POWDER-DISPENSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1917.
Application filed January 19, 1916. Serial No. 72,987.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, NIoHoLAs ANDRES and EDWARD ANDRES, citizens of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powder-Dispensing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in powder dispensing devices, and its primary object resides in providing a device in which by movement of one of two cooperative parts with relation to the other, the powdered contents of a container are dispensed in predetermined quantities.
Another object of our invention is to provide means which by stirring the contents of the container during the dispensing operation, prevent packing of the pulverulent material in a damp atmosphere, and still another object of the invention is to provide in a device of the character mentioned, means which permit of the ready replacement of one powder container by another of similar size and form.
With the above objects in view, our invention consists in the arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated, and in which,
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of our dispensing device in the form which adapts it for attachment to a wall or other upright surface,
Fig. 2, a section taken along the line 22, Fig. 1,
Fig. 3, an elevation of the device in a form which permits of its support upon a table or other horizontal surface,
Fig. 4, a sectional elevation of a modified construction of the dispensing device,
Fig. 5, a perspective view of one of the containers forming part of the invention, and
Fig. 6, a fragmentary elevation of the bar of the device showing a modification in the construction of the same.
vReferring more specifically to the drawings, the reference numeral 2 designates a cylindrical container closed at one of its ends by means of a cover 3, 4 a funnel-shaped spout which is designed to be fitted upon the opposite end of the container, and 5 a bar end of the bar.
which cooperates with the container for the delivery of its pulverulent contents in predetermined quantities.
The container has in itsends, openings 6 formed to admit the bar so that it may slide lengthwise and snugly fit within the same.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the bar 5 is formed integrally at the end of a bracket 7 which is provided with suitable means such as a plate 8 for its attachment to an upright surface 9.
The bar extends in a substantially vertical direction through the openings 6 of the container which normally is supported upon a pin 10 extending transversely at the lower If so desired the container may be reinforced at the point at which it rests upon the pin, by a plate 12.
The bar has at a point above the container, a transverse pin 13 which limits the upward movement of the latter and which extends through one of a series of apertures 14.
The bar has adjacent its lower end above the stop 10, one or more apertures 15 of suitable siZe and form which provide the means for carrying small quantities of the powdered contents of the container into the funnel t at the lower end thereof, and the bar mayif so desired be furthermore provided at a point within the container, with a transverse pin 16 adapted to stir the contents of the container.
In the operation of the device, the container whose openings 6 are normally occupied by unapertured parts of the bar and thereby closed, is lifted along the bar until its upper end-surface engages the stop 13' after which it is released and permitted to fall upon the lower stop 10.
The openings 15 in the bar which when the latter moves through the powder in the container, are filled therewith, carry their contents into the spout 4: which delivers the powder through its open lower end onto a subjacent surface.
Our invention is particularly adapted to dispense powdered soap in lavatories, kitchens, etc., and as such is operated by lifting the container by one hand while the other hand after having been moistened, is held below the same to receive the powder discharged through the open end of the funnel-shaped spout.
To facilitate the operation, the container may be provided with a laterally projecting handle as shown at 17 in'Fig. '1, or a pull chain 27 running over a sheave 28 on an extension of the bracket, may be attached to the container as shown in Fig. 3.
It will be seen from the above description that by changing the stop pin 13 from one of the apertures 14 to another, the number or extent of the openings 15 of the bar which during upward movement of the container are brought within the spout, may be increased or diminished to vary the quantity of powder that is delivered into the spout at each up and downward motion of the container.
' It will furthermore be understood that by temporarily removing one or more of the pins from the bar, the container is easily removed and replaced by another and that by placing the powdered soap on the market in cans having central slots at their opposite ends as shown in Fig. 5, a full can may be instantly substituted for an empty one without any adjustment except the removal and replacement of the funnel 4: and one or more of the pins on the bar.
In case the receptacle supported on thebar is designed to remain a permanentpart of the fixture, it is refilled by lifting the cover 3 which normally closes the upper end of the same.
The device illustrated in Fig. 3 differs from that hereinbefore described only in that the bar 5 is connected atthe upper end of a standard 18 which has a weighted base 19 for its support upon a horizontal surface.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 4:, the container is fixed in an annular part 20 of a bracket 21 which is secured against an upright surface by means of a plate 22.
The bar used in this form of our invention has at its upper end a knob 23 and is supported upon a coiled spring 2 1 which normally maintains it in an elevated position in which the stop 10 at its lower end engages the under surface of the container.
The bar is serrated at its edges to provide downwardly pointing barbs 25 which during its up and downward movement serve to agitate the contents of the receptacle.
In operating this form of our invention, the container remains in its fixed position on the bracket and the bar is pushed downwardly against the action of the spring to bring the openings in its lower portion, within the delivery spout 4. I
We desire it understood that other modifications in the construction of our improved Copies dispensing device may be resorted to within the spirit of our invention. I
The means for securing the bars or the container to a fixed support may, for example, be of adesign and construction different from those shown in the drawings.
' The bar may be made round instead of fiat as shown in Fig. 6, and V-shaped notches 2 6 may take the place of the openings 15. r V
The quantity of powder during each movement of the bar orthe container, is determined by the size of the cavities in the bar and by their number and" relative position and the said quantity may as'before stated,
fitted in said opening and normally closing the same, said rod-member having a series of powder-carrying recesses spaced longitudinally along the same and normally disposed within the container-member, and means for mounting said device so as to permit of a vertical movement of one member relative to the other, whereby one or more of said recesses pass through said opening and outside the container-member.
2. A powder-dispensing device comprising'. a container-member having an opening in its bottom, a straight rod-member slidingly fitted in said opening and normally closing the same, said rod-member having a series of powder-carrying recesses spaced longitudinally along thesame and normally disposed within the container-member,'
means for mounting said device so as to per- .mit of a vertical'movement of one member relativeto the other, whereby one or more of said recesses pass through said opening and outside the container-member, and adjustable means for varying the extent of said movement according to thenumber of recesses it is desired to pass outsidethe container-member. I 1 i In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures in presence of twowitnesses.
