IMPROVEMENT IN HORSESHOES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,972, dated January 23, 1872.

Specification describing certain Improvements in Horseshoes, invented by SILAS SLOAT, of Morgan, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio.

Figure 1 is a detail vertical section of my improved horseshoe taken through the line as .20, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.

My invention has for its object to improve the construction of my improved horseshoe patented October 22, 1867, and numbered 7 0,035, so as to make it more convenient and effective in use; and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the shoe, as hereinafter more fully described.

A represents the lower part of the shoe, which is made with a toe-calk, a and heelcalks ed, in the ordinary manner; and upon the inner edge of the forward part of which is formed an upwardly-projecting flange, a, to overlap the edge of the iron band B, which rests upon the upper side of the shoe A, and to which said shoe is secured by screws, as shown in Fig. 1. Upon theinner edges of the rear end of the band B are formed downwardly-projecting flanges or lips b which overlap the inner edges of the rear ends of the lower part of shoe A, to prevent the said parts A B from slipping upon each other under a side strain. Upon the outer edge of the front and forward side parts of the band B is formed an upwardly-projecting flange, b to which the leather band 0 is securely riveted. The band C is made of leather or other suitable material, is so formed as to fit upon the hoof, and is open at the rear, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

' To the front of the iron band B is securely riveted the lower end of the metallic toe-piece D, which passes up along and fits upon the front of the hoof. The upper end of the toepiece D is bent outward to form a hook, at, to receive the strap or straps by which the shoe is secured to the hoof. The toe-piece D holds the shoe firmly to the forward part of the hoof and thus prevents clatteringn E is a strap, which passes around the hoof horizontally upon the outer side of the toe-piece D and leather band C, and is buckled in the rear of the foot. The forward part of the strap E is kept from slipping up by the hook d of the toe-piece D,

and its rear parts by keepers 6 attached to the rear parts of the leather bands 0. F are levers, the lower ends of which are pivoted to the rear ends of the flanges b of the band B, and to their upper ends are attached the ends of the strap G, which passes around the front part of the foot upon the outer side of the leather band C and the toe-piece D. The strap G is made in two parts buckled together, and is kept from slipping up by the hook d/ of the toe-piece D. To the upper parts of the levers F are pivoted the upper ends of the short bars H, the lower ends of which are bent inward and have prongs or teeth formed upon them, which pass through openings in the lower parts of the sides of the leather band C and take hold of the sides of the hoof.

By this construction the rear parts of the shoe are held against the rear part of the hoof by a lever pressure, so as to hold the shoe firmly to its place. This construction also enables the shoe to be conveniently tightened as may be required. This construction also enables the shoe to be conveniently attached to and removed from the hoof, and does not require the front part of the leather band 0 to be slit or made open.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat entv1. The flange or lip a formed upon the inner edge of the forward part of the shoe A, in combination with the band B, to which the leather band C is attached, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The lips or flanges 11 formed upon the inner edges of the rear parts of the band B, in combination with the rear parts of the shoe A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. The pivoted levers F, pivoted toothed or pronged bars H, and strap G, in combination with the metallic band B, leather band C, and toe-piece D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
