats being bent longitudinally to provide the laterally extending abutting portions, the cleats being then bent longitudinally at right angles and cooperating with the casing to form a chamber, said chamber being provided with openings at spaced intervals, shafts rotatably mounted within each of the chambers and having wings formed thereon, said wings extending through said openings, and clamping bars mounted upon each of the wings and engageabie with said door to force the tions of said cleats.
In testimony whereof I'aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
