Description

UNITED STA'rEs PATENT FFIGE.
JOHN DODGE, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES FARREB,.OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROV EMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,582, dated J annary 9, 1872.
Specification describing a certain Improved Gauge-Wheel for Plows, invented by JOHN consists in separately attaching both the spin-,
dle and wheel by a two-part box formed and arranged at the lower end of the standard, and united by set-screws or bolts. The spindle is thus entirely inclosed; a very superior support furnished the wheel; the entrance of dirt precluded as effectually as possible; and the complete isolation of the attaching screws or bolts secured; while the removability of the spindle and the free rotation of the wheel thereon are preserved.
Figures 1 and 2 are perspectives of the several parts of the device separated. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the same in working condition.
A represents the standard which may pass through a slot in the front of the plow-beam or a staple at the side thereof, and has a slot, at, extending throughout the greater part of its length, which, by means of a binding-screw, enables the standard to be set and secured at any height, according to the desired depth of furrow. At the lower end of the standard A is the upper half B of the box, which may be either cast with the standard or suitably attached thereto, and which, in connection with the lower half B of said box, constitutes a casing, within which the inner end of the spindle or axle C is inclosed. The parts B B are separably united by screws or bolts. Within the box B B are formed two circumferential grooves, 12 b and on the spindle O and the inner end d of the hub of the wheel D corresponding flanges 'c d are formed to occupy the same. The spindle O and wheel D are thus both securely attached by one and the same fastening. The groove 1) and flange d are so fitted as.to permit a free rotation of the wheel, but prevent wabbling or staggering. A projection, b in the groove b entering a recess, 0, in the flange c, prevents the rotation of the spindle with the wheel. The outer end (1 of the hub of the wheel receives and incloses the outer end of the spindle. -A slot may be formed in the lower half B of the box for the purpose of letting out any dirt which may obtain entrance thereto. The recess in the box and hub of the wheel, and the flange (I on the latter, may be chilled to insure greater hardness and durability. When the parts are assembled and the Wheel in operation, it will be perceived that the box B B, spindle O, and standard A are immovable with respect to each other, and that the wheel turns freely on the spindle, being prevented from wabbling or staggering by the arrangement of parts before described, which also precludes the entrance of dirt.
I have shown the box B B as divided in a line in the plane of the axis of the spindle; but this is not a necessary feature-4t may be otherwise divided.
What I claim in this my invention is-- The box .B B constructed with the groove 1) b in combination with the flanges c and 01 formed on the detachable spindle or axle G, and wheel D for attaching the same to the standard A, said spindle projecting from the standard, and the wheel rotating thereon, all substantially as herein shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
JOHN DODGE.
