Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 18, 1915. Serial No. 67,684. I
' The present invention has reference to improvements in pneumatic mattresses or the ike.
Although pneumatic mattresses have several advantages over. the ordinary quilted mattresses, particularly when they are used on shipboard, they have not been adopted.
very extensively. This is due mainly to the fact that people, in general, have become accustomed to the .ordinary quilted mattresses and they do not readily become accustomed to the usual type of pneumatic mattresses. An object of this invention'is to provide a pneumatic mattress, which, to a person reclining thereon, will feel as much like the ordinary quilted mattress as possible.
A further object of the invention is to pro- Vide a mattress which is more sanitary than those heretofore constructed. 7
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.
The invention consists in such novel .fea
'tures of construction, operation and combi- I nation of parts as shall hereinafter be described and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 represents a plan view of a mattress, embodying my invention, with the cover thereof represented in section.
Fig. 2 represents a side view of same.
Fig. 3 represents a sectional view taken on the line 3'3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 represents a view in perspective of a detail, hereinafter described.
Fig. 5 represents an enlarged side view, partly in section, of one ofthe cushions.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
- The body 5, of the herein described embodiment of the invention, consists of the longitudinal and transverse strips 7 and" 8, respectively. Said strips may be of any suitable material such as ticking, and are so spaced as to form the series of square cells 9, having their ends open. The latter are adapted to receive the substantially cube shaped a1r cushions 11, of rubber or other suitablematerial. On each cushion is the n1pple'13 which is normally closed by the inlet valve 15. Said cushions may be inflated either before or after placing them in their cells. If inflated in the latter manner, the1r nlpples are first connected to the main supply tube 17 through the subsidiary tubes 19. One end of the tube 17 is adapted to be connected to a pump or other compressed air supply.
After the air cushions 11 are inflated, the whole is inclosedby the removable cover 21, which completes the mattress.
It is to be notedthat the drawings represent the cushions as bein slightly higher than the cells, and that the1r top and bottom faces are rounded over, so that even in appearance the mattress closely resembles the ordinary quilted mattress. When a body is reclining on the mattress, the portions of the cushions protuberating beyond their cells will give easily to the weight of the body until the top surfaces of the cushions are substantially flat, then the resistance of the vertical sides of the cushions and also the walls of the cells tend to limit the amount of compression. This, in effect, is substantially what occurs when a body is lying on the ordinary quilted mattress. f
Another important feature of the invention, is particularly of a sanitary nature a. e., the mattress may be readily taken apart and reassembled, so that each unit thereof may be separately cleansed.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: I
1. A mattress of the character described comprising, in combination, a body having a series of substantially square cells, an air cushion in each of said cells, the height of said air cushions when inflated being slightly greater than the height of said cells, all substantially as set forth.
2. A mattress of the character described comprising in combination, a body having a series of substantially square cells with both their ends open, with an air cushion sustained in each of said, cells, said air cush;

and project beyond both the open ends thereof.
3. A mattress of the character described comprising, in combination, a, body provided with a series of cells having open ends and vertical walls, an air cushion in each of said cells said air cushions when inflated adapted to fill said cells and projecting slightly be- -ions when inflated adapted to fill said cells yond the open ends thereof, the said project- 10 ing portions of said cushions being rounded over substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
GEORGE EDWARD KERIVAN. ;Witnesses: f EUGENE SWEENEY, JOHN A. KERIVAN.
