MOUTHPIECE FOR TELEPHONES AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FlLED APRYS. 1916 1,225,463. latentM Mz1y8,-1917.
lvil'ncmm W yaw UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JEROME '1'. IOGON'IGAL, OF POTTERSDALE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO M. T. IBOWMAN, OF CLEABFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 191 '7.
Application filed April 5, 1916. Serial No. 89,102.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JEROME T. MoGoNr GAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottersdale, in the county of Glearfield, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Mouthpiece for Telephones and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 'of the invention, such as will enable others and efficient features of construction.
One of the features of construction is the provision of a mouth piece guard constructed from the circular or disk-shaped piece of paper or the like having a central opening and being slitted radially from said opening toward and to the edge thereof, whereby the circular piece of paper may be turned upon itself and overlapped to form a. cone-shaped mouth piece guard for insertion telescopically into the mouth piece, there being suitable clips or projections on the edge of the mouth piece to hold the guard in position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a suitable holder to be disposed adjacent the telephone or adjacent the mouth piece thereof, in order to contain a plurality of such circular pieces of paper, each one of which is designed to be shaped as aforesaid, every time the telephone is used, thereby insuring sanitation. If desired, each of the guards may be dipped in a suitable antiseptlc solution, to provide an antiseptic veneer onthe guard, thereby further insuring sanitation.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a v1ew in perspective of a telephone mouth piece, showing the mouth guard as applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the same.
Fig. 3 is a ,detail perspective View of the mouth guard.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the disk or circular piece of paper for forming the mouth guard.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the holder or receptacle for holding a plurality of paper disks to be used as a guard.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the usual form of mouth piece of a telephone, phonograph, speaking tubes or the like, the outer edge portion of which is provided with a pair of arms or lugs 2, which overlie the outer edge of the mouth piece. Referring to Fig. 4, it is to be seen that the mouth guard 3 (which is shown in Figs. 2 and 3) is constructed from a circular piece of paper 4 having a central aperture 5 and a slit 6, which extends radially from the aperture 5 to the edge of the circular or disk-shaped piece of paper. Shown in Fig. 6 is a receptacle, box, or holder 7, which is designed to be filled with as many circular pieces of paper as possible, such as that shown in Fig. 4, so that when the holder or receptacle is secured by screws or other suitable means 8 adjacent the telephone, the users of the telephone may withdraw said pieces of paper and form their respective guards, and insert them telescopically in the mouth iece. Each user of the telephone when finished making a call removes the guard and destroys the same. The next user forms a new ard and inserts the same. If desired, each circular piece of paper may be dipped in a suitable antiseptic solution, in order to provide an antiseptic veneer, and thereby insure sanitation. To form the guard, the circular paper is turned or rolled on itself as shown in Fig. 3, so that the parts where the slit 6 is formed will overlap, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, after which the cone-shaped guard is inserted in the mouth piece as shown in Fig. 2, so that the lugs or ears 2 will overlie the outer edge portion of the guard, thereby holding the same in position.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is: n
An antiseptic guard to be selected from a multiple thereof, for temporary use in a difi'erent sized pieces, and to spring outwardly adjacent the inner surface of the mouth piece, whereby the outer edge of the 15 guard will spring into engagement with said lug to hold the guard in place.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
