TUBULAR CHINE-CLOCK.
Application led August 30, 1916.
Be it known that I, JAMns R. PUTNAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at ll'aterbury, in the county ot New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful improvement in Tubular I hnue-Clocksg and 1 do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying' drawings and the characters oi reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a view in elevation ot' tubular chimes mounted in accordance with my invention and shown as located. back ot aA timemoveinent in a clock-case the greater portion ou" which is broken away.
Fig. 2 a. view in vertical section on the line Q-2 of Fig. 1.
TWig. 3 a detached perspective view of the chin` bridge.
Jig. 4 an end view ot the chime-bridge on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 5 a detached perspective view ot the hour-strike bridge.
My invention relates to an improvement in tubular chime clocks, the object being to augment the sound of the tubes and improve its sonority and quality.
'illith these ends in view my invent-ion con.' ts in tubular chime clock having certain details of construction and combinations ot parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
1n carrying out my invention as herein shown, a series of tubes 3 are formed at their upper ends with transverse perforations e* for the reception ot cords 5 by means of which they are individually suspended trom a horizontal suspension-bar 6 notched as at 7 tor the reception of the said cords, and fastened at its respective ends to the upper ends et two brackets 8 the upper ends of which are secured to a sounding-board 9 constitutingthe back of the clock case 10 and at their lower ends to supports 11 carrying spacing-blocks 19 supporting a seatboard 13 upon which the time-movement 14 is fastened. The said time-movement may be of any approved construction and is provided with a series of hammers 15 arranged in front of the respective tubes 3.
To augment the sound of the tubes 3 and Speccaton of Letters Patent.

increase their sonority and the quality olf their tone, l employ a horizontally arranged chime-bridge 23 secured by its rear edge to the sounding-board 9 and having its rounded forward edge engaged by the suspensioncordsl 5 at a point between the upper ends oit the tubes 3 and the suspension-bar 6. VEhe said chime-bridge Q3 should be of sutiicient width to place the cords 5 under tension a component of which will be exerted in pushing` the bridge rearwardly against the sounding-board 9 which, under this arrangement, augments the sound or' the tubes which are increased in sonority and quality of toneprodu-ction. Y
fis shown, the hour-strike tube 1.6 is perforated at its upper end as at 17 for the reception of a suspension-cord 1S by means ot which the tube is suspended from a bracket 19 secured to the side of the clockease 10. For t'ansmitting the sound or' the tube 16, to the sounding-board 9, I employ an hour-strike bridge Q0 horizontally arranged and having its rear edge secured to the sounding-board 9. rThe edge of this bridge is formed with inclined slots 21 for the reception of the suspension-cord 1 8 which is suiliciently deflected in the forward direction to cause a portion of its tension to torce the bridge 20 against the soundingboard 9, whereby the sound ofv the hour strike tube 15 is also augmented and improved. A hammer 22 operated from the time-movement let is provided for the hourvstrike tube 16.
@t course in carrying out my invention, the detailed construction and arrangement or' parts may be varied from what is herein shown, my invention being characterized by the employment of a sounding-board and bridges tor augmenting the sound of tubular 'himes I claim in a tubular chime clock, the combination with a tube suspended by a cord, of a sounding-board, a chime-bridge interposed between the said sounding-board and cord in such manner as to place the cord under tension in the direction of the sounding-board against which the said chime-bridge is thus pressed by the weight ot' the tube, and a hammer for striking the tube.
