AUGUST LORENZ HELLERMANN, OF DUSSELDORF, GERMANY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June t2, Multi.
Application filed April 2, 1917. Serial No. 159,307.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, AUGUST LORENZ HEL- LEHMANN, a citizen of the German Empire, and resident of Dusseldorf, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Apparatus for Making Corrugated and Creased Wooden Shavings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an apparatus for making corrugated and creased wooden shavings.
separating shavings from wood, e. g. a plane, a resistance which projects into the path of the shavings as 'they pass the throat so as to obstruct their progress.
Such corrugated or creased shavings are suitable as a stufling for cushions, etc., a filling for filters, as a packing material, and also as a material for litter or the like.
To use ordinary, 'L'. e. such shavings that undergo no further treatment, as a stuiing or a packing material, is very old. These shavings, however, have the drawback that they become unresilient when a considerable pressure is continually exerted on them. In order to keep the shavings resilient, which is necessary if theyv are to be successfully used for any of the purposes specified, I arrange a resilient resistance in the path of the shavings separated from the wood which, in obstructing their progress, creases or corrugates them. Shortly after they have been separated, the shavings are comparatively soft and yielding so that they do not break and remain in their corrugated or creased condition after leaving the plane.
The apparatus for creasing or corrugating the shavings can be adapted to hand tools as well as to planing machines. Owing to its simple construction and smallness, it can also be easily adapted to existing hand planes or existing planing or `wood wool making machines. In a planing machine it may, for instance, be arranged in the drawer for the dressing knives, Vin a wood wool making machine vin the cutter slide.
Reference is to be' had to the accompanying drawings in which I have illustrated my invention by way of example, and in which-` Figure l is a lateral view 0f a plane provided with my apparatus, partly broken away; Fig. 2 is a plan view of said plane; Figs. 3 and t are cross-sections of the plane on lines 3-3 and el-A of Fig. 1, respec- TWith this object in view, I ar` range in the throat of a tool, suitable forA tively; Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of the parts effecting the corrugation or creasing of the shavings; Fig. 6 is a section on line 6 6 of Fig. 5; Figs. 7 to 9 illustrate some stages of the corrugating or creasing process.
rIhe plane, comprising a stock a, a cutter b and a cover iron c, is of the usual construction. In the passage or throat of the stock a is aparallel guide i which is fixed to a plate e. This plate is held on the stock by means of screws. A slide is movable in said parallel guide and supported by screws g which pass through slots L of guide d, see Figs. 4 and 5. Fixed to the upper end of slide j' is a bracket i which passes through a further slot f: of guide (Z, see Fig. ll, and carries a screw Z to which is attached one end of a spring m. The other end of said spring fm is held by a bracket fn fixed to plate e. At its lower end, slide f has two bearings o, in which a pin p is carried. A flap r is fixed on this pin by means of lateral lugs g. An adjustable spring s tends to keep this flap in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5.
I prefer to divide the shavings into a plurality of narrow strips, for which object I arrange a cutting device preceding the cutter of the plane and making a series of parallel cuts in the surface to be smoothed. In the construction illustrated, this cutting device is a roller t having a plurality of circular edges. The pin on which said roller revolves is held in two plates u inserted in the sides of the stock a and held by screws o. The holes in plates 'a through which said screws pass are elongated so that the plates 'a may be displaced and the roller t raised or lowered accordingly. A set screw w is provided for each plate u.
VA shaving e, after being divided into strips by the cutting vdevice (roller t) is raised by the cutter Zo as usually and travels to such an extent that it is able to pass under the flap, see Fig. 9. The resistance of slide f and Hap fr may be regulated as desired by vadjusting springs m and s, respectively, according to the desired thickness of the shavings or the extent to which they are to be corrugated or creased. It will be observed that the slide j' and the flap r are movable lengthwise of the throat or passage through which the shaving .e is expelled; the pivot y) is located at one side of said passage in such a'position `that a :radiusdrawn from the center of the pivot to the'point'at whichthe Hap r is lirst engaged by the end of the shaving e, will be approximately perpendicular tothe llongitudinal axis of said passage, see Fig. 7. The movement of the slide f, while lengthwise of the throat through which the shaving a passes, is preferably not exactly in -line with the axis of said throat, butoblique thereto, `thus forming a lbetter clearance between `the cover iron c and the flap r whenthe slide moves outward tothe position shown in -Fig. 9.
Obviously, it-makes no difference lwhether the plane is moved over the wood, as is 'the rule fin hand planes, or the wood Iis lmoved over the iplane, as .in planing machines.
The shavings so obtained may be 4disinfected, for impregnated with fire-proof materials, it desired.
