To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY VARTA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Annville, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Embroidery- Frame Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clamps for securing embroidery frames to embroidery machines.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device of the kind mentioned by means of which embroidery frames may be quickly and securely adjusted in position upon embroidery machines and when so adjusted will be positively held thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this class which is of cheap and simple construction and one which will result in the saving of time and labor.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the following novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device secured to the frame of an embroidery machine, an embroidery frame being shown clamped in position;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, the embroidery frame and the frame of the machine both being shown in section;
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the drawings in detail the invention comprises a rotatable shaft 10, which is mounted in bearings 11 formed upon the stationary clamping members or plates 12 which are adapted to be secured to the frame of the embroidery machine, a p0rtion of this frame being shown at 13. The stationary clamping members 12 are preferably four in number and are each provided with a bearing 11,' so that these plates in addition to forming one of the clamping members provide means for mounting the shaft 10. Movable clamping members or dogs 14 are mounted loosely upon the shaft 10, one of said dogs being used with each of the stationary clamping members to form the complete clamp. The dogs 14 are notched as at l5, the said notch being engaged by a pin 16 carried vby the shaft 10, for the purpose of limiting the movement of the dog with respect to the shaft. Adjustably secured to t-he shaft l0 by means of a set screw 17 is a collar 18, the said collar being provided with an opening 19 for the reception of one end of a horizontal spring 20, the opposite end of the said spring being in engagement with the dog 14 for the pur pose of urging the two clamping members in contact. As will be seen from Fig. 2 the two clamping members 12 and 14 are adapted to have clamped therebetween the embroidery frame 21, the said frame being provided with a tongue 22 for this purpose.
Secured to a part of the frame 13 of the machine is an arm 23, through which the shaft 10 is adapted to pass. Mounted upon the shaft 10 in juxtaposition to this arm is a lever 24, the collar of which is provided with a set screw 26 by means of which it is positioned upon the shaft. The lever 24 is formed with ears 25, within which is pivoted a latch 26, a spring 27 being interposed between the latch handle and the lever 24. The opposite end of the latch is formed with a projecting end 28 which is adapted to enter either one of the two notches 29 and 80, formed in the arm 23. When the latch is engaged with the notch 29 the clamps are in an operative position, and by disengaging this latch from this notch and rotating the shaft so as to engage it with the notch 30 the clamp will be held in an inoperative position and out of the way of the machine.
It is believed that from the above descr1ption and the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be apparent and therefore a further explanation is thought to be unnecessary.
Having described the invention, what I claim is;
1. An embroidery machine frame clamp comprising a rotatable shaft, clamping plates adapted to be secured to the frame of the machine, bearings carried by said plates, clamping dogs carried by said shaft and coperating with said plates, springs engageable with said dogs, means for adjusting the tension of said springs and means secur ing said clamps in an operative or inoperative position.
2. An embroidery machine frame clamp comprising stationary clamping members, a rotatable shaft having bearings in said stationary clamping members, movable clamping members carried by said shaft and adjustably tensioned thereon and means for securing said clamps in an ope ative or inoperative position.
3. An embroidery machine frame comprising combined stationary clamping and bearing members, a shaft rotatably mounted in said members, clamping dogs mounted upon said shaft and springs carried by said shaft and engaging` said dogs to urge them in the direction toward the stationary clamping members.
4c. An embroidery machine frame com prising combined stationary clampingl and bearing` members, a shaft rotatably mounted in said members, clamping dogs mounted upon said shaft in a manner to permit of a limited radial movement thereon and springs carried by said shaft and engaging said dogs to urge them in a direction toward the stationary clamping members.
5. An embroidery machine frame comprising` combined stationary clamping and bean ing members, a shaft rotatably mounted in said members, clamping dogs mounted upon said shaft, springs mounted upon said shaft and engaging said dogs and adjustable collars also mounted upon said shaft and engaging` said springs, whereby the tension of the springs may be adjusted.
6. An embroidery machine frame comprising stationary clamping members, a shaft, movable clamping members carried by said shaft, a bearing arm, a lever secured to said shaft adjacent said arm and a spring operated latch pivoted to said arm and adapted to engage notches in said arm to secure the clamps in the operative or inoperative position,
