DISK GUARD FOR GRAIN BINDERS. APPLICATION 'nuzo AUG-9.1916.

FRANK DU'MLER, OF ISABELLA, OKLAHOMA.
DISK-GUARD FOR GBAIN-BINDERS.
Specification of Letters 'Eatent.
Patented May a, roar.
Application filed August 9, 1916. Serial No. 114,024.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK DUMLnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tsabella, in the county of Major and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Disk-Guards tor Grain- Binders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved disk guard for use in connection with a grain binder and particularly in connection with a Deering or other binder of that class in which the disk extends through the opening in and also extends below the breast plate, and to prevent the stem of the disk from becoming wound with straw so that the needle fails to place the binding twine in the notches of the disk and thus prevents some of the bundles from becoming bound, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which may be readily attached to the under side of the breast plate and which serves to prevent the straw in the bundle from coming in contact with the disk and hence keeps the bundle from interfering with the operation oi? the knotter mechanism.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a portion of a Deering grain binder provided with a disk guard constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the guard.
For the purposes of this specification, the deck of a Deering grain binder is indicated at 1, the binder arm at 2, the breast plate at 3, the needle at 4, and the disk of the knotter mechanism at 5. The breast plate has an opening 3 to clear the disk and this opening is necessarily of considerable width, as the disk extends through this opening and below the breast plate.
It is a fault of machines of this class, that occasionally the straw becomes wound around the stem of the disk, prevents the lacing or the binding twine in the notches of the disk by the needle and hence prevents the successful operation of the knotter mechanism, so that some of the bundles are discharged in an unbound condition.
It is the object of my invention to provide a guard for the disk which prevents the straw from coming in contact therewith and thereby insures the successful operation of the knotter mechanism and causes all of; the bundles to be bound by the machine before they are discharged.
In the form of my invention here shown, the guard 6 comprises a body of sheet or plate metal or the like, provided with an oblong rectangular opening 7 for the escape of bits of twine and other material therewith, and provided at the rear side with a flange or wall 9 which closely approaches the under side of the breast plate. The guard is provided with upturned and outwardly extended ends 10 to bear directly against the under side of the breast plate and provided with openings for the reception or" the bolts 11, wherewith the guard is secured to the breast plate. The guard is arranged directly under the disk and serves to prevent the straw in the bundle from coming in contact with the disk and being caught and wound around the stem of the disk and hence interfering with or preventing the operation of the knotter mechanism. The opening in the guard permits the bits of twine which drop from the knotter mechanism to pass therethrough.
W'hile T have herein shown and described my disk guard as arranged in operative relation to the disk of a Deering grain binding machine, I would have it understood that my guard may be used in connection with other grain binding mechanisms as well,
I would also have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, and construction of the disk guard, without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a binding and knotting mechanism, in combination with a disk and a breast plate having an opening sufiiciently large to clear the disk and through which opening the disk extends below the breast plate, a stationary guard secured to the under side of the breast plat-e, arranged under and across the opening thereof and also under the disk to prevent straw from coming in contact with the disk.
2. In a binding and knotting mechanism, in combination with a disk and a breast plate having an opening sufficiently large to clear the disk and through which opening the disk extends below the breast plate, -.a stationary guard secured to the under side of the breast plate, arranged under and across the opening thereof and also under the disk to prevent straw from coming in contact with the disk, the said guard having an opening directly below the disk for the passage of bits of twine and the like there through.
3. In a binding and knotting mechanism, in combination with a disk and a breast plate havin an opening sufliciently large to clear' the dis and through which opening the disk extends below the breast plate, a stationary guard secured to the under side of the breast .pila'te, arranged under and across the opening thereof and also under the disk to prevent straw from coming in contact 2Q with the disk, the guard being also provided on the rear side with a flange which closely approaches the under side of the breast plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 25 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
