- To all whom it may concern:
.tercouple with a coupler of the Master Gar Builders type and with the parts in locked position; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan similar to Fig. 1 with the parts in knuckle thrown position, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 5 is a plan showing the knuckle swung out of operative position, and Fig. 6 is an elevation thereof; Fig. 7 is a sectionon lines VII-VII of Fig. 2, and Figs. 8 and 9 are details of the lock and knuckle respectively.
My invention relates to car couplers of the rigid jawed type, such as are described and claimed in Letters Patent No. 1,201,665, issued to me on Oct. 17, 1916, which are designed to intercouple by a transverse movement of the opposing coupler-head and to be held in engagement with each other by the overlapping and interlocking of their respective locking blocks. My invention consists in providing mechanism whereby a car coupler of such type, in addition to coupling with a coupler of its own type, may be readily intercoupled with a car coupler of the Master Car Builders or other similar type. My invention also consists in the construction and cooperation of the various parts which I shall hereinafter describe and claim.
Referring to the drawings A indicates the coupler head, B the lock and O the knuckle. The knuckle O is provided with two vertically disposed holes 2 and 3 for the alternative reception of the fulcrum or pivot pin 4. The pivot pin hole 2 for the front fulcrum is formed through the hub 5 of the knuckle, and the pivot pin hole 3 for the rear fulcrum is formed in the rearward extension 6 of the knuckle. The left jaw 7 of the coupler head A is bifurcated being comprised of the upper and lower portions 8 and 8 and having a space intermediate of said portions of a size sufficient to receive the hub 5, the extension 6 and the tail 9 of the knuckle.
' 5 Through the upper and lower portions 8 and 8 are the pivot pin holes 10, with which the hole 2 is adapted to be brought into register so that the pivot pin 4may be inserted and the knuckle C thereby held in operative position. From the left side wall of the coupler head project the apertured lugs 11 which are spaced apart sufiiciently to permit the rear extension 6 to be swung between them and the hole 3 to be brought into register with the apertures in the lugs 11, in which position the pin 4 may be inserted therethrough when it is desired to hold the knuckle in inoperative position.
The lock B operates in an inclined recess 12 in the central longitudinal plane of the coupler head A and is provided with a forwardly and downwardly extending slot 13, which with the cooperating projection 14 on the coupler head controls the movement of the lock B in the recess 12. A stop 15 is also provided on the side of lock which limits its downward movement either by contacting with the top of the knuckle tail when the knuckle is in use, or by contacting with the lower portion 8 of the jaw 7 when the knuckle is in inoperative position. The stop 15 thus prevents the look from projecting forwardly of the contour line in front of the knuckle tail and from thus interfering with coupling with a coupler of the Master Car Builders type. In the recess 12 is an inclined-guiding groove 16 with which the stop 15 cooperates when the lock B is sufliciently retracted.
When the coupler head A is to be used to intercouple with a coupler of the Master Car Builders type, the knuckle C is swung into the position shown in Fig. 3 with the hole 2 in register with the holes 10 of the portions 8 and 8 and the pivot pin 4 is transferred from the pin hole 3 to the pin hole 2 as shown. It is then in position for coupling. As the couplers come together, the knuckle tail will strike'the forward face of the lock and drive it upwardly and rearwardly out of the way, and will swing into closed position. The lock will then slide forwardly and downwardly by gravity into locked or lowermost position, in front of the knuckle tail, as is best shown in Fig. 7. When in operative position, the knuckle tail is prevented from swinging too far to the rear by the wall 17 at the rear of the space or cavity in the jaw 7, and from too great outward movement by the rear extension 6 which engages the outer ,side wall of the jaw 7 as is shown in Fig. 3. v
When the coupler head A is to be used to intercouple with a coupler of its own type the lmuckle is rotated about its front fulcrum to bring the hole 3 into register with the aperturesin the lug 11 and the pin A is withdrawn from its position in the holes 2 and 10 and inserted through the hole '3 and apertures in the lugs 11. 6. A car coupler adapted to intercouple with couplers of the Master Car Builders type and of another type, said coupler co1nprising a head, and a movable knuckle conforming the Master Car Builders contour, said knuckle in operative position being secured in and fulcrumed in the coupler head by the usual pivot in, and when in inoperative position being secured by a fulcrum to the rear of the first-named fulcrum and outside of the coupler head.
7. A car coupler adapted to intercouple with couplers of the Master Gar Builders type and of another type, said coupler comprising a head and having a movable knuckle of the Master Car Builders type, anda plurality of means on the knuckle for attaching said knuckle to said head, one of said means said knuckle having also a rear extension upon which it of the Master Car Builders 7 forming,a bearing for themounting of said knuckle in operating position, and another of said means forming-a point of attachment for securingsaid knuckle to the head in a position removed from its operating position, either of said means being non-operating when the knuckle is. attached by the other means. 7 Y
