To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sunnyside. in the county of Carbon and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Tm provenients in Tilling-h'lachines, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to tilling machines, and it has for its object to produce a machine of simple and improved construction which by proper arrangement and adjustment of the component parts may be utilized as a rotary riding plow and inulsher, as a cultivator, or as a harrow.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and improved machine of the character indicated embodying a wheeled frame, a shaft carried thereby, radial cutting elements connected with said shaft, and means whereby the shaft may be'raised or lowered with respect to the ground; means being also provided whereby the shaft may be rotated when desired so as to produce a positive cutting action.
WVith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the in vention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.

of being thrown out of An axle 20, which may be made of angle I 1ron, is connected with the angle bar 15 and the braces 18 of the frame structure in advance of the cross bar 16, said axle being equipped with spindles 21 on which the ground wheels 22, 23 are supported for rotation. A tongue 24 is securely connected with the frame structure, said tongue being reinforced by hounds 25, and said tongue serving to support a caster wheel 26.
The brackets 17 afford bearings for a shaft 27, one end of which carries a sprocket wheel 28 connected by a chain 29 with a sprocket wheel 30 which is mounted on one of the spindles 21 adjacent to the ground 'wheel 22, said sprocket wheel and ground wheel being provided with interengaging clutch members, as'seen at 31, so that the sprocket wheel may be rotated by the ground wheel for the purpose of transmitting motion to the shaft 27. For the purpose of throwing the clutch device 31 out of gear, the sprocket wheel 30 may be moved lengthwise of the spindle by means of a suitably arranged shipping lever 32. The spindle carrying the ground wheel 23 has been shown as being equipped with two sprocket wheels 33, 34-, one of which may be driven by a chain 33 conveying power derived from any suitable source, while the other sprocket 34: serves to transmit motion through a chain 35 to the shaft 27, which latter may thus be positively rotated. A clutch device 36 whereby the sprocket wheels 33, 34 may be connected together is capable gear by moving the sprocket wheel 3t lengthwise of the spindle by means of a shipping lever 37, thereby interrupting the transmission of motion.
The brackets 17 are connected by rods 38 with cranks 39 extending from a rock shaft 40, which latter is operable by a hand lever H by means of which the brackets 17 may be adjusted to vary the position of the shaft 27 with respect to the ground.
The shaft 27 is equipped with earth engaging teeth or cutting members 41, each of which is slightly curved in the direction of its length. the curved portion being tapered so as to present a sharp cutting edge 42. Each of the teeth has a concave face 43 equipped with a projecting tenon 44. The shaft 27 is provided with sockets 45 for the reception of the tenons M, said sockets being arranged equidistantly in circumferential series, the sockets of alternate series being disposed in staggering relation, thereby arranging the teeth in the most advantageous manner to cause some of theteeth to be constantly in engagement with the ground when the machine is in operation. The concave faces 43 of the teeth are of a radius corresponding to that of the shaft 27 on which the teeth will thus become tightly seated when the tenons 44 are inserted in the respective sockets. The shaft 27 is also provided with threaded apertures 46 at right angles to the respective sockets 45, said apertures being for the reception of set screws 47 that engage the tenons 43, thereby securing the teeth firmly but detachably in position, the rotation of the teeth about their respective axes being prevented by engagement of the concave faces 43 with the face of the shaft.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by manipulation of the hand lever II the brackets supporting the tooth carrying shaft may be swung about the axis of the cross bar 16, thereby raising or lowering the shaft and causing the teeth to engage the ground to the requisite depth. The shaft when the machine is in operation may be positively rotated either by power transmitted, from the ground wheel 22 or by power received from any suitable source, such as the motor of a tractor which may be employed for drawing the machine over the ground. For plowing and mulshing the land the tooth carrying shaft may be driven at any required speed by properly proportioning the transmission gear. WVhen the machine is to be used for cultivating potatoes, beets or other plants growing in roWs, some of the teeth 41 may be detached from the shaft so that the dirt will be stirred and Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the agitated only at the 'the depth of penetration of the teeth may be regulated by raising or lowering the shaft by means of the hand lever H. The machine may be drawn over the ground by animal power or by a tractor, and it will not only be found to be useful for a variety of purposes, as herein set forth, but it will be found that slight friction will be devel oped by the use thereof, thereby effecting a considerable saving in power. The general construction is simple and inexpensive, and the machine will be found to be thoroughly eflicient for the purposes for which it is provided.
For the purpose of protecting the operator from dirt and mud that will be thrown up by the action of the tooth carrying shaft when the machine is in operation, there is provided a shield 50, the same being constructed of sheet metal of suitable gage reinforced at the ends thereof by angle bars 51. This shield is securely mounted on the cross bar 16 from which it extends upwardly and rearwardly, being curved in the direction of the tooth-carrying shaft, as best seen in Fig. 2. It will be observed that this shield will not only protect the operator from dirt thrown up during the operation of the machine, but that, if the operator should he accidentally thrown from the seat, the said shield will prevent his falling di rectly on the teeth carried by the shaft.

In a machine of the class described, a frame structure including a semi-circular angle bar and a diametrical cross bar connected therewith, a wheel carrying axle supporting the frame,'brackets pivoted on the cross bar, a tooth carrying shaft rotatably supported by the brackets, and an upwardly curved shield secured on the cross bar and extending in the direction of the tooth carrying shaft, said shield having reinforcing angle bars at the ends thereof.
