Be it known that I, I/VILLIAM C. KOMPART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellaire, in the county of Belmont and VState of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Resilient lllheels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
rI`his invention relates to certain improvements in resilient wheels and has relation more particularly to wheel of this general character wherein a cushioned hub is employed; and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which serves to substantially eliminate all shocks and jars incident to the travel of the wheel.
rIhe invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved wheel whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with portions broken away of a wheel constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
As herein embodied, my improved wheel comprises a central disk 1 of wood or other suitable material and which serves as a hub adapted to be mounted upon the spindle S or the like and for which purpose the disk 1 at its axial center is provided with the oppositely directed sleeves 2. Surrounding the disk 1 and bearing against the periphery thereof is a pneumatic or inflatable tube 3.
Concentric to the disk 1 but spaced relatively thereto is an annular member or rim 4l. provided with a plurality of equi-distantly spaced and inwardly directed lugs or members 5 substantially semi-circular in form and adapted to frictionally engage the periphery of the tube 3 hereinbefore referred to and which is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings.
Secured to the opposite faces of the disk 1 are the metallic plates 6 provided with the radial extensions 7 which overlie the faces of the annular' member or rim 4 and have their outer extremities connected by the annular member 8 preferably integrally formed therewith.
Each of the extensions or arms 7 has its inner portion outwardly bowed, as indicated at 9, so that the same may readily bridge the tube 3, while the outer portion of said extension or arm 7 has pressed or otherwise formed therein a socket 10 in which is seated an anti-friction member. 11 herein disclosed as a spherical body and which is adapted to contact with the adjacent side plate 12 aflixed to the annular member or rim Il. The plate 12 is employed in view of the fact that it is preferred that said annular member or rim 4L be of wood, although I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to this exact construction.
Zhen the wheel is under load it will be at once self-evident that the annular member or rim 4: is capable of movement relative to the disk 1 and that the shocks or jars incident to the travel of the wheel will be substantially absorbed by the inated member 3.
In order to hold the annular member or rim 4 against unduerotary movement relative to the disk 1, I find it of advantage to have portions of each of the annular members S offset outwardly, as indicated at 1.4;, and as is particularly illustrated in Fig. 3, it will be noted that each of the offset portions 111 bridges a radially disposed rib or flange 15 secured to an adjacent face of the rim or annular' member 4 or more particularly the plate 12 secured thereto.
Straddling the rib or flange 15 is a substantially U-shaped member 16, the legs or flanges of which have pressed or otherwise formed therein the sockets 17 in each of which is seated the anti-friction member 18 adapted to ride upon the adjacent face of the flange or rib 15, whereby it will be perceived that the relative movement of the rib or flange 15 and the member 16 will be obtained with a minimum of resistance.
Interposed between and operatively engaged with each of the legs of the member 16 and the adjacent end of the offset portion 141-, is a coil spring 19 whereby it will be perceived that the member 8 and the annular member or rim 4 are capable of limited cushioned relative movement.

As herein embodied, the periphery of the annular member or rim l has suitably afiXed thereto a rubber tire T, although this in itself forms no particular part of my invention.
F rom the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a wheel constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement. and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A resilient wheel consisting of a central member, a cushioning member surrounding said central member and in contact with the peripheryv thereof, an annular member concentric to the central member and spaced relatively thereto and in contact with the cushioning member, annular members carried'by the central member and overlying the sides of the first named annular member, each of said last named annular' members being provided With an outwardly offset portion, the iirst named annular member being provided with a radial flange bridged by said offset portion, a member slidably engaged with said ange, and spring means interposed between said slidable member and the opposite ends of the offset portion.
