EMIL JOSSE AND WILI-IELM GENSECKE OF CHARLOTTENBURG, GERMANY.
AIPPARATUS FOR COOLING AIR, LIQUIDS, VAPORS, GASES, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, ram.
Application filed October 28, 1911. Serial No. 657,204.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, EMIL Jossn and WILHELM GENsEoKE, both subjects of the German Emperor, and residing at- Charlottenburg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Apparatus for Cooling Air, Liquids, Vapors, Gases, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention comprises avaporizer or vacuum apparatus containing liquid to be evaporated and thereby cooled; a steam jet ejector or injector for removing the vapors from the vaporizer and compressing such vapors and forcing them into a surface condenser; a surface condenser for receiving such vapors, suitably cooled by the circulation of cold water or other liquid, advantageously circulating under pressure, for the purpose hereinafter to be explained; and a water jet ejector for removing the condensed liquid and unliquefied vapors and gases from the surface condenser, all as let more fully hereinafter set forth and as claimed.
The water used for cooling the surface condenser can advantageously be used in the water ejector, the structure of the condenser and ejector being so arranged as to secure this result, and this cooling water being circulated under pressure.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows one form of apparatus embodying the invention and Fig. 2 shows tus.
In Fig. 1 the vaporizer a is adapted to contain liquid to be cooled, and which may be merely cooled itselfTor used for cooling other liquids or objects.
The steam jet compressor 6 is connected to the vaporizer a by the pi e d, and d1scharges into the surface con enser f where condensation takes place, and from which the water jet 7a discharges to the atmosphere through the pipe m the condensed in}- uid and uncondensed vapors and gases es caping from the condenser through the pipe connection a". In the structure shown the same water used in the condenser is used for operating the water jet ejector, the outlet of the condenser being throughthis et ejector, and the water being maintained under suitable pressure for'this purpose.
For replacing the evaporated liquid in the vaporizer a a tube connection 1! is shown a modified form of apparaleading'from the bottom of the surface condenser and adapted to supply water to the vaporizer.
A temperature several degrees below zero is obtainable in the vaporizer a with the apparatus of the present invention.
For obtaining an even lower temperature the further improvement is provided, illustrated in Fig. 2, for introducing air or other vapor or gas into the vaporizer. By the introduction of such gas or vapor further evaporation takes place in the vaporizer, and the partial pressure of the vapor in the vaporizer. becomes lower than that of the vapor when undiluted. In Fig. 2, in which the arrangement of the vaporizer a steam jet 6' and condenser f are similar to these of Fig. 1, the pipe 9 is provided for 1 introducing air from the atmosphere in regulated amount into the vaporizer. Alternatively the vapor can be taken from the condenser through the pipe 1.
We claim:
1. In combination, a vaporizer for the production of low temperatures, a surface condenser, steam jet apparatus connected with said vaporizer and said surface condenser for removing vapors from the vaporizer and forcing them into the condenser, and water jet apparatus connected with said surface condenser and arranged to remove the condensed liquid and uncondensed vapors and air from the surface condenser.
2. In an apparatus for the production of low temperatures, a surface condenser having an outlet for the cooling medium, and a water jet apparatus connected with said outlet and operated by the said cooling medium after it has passed through said condenser, whereby condensed liquid and uncondensed vapors are removed from said condenser. H
3. In, combination, a' vaporizer for the production of low temperatures, a condenser, steam jet apparatus connected with said vaporizer and said condenser for removing vapors from the vaporizer and forcing them into'the condenser and means for admitting gas or vapor into said vaporizer.
4. In combination, a vaporizer for the production of low temperatures, a surface condenser, steam jet apparatus connected with said vaporizer and said surface condenser for removing vapors from the vaporizer and forcing them into the condenser, water jet apparatus connected with,
said surface condenser and arranged to remove the condensed liquid and uncondensed vapors and air from the surface condenser, and means for admitting a predetermined amount of gas or vapor into said vaporizer.
5, In combination, a vaporizer for the production of low temperatures, means forconducting. a gas orvapor into said vaporizer a surface condenser, steam jet apparatus connected with said vaporizer and said surface condenser for removing the vapors from the vaporizer and forcing them into the condensen'water jet apparatus connect- I ed with said surface condenser and arranged to remove the condensed liquid and uncondensed vapors and air from the surface condenser and means for conducting the said gas or vapor back to the vaporizer after it has become separated from the steam EMIL JOSSE.
