BAKER S PEEL.
Application filed July 16, 1915.
To all y/r/Lom t may conf/'cra Be it known that l, LEON Sci-Ineens, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invent ed certain new and useful Improvements in Bakers Feels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bakers peels of a type similar to that disclosed and broadly claimed in my prior Patent No. 1,145,617.
r:[he present invention lhas for its main object t0 improve the construction of the peel disclosed in the above patent, to reduce its cost and to facilitate its operation in use.
A further object is to provide a peel which is especially adapted for handling small articles such as rolls, although it may with equal facility be used for larger farticles such loaves of bread, etc.
The various further objects and advantages will more fully appear from the following detailed description and the features of novelty7 will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing illustrating the invention,
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved bakers peel.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section taken along the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section taken along the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail t0 the drawings, the blade 10 of the peel is provided at each longitudinal edge with a vertical wall 11. These walls preferably decrease in height toward the forward edge 12 of the blade and merge with the latter at a point several inches from the edge. Adjacent each wall 11, there is preferably formed in the blade a corrugation 13 which serves to stiffen and strengthen the blade. As a mounting for the blade, l provide a clamp member which is preferably formed in two parts 14l 15. These parts may be stamped out of sheet metal and formed so as to present a transverse socket 16 in which the blade is securely held by rivets 17. The clamp member is also formed so as to present a longitudinal socket 18 in which a handle 19 is fitted. The latter is secured in the socket and at the same time the sections 14--15 are secured to each other by means of bolts 20.
Each of the sections lil- 15 are preferably Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1917.,
Serial NO. 40,156.
stiffened by corrugations 21 22 and the transverse socket portions 16 are strengthened by an arcuate corrugation 23 which communicates with the longitudinal corrugations 21-22.
lVithin the bend of the corrugations 23, there is formed in each of the sections an aperture 2-1- which communicates directly with the longitudinal corrugations 21 22. A free passage is thus offered for air to pass along the length of the longitudinal socket 18. ln this way the handle 19 is rendered insulated to a degree from' the heat conducted by the material of the socket and becomes, therefore, less heated than it would` be in the absence of these air passages.
To further stiffen the members M l, ll form corrugations 1Gd and 16h therein rcspectively in alinement and closely fitting with the longitudinal corrugations 13 in the blade.
As it is desirable to have the peel of as light a4 weight as possible, metal such as aluminum is preferably employed. However, when the peel is .in use, the blade freouently strikes the walls of the oven and the forward edge 12 becomes chipped. To obviate this, I clamp upon the edge 12 of the blade a steel shield 25. 1n this way, the dan ger of the edge chipping is entirely elim1- nated'and thelife ofthe pecl is increased.
It is to be observed that by reason of the side walls 13, the peel is peculiarly adapted foruse when the bake is composed entirely of rolls7 since the walls prevent the latter from slipping off the edges of the blade. In removing` the rolls from the oven, on account of their peculiar position, it is sometimes' desirable and often necessary to scoop the latter up sidewise instead of the usual way of scooping them onto the front edge 12 directly. The walls 11 are, therefore, as above mentioned. tapered as they approach the edge 12 until they merge into the blade several inches from the edge. ln this way there is sufficient room left near the forward end of the blade to render the sidewise scooping possible. It will be readily seen also that the walls 11 tend to supplement the longitudinal corrugations to impart increased stiffness to the blade.
Although I have characterized the peel as being best adapted for rolls, it will, of course, be obvious that the same may be used for bakes of any other character.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a peel which is very simple in construction, efficient in operation and cheap to manufacture. Since it is preferably in constructions of this character that the weight be reduced to a minimum, I have formed the socket member of sheet metal, preferably aluminum, and by the advantageous disposition of corrugations have rendered the same very strong and durable. In order to insulate the handle to some extent from the heat conducted by the socket member, I have provided means whereby columns of air may circulate along the length of the longitudinal socket on both sides of the handle. I have provided the blade with means Whereby it is rendered peculiarly effective for use when the bake is composed of rolls. I have also provided means whereby the blade is rendered proof against chipping which it would otherwise suffer from impingement upon the walls of the oven.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A bakers peel comprising a blade of thin sheet metal, a pair of clamp members to which the blade is attached, said clamp members being formed with a socket for holding the width of the blade and a socket in which the handle is inserted, tapering walls upstanding from the longitudinal edges and merging with the body of the blade a distance from the forward edge thereof, and corrugations in the blade adjacent the walls and eXtending along the length thereof Vto stiiien the blade.
2. A bakers peel comprising a thin sheet metal blade, a pair of sheet metal clamp members between which said plate is attached, said clamp members being provided with a transverse socket in which the blade is secured, a longitudinal socket in which the handle is secured, and longitudinal corrugations formed upon said clamp members to strengthen the same.
3. A bakers peel comprisingasheet metal blade, a mounting therefor to which the blade is secured, said mounting being formed with a socket for the insertion of the handle, and air passages about the socket for preventing undue heating of the handle.
4L. A bakers peel comprising a thin sheet metal blade, a sheet metal mounting in which. said blade is attached, said mounting being provided with a transverse Socket in which the blade is secured, a longitudinal socket in which the handle is secured, and air passages formed within the mounting about said handle.
5. A bakers peel comprising a thin sheet metal blade, a pair of sheet metal clamp members in which said blade is adapted to be attached, said clamp members having a transverse socket in which the blade is secured, a longitudinal socket in which the handle' is fitted, means for joining the members together at the longitudinal socket and also for securing the handle therein, corrugations formed in each of the 'clamping members to strengthen the same, and apertures communicating with the transverse socket and with the corrugations whereby air is admitted to pass freely therethrough and circulate about said handle.
6. A bakers peel comprising a thin sheet metal blade having a pair of walls upstanding from the longitudinal edges thiereof and terminating a distance from the forward edge of said blade, a sheet metal clamp member to which the blade is attached, said clamp member having a transverse socket in which the blade is secured, a longitudinal socket in which the handle is secured, and convex corrugations formed in said clamping member about the longitudinal socket to strengthen the same.
7. A bakers peel comprising a thin sheet metal blade having a pair of walls upstanding from the longitudinal edges thereof and terminating a distance from the forward edge of said blade, a sheet metal clamp member to which the blade is attached, said clamp member having a transverse socket in which the blade is secured, a longitudinal socket in which the handle is secured, and convex corrugations formed in said clamping member about the longitudinal socket, there being apertures formed in said clamping member communicating with the transverse socket and with the corrugations whereby air may circulate about said handle.
