ELECTRICAL SAFETY DEVICE FOR RAILOLADS.
i To aZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE EDWARD CHAR- RoN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Ottawa, in the county of Carleton, Province of Ontario, 'and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and usefulv Improvements in Electrical Safety Devices for Railroads, of which the following is a specification. i
My invention relates to improvements in electrical safety device for railroads as described inthe present specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The invention relates particularly to means for indicating through an alarm bell or colored light anything wrong with the rail joint, and consists essentially in the combination with a plurality of electric wires, of means secured on the rail and fish plate, whereby on said fish plate being displaced `said means contact to complete the circuit and thus operate the indicator or light to give the alarm or signal.
The objects of my invention are to provide a new, simple, efficient and inexpensive means for announcing either by an alarm bell, signal or colored Vlight when anythingV is wrong with the rai joint, such as spreadof the rails the norm-al position and condition of the fish plate.
A further object is to provide a device of this kind that can be readily fitted on any existing road with most satisfactory results.
A still further objecJr is to obviate or prenotice beforehand, and thus insuring safety to passengers.
With these and other objects in view, which will hereafter be more fully describedand claimed, reference is now had to the accompanying drawings in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device.
IIig. 2 is an enlarged cross section on line Y-Y of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail side view of the electric connection. A v
Fig. 4t is a cross section on line X--X of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a diagram of the wiring.
Referring to 'the drawings, A and A1 are a pair' of abutting vrails mounted on the Specification bf I-.etters Patent.

spectively. Located below the said boxes is a conduit M housing a plurality vof electrical wires which in the embodiment illustrated.
are four in number, 2, /02 g2 and f1 respectively, the first and last of which are bridgedV by the wire Z while the wires 2 and k2 are connected to the opposite terminals of a battery or source of power M. v
' The wires 7a2 and g2 are connected by the wires 1 and cl to the lug z' and rod c carried, by the box (Z and the fish plate B respectively. These wires k2 a1' l g2 are further connected through the wires f and g1 to the lug e and the rod l and the fish plate B, while the wires g2 and f1 are connected to a suitable signal N. v
In the operation of the device, should either of the rails A or A1 become displaced so that either of the rods Z.: or g Should be' brought into contact with the inner walls of the casings (Z or al1 respectively, an electric circuit will be closed including the source of power M, the wire Z, the Wire f1, signal N, wire g2, Wire k1, rod c, wire lez, back to the source of power M operating the said signal and indicating that g mounted on the box al* unica.
box al, lug z', wire 1,
there is something the matter with the rail the wire 2, wire Z, wire f1, signal N, wire g2,
the wire f, lug e, the box all, the rod g, wire g1, wire 7a2, back to the source of power M, thereby operating the signal N so indicating that there is something the matter with the rail joint.
What I claim for j The combination with a rail 'oint, includ-` ing a pair of abutting rails an a fish plate of hollow boxes mounted on the'rails an provided at one end with lugs, rods operatively mounted in the fishl plate having one end embraced by the hollow boxes, a slgnal,
my invention is:
a source of power,y and rrneans for closing a' the county of Carleton. addxProV'nce of Oncirout including the signal, source of-power tau'o,V this 3l day of Deoenloerl1914.4
and the said rods and boxes should the rails become displaced. 5 In testimony whereof. I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses ai;l the city of Ottawmn GEoRGEEDWARD CHARBON. A Witnesses: l
