speecation of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, 11W..
.applicaon ledJanuary 22, 1917. Serial No. 143,650.
Z'o all whom t may concern j Be it known that I, EDWINF. HARDEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the countyL of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- '.Appliances for Light, Heat, and Massage Treatment, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful device whereby the person may be simultaneously massaged, treated with radiant heat,
'and also, with penetrating light rays, and
my object is to provide a novel device 'of this character which is simple in construction and operation, well adapted for the purpose intended, and which can be manufactured at small cost.
The device can be used to advantage in treating various complaints, such, for instance, as improper circulation of the blood, neuralgia, headache, indigestion, lumbagosciatica, nervousness, etc.
closed by Figs. l and 2.
In order that the inventionmay be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the device assembled and ready for use. i
Fig. 2 is a broken plan view, partly in section, of certain parts disclosed by Fi 1.
Fig. 3 is ak plan view, partly in section,
with a comb vsubstituted for the roller dis- Fig. 4 is a side elevation partly in section, of one type of applicator and a bridge to support said applicator.
Figs. 5 and 6 are enlarged details of different forms of applicators adapted to be used in connection with the invention.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a parabolic ,reflectorl adapted to concentrate light and heat rays upon a comparatively limited area of the person. Said reector 1 has a lamp socket 2 provided with a c'able 3, adapted to communicate with a suitable source of electricity. In practice the free end of the cable 3 is, preferably, provided with a plug, not shown, whereby it may be connected to an ordinary incandescent lamp socket. l a
`5 designates an incandescent lamp arranged within the reflector 1 and removably connected `to the socket 2. Said lamp 5 is of sufficient power to cast rays of light and heat of such degree as to prove beneficial in the treatment of the complaints above enumerated and such others as usually respond to treatment of this character.
7 designates a bridge adapted vto be secured at its ends to the reiector 1. As said bridge 7 is at times subjected to considerable pressure it is desirable to firmly secure it to the reflector 1, so the opposite sides of the latter are notched as indicated at 8 to receive shoulders 9 on the ends of the bridge, which has rearwardly-extending lugs l0 with threaded holes to receive screws 12, extending through opposite sides of the reflector l to secure'said bridge thereto.
As indicated by Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the intermediate portion of the bridge member 7 is comparatively narrow and projects forwardly beyond the front edge of the reiector 1 to obstruct as little as possible the light and heat rays projected from the lamp 5 by said reflector In Figs. '1 and 2, the bridge member 7 is provided with an applicator in the form of a roller 14 consisting, preferably, of 0soft rubber and adapted more particularly for massaging the body. Said roller 14 is ournaled in bearings 15, extending forwardly from a shield 16, arranged in rear of the -to state that the' term applicator used throughout the specification is intended to apply to any of the applicators shown on the drawings or such others as may be attached t'o the bridge 7, as it is apparent that various forms of applicators can begemployed without departing Afrom the spirit or scope of the invention.
As disclosed by Fig. 4, it will be seen that the vbridge 7 has a central opening 19 adaptj ed to receive the threaded stem 20 of any of the applicators 21, 22 and 23 which may be readily substituted for each other when desired. As the applicators 21 and 23 are made, preferably, of soft rubber, a shield in the form of a disk 16a is inter osed between such applicators and the bridge 7, to prevent the heat and light rays from the lamp 5 striking said applicators and possibly damaging the same. f
y The applicator 23 risiy intended"moreespe- The applicator 21 isadapted more par ticularly for massaging the face and-scalp.
' to the bridge 7 by the screws 17, whichr are threaded into the openings 18.
All of the app 'cators are ofwsuch size as not to'materially interfere with ,the projectionof light andfheatray's 'fromthe lamp y5 by the a reector 1. Y
For convenience in manipulating the device to secure the massaging eect and to apply the light and. heat'to the various parts kof the person, the reflector, l is provided with a handle 26 removably thereto by athreaded shank 27 From the foregoing description, 'it isap- Secured parent that yI have produced a devicefwher`e- -by the person can be massaged and atkthe saine time receive the beneiit of radiant heatfrom the powerful electric light concentrated bythe reflector l, the penetrating rays of which stimulate the large blood yvessels and the large nerve trunks, it-beingwell understood that heat assists in stimulating circulation, while the 'light ,raysjdestroy germs. f D
- f release@ Havingthus described my invention, what I vclaim and desire to secure by Letters Pat-y ent, is:
l. In a device .of the character described,
the combination with an electric lamp and a reflector for projecting the light and heat rays from said lamp, of a rubber applicator, means for supporting said applicator in front of the reflector, and a shield for protecting the 'applicator from the light and heat rays.
2. In a the, combination with an electric lamp' and aV reflector for projecting the light and kheat raysA from saidlamp, of an applicator, and
device of the character described, u
a bridge secured at ends to the reiiector p and projecting forwardly therefrom to support the applicatorin advance of the reflector.
3. ln a device of the character described, the combination with an electric lamp and a reflector for projecting the light and heat rays from said lamp, said reflector havingA two oppositely-disposed notches therein, a
f bridge having shoulders: to fit into Ythe Jnotches and lugs to t agains'tthe sides of the reflector, thumb screws for engaging the reflector and said lugs, and an applicator bridge. f
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.y
. 'Witnesses: i, F. G. FISCHER, f
