of Schenectady, county of Schenectady, andv State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsrin Locomotive-Tenders, of which the followingv is a the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereof. l The invention relates to that type of locomotive tenders in which the fuel 'is in part carried on a deck above the water tank and back of the fuel bin; vits object being to provide improved means for moving the fuel forwardly on vthe deck in order that it may slide. or be moved down the slope sheet at the rear end of 'the bin and com ln its broader aspects the invention con- Sis'ts in a tender of the type defined, with a l Q movable bulkhead at therear ofthe deck and power means for drawing 'the-bulkhead forward. It consists fu-rther in various details as hereinafter pointedy out. In the 'accompanying drawings, v
Figure 1 is a detail plan viewof the improved ,tender; A
Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal vertical section of the tender, some of-'the parts being shown in elevation; and
3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3--3 of Fig. V2. y
The tender is represented at 10, and the inner walls of its fuel bin at 11, 12. The bin is provided with the usual slope sheet 13 forming its rear' wall, and from 'the upper end of the slope sheet extends the Hoor of the fuel deck 14, the rear end of the deck being provided with a permanent wall 15.
A movable bulkhead 16 is located on the deck, and preferably, as shown, extends the entire width thereof. Before the deck is loaded with fuel this bulkhead is moved back to the wall 15. As shown the bulkhead 16 is given the form of a carriage, having a bottom 17 and side walls 18, 19,--this carriage being provided with small wheels or 19, are provided with similar outstanding4 lips at their forward ends, as shown at 23,

24, and which are substantially. in engage' ment with the side walls of the deck, these walls forming continuations `of the walls 11,
12. A guide rail 25, 26, may be attached to the walls 11, 12, and engaged by the carriage toy prevent any tendency ofthe latter being tilted. Power may end of the .deck and inclosed within a caslng 28, which, in this instance, serves also tol cover the upper end of a water conduit 'shown as detachably connected to a crosshead ofthe motor piston by means of loops be applied for advancing the bulkheadl in a variety of ways. lin the struc-ture disclosed there is shown for [this purpose a motor 27 ,mounted at thel forward y 34, hooked over pins 35. As shown, a secf,
f ond set of loops, as 36, is provided on the cables, and are adapted to be hooked over the pins 35 aftery the bulkhead has been moved forward tovsom'e extent. The cables 32, 33, are preferablyv guided over pulleys,
as 37, mounted at the forward end of the v:fuel deck. In" practice the cables 3 2, 33,
may be entirely disconnected from the motor when fuel. f l y After the fireman has removed the fuel from Athe shoveling deck 31, he may set the motor 27 in motion and,by means of the the tender is first lloaded with pusher 30,'ymove the conten'ts of the bin forward gradually to the shoveling` floor. When the bin is empty he engages the hooks 34 at the forward ends of the 'cables with the pins 35, and a single forward moveh ment of the motor piston will carry the bulkhead forward and thus move a part of the fuel from the deck into the bin. The' motor may. if desired, be given a number of strokes for the purpose of pushing this fuel down the slope sheet to' the'shoveling platform, the cables 32, 33, being slackened during the instroke of the motor. When, more fuel is required from the deck, .the
the bulkhead 16 still farther advanced. Before reloading the tender with fuel, the bulkhead is moved back to the rear end of the deck by hand.
The motor 27 is preferably operated by steam, and a controlling valve is shown at 38 as being mounted on the forward end of the tender within convenient reach of the fireman. In the structure shown 'the forward movement of the bulkhead is limited by the casing 28. When the construction of the tender is such that this casing is not required, the bulkhead may, of course, be moved forwardly so as 'to discharge the deck of the entire load. Y
Various changes in the form of construction may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
I claim as .my inventlonl. In combination, a tender having a coal bin and a fuel deck back of the bin, and a bulkhead movable over the deck and adapted to advance the mass of fuel thereon.
2. In combination, a tender having a coal bin, a fuel deck back of the bin, a bulkhead movable over the'deck and adapted to advance the mass of fuel thereon, and means for maintaining the bulkhead in upright position.
' 3. In combination, a tender having a coal bin, a fuel'deck back ofthe bin, and a bulkhead having a forwardly projecting floor and movable over the deck and adapted to advance the mass of fuel thereon.
4. In combination, a tender having a coal bin, a fuel deck back of the bin, and a bulkhead having a forwardly projecting floor and side walls and movable over the deck and adapted to advance the mass o'f fuel thereon.
5. In combination, a tender having alfuel deck, and a bulkhead having a forwardly projecting floor, such floorhaving a downwardly and forwardly inclined lip at its Vat their forward ends, and movable over the deck and adapted to advance the mass of fuel thereon.
7. In combination, a tender having a coal bin, and a fuel deck back of the bin, a bulkhead movable over the deck and adapted to advance the mass of fuel thereon, a motor at the forward Aend of the deck, and a cable connecting a movable member of the motor with the bulkhead.
8. In combination, a tender having a fuel bin and a fueldeck back of the bin, a pusher reciprocable over a fuel supporting wall of the bin, a motor for actuating the pusher, a bulkhead movable over the deck and adapted to advance the fuel thereon, and a cable for connecting the bulkhead with a member actuated by the motor.
9. In combination, a tender having a fuel bin and a fuel deck back of the bin, a pusher reciprocable over a fuellsupporting wall of the bin, a motor for actuating the pusher, a bulkhead movable over the deck and adapted to advance the fuel thereon, and a cable for connecting the bulkhead with a member actuated by the motor, such cable having a plurality of attaching means for engagement with such member.
