To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OTTO KAROI-IER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ganton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Dispensing Device, of which the following is a V specification.

My invention relates to dispensing devices and consists of areceptacle designed to hold a quantity of oyster crackers, lump sugar, salted peamilts or other food stuff of suitable size and shape to be dispensed in 4 this manner, the articles contained therein adapted to be removed in small quantities when desired.

The present invention relates more particularly to a device of this character in which the crackers or other articles contained therein will: at all times be keptunder cover so that they will remain fresh and in a sanitary condition, and the device is more especially adapted to be usedin dining rooms, restaurants or public eating places in general, it being impossible for the user to handle any of the articles contained in the device, except those which he dispenses therefrom for his own use.

The object of the present invention is to provide a dispensing device in which the articles to be dispensed are kept in a sanitary state and may be dispensed in small quantities from time to time.

Another object is to provide such a device in which it will be impossible in operating the device to handle any of the articles contained therein, except those withdrawn fOr his own use by the operator.

With these objectsin view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described,

illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the append ed claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction may he made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

The containing receptacle 1 and cover 2 are preferablyformed of glass, although they may be made of any other suitable material. The cover 2 is preferably provided with a downwardly disposed annular flange '2? adapted to fit within the containing receptacle at the upper edge thereof for the purpose of retaining the cover upon the contaming receptacle. The reduced lower portion 3 of thecontaining receptacle is adapted to fitsnugly within a ring 4. carried upon a supporting leg 5, said leg having a foot 6 which is attached to a suitable base 7, the ring, leg and base being preferably formed of metal.

Thus it will be seen that a dispensing cup is provided which is open at the bottom and provided with a series of apertures 23 between the ribs 13.

The containing receptacle 1 is filled with oyster crackers or any other suitable and de sirable articles adapted to be dispensed therefrom and in order to procure a small quantity of the articles contained therein the user places his hand, palm upward beneath V the inverted dispensing cup 10 and raises the cup to the position shown in dotted lines Fig. 1. As the dispensing cup is thus raised it disturbs the crackers or articles contained in the receptacle so that a small number of the crackers will pass through the apertures 23 into the interior of the dispensingcup and will fall into the hand of the operator.

The hand, supporting the dispensing cup is then withdrawn with the crackers contained therein and the dispensing cup having its support removed will drop back into its normal position, such as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. The flared portions 1A of the ribs coming into contact with the upper portion of the neck 9 of the containing receptacle will prevent any further downward movement of the cup. It will be noticed that the segmental cover sections 19 maybe raised into the position of the drawings. the purpose of preventing crumbing of any crackers, which might extend beneath said covers when the dispensing cup is allowed to fall into its normal position. 7

Although the drawings and above specification disclose the best mode in which I have contemplated embodying my invention I desire to be not limited to the details of such disclosure, for, in the further practical application of my invention, many changes in form and construction may be made, as circumstances require or experience suggests, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A dispensing device comprising a containing receptacle provided with an aperture in the bottom thereof, an inverted dispensing cup slidably mounted within said This construction is for better illustrated in Fig. 4'

2. A dispensing device, comprising a containing receptacle provided with an aperture in the bottom thereof, an inverted dispensing cup slidably mounted within said aperture and a plurality of hinged covers provided upon the top of said dispensing cup.

A dispensing device comprising a containing receptacle provided with an inclined bottom having an aperture located in the lowest point thereof, a downwardly disposed neck located around said aperture, an inverted dispensing cup slidably mounted within said neck, said cup providedwith apertures, vertical ribs provided around the side wall of said cup, said ribs being outwardly flared at their upper extremities and a plurality of hinged segmental covers prO- vided upon the top of said cup, said hinged segmental covers being for the purpose of preventing breaking of any of the articles contained in said dispensing device which might extend beneath said covers when the dispensing cup drops to its normal position.

A dispensing device comprising a containing receptacle provided with an inclined bottom having an aperture located in the lowest point thereof, a downwardly disposed neck located around said aperture, an inverted dispensing cup slidably mounted within said neck, said cup provided with apertures, vertical ribs provided around the side wall of said cup, said ribs being out- ,wardly flared at their upper extremities and a plurality of hinged segmental covers provided upon the top of said cup, each of said segmental covers provided with a downwardly disposed flange around its outer edge, said hinged segmental covers being for the purpose of preventing brealn'ng of any of the articles contained in said dispensing device which might extend beneath said covers when the dispensing cup drops to its normal position.

5. A dispensing device, comprising a containing receptacle provided with an inclined bottom having an aperture located in the lowest point therein, an inverted dispensing cup slidably mounted within said aperture, said cup provided with apertures in its side wall, a spaced plate connected at the top of said cup, adownwardly disposed peripheral annular flange provided upon said plate, the
