Specification of Letters Eatent.
\ Application filed April 11', 1916. Serial No. 90,473.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS N. BUNDLE,
citizen of the United States, residing a} Paton, in the county of Greene and State 0 Iowa, have invented a new and useful Lantern-Slide, of which'the following is a-specification. I
The object of my invention is to provide a lantern slide of simple and inexpensive construction, designed for use with moving-picture machines, magic lanterns and the like.
A further object is to provide such a lantern adapted to receive and hold detachable, mounted, indicating characters and provided with a sheet of transparent non-heat conducting material and with a frame for holding said slide and sheet adjacent to each other in position for holding the indicating characters in position.
My invention consists in certain details, in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a front elevation of a lantern slide embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 showsa detail sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of one of the letters or indicating characters.
In the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate, generally, a transparent plate, preferably made of glass, having a plurality of regularly spaced transparent grooves 11. The plate is of proper size for a slide for magic lanterns for moving picture machines and the like.
For use with the plate 10 I provide indicating characters, such as the letters 12 preferably made of metal and having the laterally projecting flanges 18 designed to extend into the oovesll, as shown in Fig. 2.
There 1s provided in connection with the plate 10 a three sided frame 14 comprising one side and two end members having the form of inwardly opening channels. As shown the width of the channelsis greater than the thickness of the plate 10. The proper letters, figures and the like for conveying the information desired, for asare selected and properly arranged on the plate 10 with their flanges received in the grooves 11;.
In arranging the letters, the plate is left in horizontal position.
Over the letters I place a comparatively thin sheet 15 of non-heat conducting trans-.
parent material, such for instance, as mica.
The plate 10 and sheet 15 with the letters received between them, are then slipped into the frame 14. The free ends of the frame 14: are connected by strips 16 whereby they are properly spaced and braced. The strips 16 Patented June t2, 121i?! are so arranged as not to interfere with the free insertion and removal of the plate 10 and sheet 15.
It will be noted that the flanges of each letter are arranged the same distance from each other as the distance of the successive grooves 11 from each other.'
The that the completed slides may be placed in the lantern or the like with the open end of the frame upward.
It will be seen thatthe information conveyed may be easily changed by properly selecting the letters 12, thus the same slide may be used for a variety of purposes and the expense of such a slide is less than that of making printed or painted slides.
The mica sheet serves two purposes; in combination with the plate and frame, it holds the letters in their proper positions and it also serves as non-conductor for heat,
whereby the glass is protected and will not be so likely to be broken by quick expansion or contraction.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the various .parts of my improved slide without'departing from the essential features and purposes thereof, and it is my intention to cover by my present application any such modificaparts are so arranged and assembled tions of structure as may be included within a the reasonable scope of my claim. 7
