Be it known that I, JAY H. Dnwnnsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moscow, in the county of Hickman, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Match- Boxes; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a pocket match box.

An object of the invention resides in the provision of a match box which will automatically engage, eject and ignite a match, and maintain the match in a convenient position so that it may be used.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of means for discharging the match after it is used.

WVith these and other objects in View, such as will appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and fall ing within the scope of the appended claims.

In the drawing 1 have illustrated a container 1 which is provided with an extension 2 at its upper end, which upper end is entirely open. A cover 3 is pivoted to the container 1, at i, and is normally pressed open by a spring 5. The edge of the container 1 adjacent to the cover 3 comprises a plate 6 which is provided with an abrasive substance on its inner face and is pivoted, at 7, being pressed into a closed position by a coil spring 8. A follower plate 9 is pivoted, at 10, within the container 1 and the lower end thereof is urged toward the plate 6 by a coil spring 10 so that the follower assumes an inclined position and urges the matches,

which are disposed between it and the plate 6, toward the said last mentioned plate.

In order that these matches may be engaged, ignited and ejected from the con tainer, I have mounted a tubular casing 11 within the container 1 in which a rod 12 is slidably mounted, being normally urged upwardly by a spring 13. A bar 1 1 is pivoted, at 15, to this rod 12 and is moved in alinement with the rod by a suitable spring 16. The shank 17 of a match holder 18 is rotatably mounted in the upper end of the bar 1 1 and encircling this shank is a coiled spring 19 which tends to rotate the holder and maintain it in a predetermined position with relation to the bar 1 1. A finger piece 20 is secured to the end of the shank 17 and is provided with a shoulder 21. A trip member 22 is slidably mounted in a bracket 23 on the bar 14 and is provided with a notch 2A, which notch is adapted to engage the bar 1% to maintain the trip member in a re tracted position against the action of a spring 25 which encircles the shank 17. This spring 25 bears against an eye 26 on the trip member 22, which eye encircles the shank 17 and slides thereon so that it will engage the end of the match and eject it from the holder 18. A dog 27 is pivoted to the bar 14 and is adapted, when the parts are folded and within the container 1, to engage a bar 28 to maintain the parts in such folded position. This dog 27 is provided with an extension 27 which extends at right anglesthereto and substantially parallel to the bar 14. The end of this extension 27 is provided with a shoulder 28 which is adapted to engage the shoulder 21 on the finger piece 20 for a purpose which will later appear. A releasing member 29 having a handle 30 thereon is mounted within the extension 2 of the container 1 and is adapted, when actuated, to disengage the dog 27 from the bar 28 and to disengage the shoulder 28 from the shoulder 21 on the finger piece 20.

In operation assuming that the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing a match will be engaged in the holder 18. The finger piece 20 will be folded upon the bar 1A and the shoulder 28 will engage the shoulder 21 on the finger piece so that .the latter will be held in such position against the action of the spring 19. When the dog 27 is released the shoulder 28 will be disengaged from the shoulder 21 and the shank 17 together with the holder 18 and the finger piece 20 will immediately rotate. At the same time the rod 12 will be projected upwardly, the cover 3 opened and the head of the match lighted upon the plate 6. The parts will then assume the positions shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.

When it is desired to eject a match after it has been burned the trip member 22 may be disengaged from the bar 14 and the spring 25 will move the eye 26 into engagement with the end of the match and eject it from the container.

When it is desired to again fold the device the finger piece 20 is moved pivotally until it lies upon the bar 1 1 at which time the shoulder 28 will engage the shoulder 21 and the parts will be held in such positions. The bar 14 together with the elements carried thereby may then be moved on the pivot 15 and pushed into the container 1 against the tension of the spring 13 until the dog 27 engages the bar 28 at which time the said elements will be held within the container in the positions shown in Fig. 2. During this inward movement a match will be engaged in the holder 18 and held in place for a subsequent operation.

While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it .has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that parmounted on the bar, means for rotating the match holder and means for ejecting matches therefrom.

In a match box, the combination with a container, of a follower for moving the matches toward one wall of the container, a pivotally mounted match holder mounted on a sliding rod and adapted tomove into said container and means for moving the holder pivotally upon its movement from the container.

In a match boX, the combination with a container, of a rod slidably mounted therein, means for urging said rod outwardly, a

bar pivoted on the rod, a spring for moving the bar in substantial alinement with the rod, a match holder rotatably mounted on the bar, a finger piece secured to the match holder, a trip member slidably mounted on the match holder, means for moving the trip member in one direction to eject a match from the holder, the finger piece being adapted to engage the trip member to prevent such movement, a dog carried by the .Gcpies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D.
