Description

(2M JOHN ORMEROD.
Improvement in Bri'cK Machines.
Patented Ian. 9, 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN OBMEROD, OF PEEKSKILL, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO PEEKSKHJL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRICK-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,642, dated January 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ORMEROD, of Peekskill, in the county of Westchester, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Method of Operating the Mold-Drivers of Brick-Machines, the same being so constructed that the mold is driven out at the proper time by the power used to operate the machine, and further so constructed that should any obstruction enter the clod-cutter to prevent the passage of the mold the mechanism will yield before an injurious pressure can be exerted on the mold, thereby saving a great expense in repairs of molds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the frame of a brick-machine, showing the arrangement of my invention and the parts it is intended to operate. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference refer to like parts in the drawing.
a a a, frame of machine; I) b, carriage on which molds are placed; 0, mold-driver; d, rock-shaft by which mold-driver is operated;
c, connection between rock-shaft and driver.
In forcing out the mold the rock-shaft d is turned in such a manner as to bring the driver 0 forward or toward the rock-shaft.
The construction and operation of my improvement are as follows, viz.:
A wheel, A, having a friction-cam, B, on its periphery is placed on the counter-shaft f in place of the crank which is used in certain machines to operate the pressing mechanisms, and having a crank-pin at O to operate such mechanism when used on such machines. This wheel is made to revolve in the direction indicated by the arrow. D is a friction-wheel having flanges at each side projecting beyond the periphery, and being secured to the end of a shaft, E, which revolves in a stationary bearing at F and at Gin a bearing having a slight lateral movement, being held to its position against the set-screw H by means of a spiral or volute spring, I, shown in dotted lines. A
wheel A revolves in the operation of the machine no motion is communicated to the rod M until the friction-cam B comes in contact with it, when it will be raised by friction so long as said contact is maintained, and when this contact ceases the rod M falls to its original position. The cam B is placed in such position in the periphery of the wheel A with reference to the crank-pin at G that at the proper stage of the pressing operation the rod M is raised, carrying with it the arm K, and, by means of the shaft d and connections 6, bringing forward the driver 0 and forcing out the mold. The cam B is also made of such length that as soon as the mold is forced far enough the rod M is released and falls back, carrying with it the driver 0 in time to receive another mold before the pressing operation be gins. The pressure of the spring I, and consequently the friction between the cam B and the rod M, is so adjusted by the set-screw J that, should a stone or other obstruction enter the clod-cutter, preventing the passage of the mold, the cam B will slide upon the rod M, thus preventing the breakage of the mold.
I do not claim as new the operation of the mold-driver by the power driving the machine; and I do not claim as new the intermittent movement produced by the friction-cam.
I do claim as new and desire to secure the same by Letters Patent- The combination, in a brick machine, of wheel A provided with cam B, adjustable wheel D, rod M, bellcrank lever K, rockshaft d, connecting-rod e, and mold-driver a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN ORMEROD.
