Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8. 191% To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T PAUL F. Wrnnmrrs, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pothead-Connectors, of which the following is a full, clear, conelse, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to pot-head connectors and has for its object the provision of an improved device of this character, whose constructional features are such as to render the assembly thereof a simple matter and which likewise has other constructional features tending to produce a more efficient and satisfactory device. The various features of construction will be more clearly understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the features thereof in which Figure 1 is an improved pot-head constructed in accordance with my invention.

Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the adapter for simplifying the insertion of the cable to the pot head.

Fig. 7 is a modified form of construction, and Fig. 8 is a top view of'the construction illustrated in Fig. 7.
It is a prime object of my invention to provide a pot-head which has a removable cover carrying the outlet means, which outlet means are arranged symmetrically about the central axis of said cover, and which outlet means at the same time are flaring or outwardly diverging as they leave the cover.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, I show my improved pot-head as consisting of a body portion 1 which I am calllng a bowl and which is provided with a removable cover 2, a cable 3 is designed to .enter the bowl which cable may in certain form be inclosed by an iron pipe 4 and may thenenter through the interposition of reducing means, such as the adapter 5.
In the illustration shown in Figs. 1 and 2 there are four conductors 6, whichare separated after they enter the bowl of the pothead and are then designed to pass therethrough and through outlets provided therefor, which outlets are of a diverging character after leaving the cover, and which outlets are arranged symmetrically with respect to the central axis of the said cover.
The bowl 1 has ears 7, 7 which are used to mount said bowl in place. The adapter 5 which is interposed between the cable and the bowl may be of any suitable construction, such for instance as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, Fig. 4 being for an elongated cable having two conductors therein, as shown by the central aperture 8. The adapter 5 has a shoulder 9 so that it can be readily associated with the lower opening in the bowl 1. The cable is designed to fit rather snugly into the adapter and thus the same pot-head may be used to accommodate difi'erent sizes of cables.
The gasket 10 is interposed between the cover and the bowl and adjustable bolts 11 cooperating with ears 12 are provided to establish a watertight 'joint between thecover and the bowl. Flaring outlet bushings 13 of insulating material are provided as shown, which in the preferred construction enter through nipples 14 provided in the cover, which nipples have an inner annular groove corresponding to an outer annular groove provided correspondingly in the outlets 13.
These two grooves and the space between them are filled by some suitable cementing compound 15 and in this manner the outlets 13 are secured in place on said cover. The manner of cementing these two pieces toether consists in inserting the insulating outlet bushing 13 into the nipple 14 and then placing a rubber band about the outlet to cover the opening between same and the nipple 14, and then pouring in the cement compound and allowing same to set.
The outlets 13 are provided at their inner openings with a rounded mouth 16. The conductor 6 after being separated from its companion conductors as shown in the illus-' tration is fastened by -being soldered or I that the individual insulation of the conductor 6 of course must be removed where it enters the opening 18. The member'l7 has a second opening 19 whose purpose will ap-' pear shortly. In assembling the device, the
cable'is brought in through the adapter, if the use of one is found necessary, and .the conductors are spread as shown. Compound 20 is then poured in up to a short distance from the top of the bowl, leaving of course, enough space to accommodate outlets 13, and thereafter the member 17 is fastened to the conductor 6 whereupon the cover 2 with the outlets 13in place is mounted on top of the bowl 1, the conductors 6 and their associated members 17 passing through the saidoutlets.
The members 17 are then screwed in place within the outlets 13 by means of screws 21, then the bolts 11 are screwed up tight and thereafter compound is poured in through the outlets 13 which entirely incloses all of the parts with said insulating compound. The outgoing line conductor 22 which is designed to connect with the conductor 6 is fastened in a sleeve 23, which sleeve hasa screw threaded extension 24;, which extension 24 is screwed into a forked member 25 whose prongs are adapted for insertion within the opening 19, and which prongs are large enough that their spring action insures good contact.
The member 25 and the member 23 are secured in place upon the insulating cap 26 by having the two parts mounted to engage the shoulder 27 provided for this purpose. These members when screwed together are then held in place.
The conductor 22 has its bare end soldered within the opening of the sleeve 23 as is shown. The lnsulating cap, 26 has a plural-' ity of insulating petticoats 28 although these need not always be used as illustrated more clearly in Fig. 7 where a small type of insulator for indoor :use can be provided without departing from the spirit of my invention. The small and the large parts are made interchan cable so that one or the other can be used as desired. The insulating cap 26 has at one of its extremities a nipple 29 which is designed .to provide means to hold in place insulating tape 30 which is wrapped around said nipple and the protruding conductor 22. The space within the insulating cap 26 may then also be filled with compound. It will be seen that the insulating cap 26 with its pronged extension '25 is removable from outlet 13 as desired.

In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown the same pot-head arrangement with but two outlets symmetricallyarranged however and diverging from the removable cover 2 in which they are mounted.
Figs. 7 and 8 illustrate a pot-head with three protruding conductors similarly arranged. The various parts are interchangeable to facilitate assembling. q
While I have-herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement as herein set forth, but having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class specified comprising in combination a bowl having its top provided with an annular upstanding wall or collar, an insulator having a groove arranged within said annular collar said insulator forming an outlet for the bowl,
cementing material in said groove to hold said insulator in place, and a screw or" screws extending through said annular wall forming said rim and engaging said insulator.
2. A device of the class specified comprising in combination a casing, an'insulator extending through the wall of said casing and forming an outlet from the same, and
means for detachably securing said in-' sulator in place within said casing, said insulator being provided with interiorly arranged connecting devices and being made in separate parts to permit access to said connecting devices.
3. A device of the class specified, comprising a bowl having an outlet formed by an insulatin tube, connecting devices within said insulator, means for holding said connecting devices detachably in position within sald insulator, said means extending through the. insulator, and aninsulating cap arranged to be fitted over the outer end of said insulator and cover said securing means.
4. A device of the class specified, comprising a bowl having an outlet formed of an insulating tube, said bowl having upstanding annular walls forming an annular rim through which said insulator is extended, screws passing through said annular rim and engaging said insulator, connecting devices within said insulator, screws extending through said insulator and engaging said connecting devices, and a cap fitting
