DEVICE FOR KEYING PULLEYS T0 SHAFTS.

Be it known that I, EDWARD E. FOBSHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkersburg, in the county of food and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Keying Pulleys to Shafts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a novel type of sectional pulley that can be conveniently and expeditiously mounted on a shaft and which is of such simple construction that it can be manufactured cheaply and will be durable and eflicient in operation.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from an examination of that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which:

Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section taken through the pulley, and showing the manner of inserting one of the locking keys to operative position,
Fig. 7 is a detail longitudinal sectional view, taken through one of the sections of the pulley.
Referring to the drawings more in detail, the letter A designates the pulley as an en tirety and B a shaft. The pulley consists of companion sections 1 and 2, each having a central semi-cylindrical bore 3 therein, the said bores being adapted to register when the sections are coupled so as to provide a cylindrical bore for the reception of the shaft B. Each section has also formed therein a pair of substantially T-shaiped slots 4 and 5 located, respectively, on opposite sides of the semi-cylindrical bore and at points spaced therefrom, and the said slots have their opposite ends opening into the opposite ends of the sections and the ends of the stems of the T-shaped slots open into the inner face of the sections. When the sections are in coupled position the stems of the T-shaped slot in one section registers with the stems of the ,T-shaped slots in the companion section and form slots that are I-shaped in cross section, and the walls of the heads of the T-shaped slot in each section designated 6, which connect with the walls of the stems of the T-shaped slots are tapered from one end of the section to the other, as shown more particularly in Fig. 7. The side walls of the stems of the T- shaped slots also taper from one end of the section to the other, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The sections 1 and 2 of the pulley are adapted to be locked together by means of keys that are of substantially I-shape in cross section, each having the opposite heads 8 and 9 and connecting web 10. The keys taper throughout their length and have the inner side of the heads thereof also tapering, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing.
When inserting the keys in the slots in the pulleys the sections 1 and 2 are sepa rated sufficiently to admit of the large end of the keys being inserted in the small ends of the slots, the keys then being moved inwardly, resulting in the keys moving the sections toward each other and causing the same to clamp the shaft therebetween. The sections 1 and 2 have those ends into which the narrow ends of the slots open, provided with lugs 11 in which are mounted screws 12, which are adapted to be adjusted against the smaller ends of the keys, when the latter are in operative position, and prevent backward movement of the keys. The inner side of one section of the pulley carries pins 13, which are adapted to fit in openings in the inner face of the other section of the pulley when the sections are assembled, as shown in Fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, is:
