To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANinnS'rooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarence, in the county of Cedar and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk-Sharpening Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to disk sharpening machines and more particularly to a machine especially adapted for sharpening the disks of disk barrows and similar implements.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a machine of the character stated, of simple construction and operation having means for movably supporting a section of a disk harrow.
A further object is to provide a machinev havlng a sharpening or abrading element,
which can be adjusted so as to bring. it into contact with the disks to be sharpened.
A still further object is to provide a machine having means for rotating the sharp-.
ening element and for simultaneously rotating the sections of the harrow to be sharpened.
Further objects will appear from the detail description.

The main frame of the machine consists,
of the sidebeams 1 secured on the transverse brace beams 2. are secured alined standards 3 secured in vertical position by the diagonal braces 4.

These standards support a transverse main drive shaft 5 near one end of which is keyeda drive pulley 6, which is connected by a belt 7 to amain drive pulley (not shown), so as to be rotated thereby. At one end of the shaft 5 is keyed a pulley 8. This pulley is connected by a short belt-9 to a small pulley 1O keyed on the outer end of a counter shaft 11, which counter shaft is rotatably mounted in a sleeve 12 carried at the outer end of an arm 13 which is pivotally mounted at its inner end on the drive shaft Near one end of this frame.
5. A disk 14 of emery or other suitable abrasive material is secured on the inner end of the counter shaft 11. An adjusting rod 15 has its lower end pivotally secured to the sleeve 12 and is passed through a slot at the inner end of a bracket arm 16 secured to and projecting from a transverse brace bar 17 secured between the standards 3. A crank 18 is provided with an internally threaded eye 19 which is threaded onto the externally threaded portion 20 of the adjusting rod 15. By rotating this crank the arm 13 will be adjusted about its pivotal axis so as to adjust the abrading disk 14 vertically. By this means the sharpening element is rotated from the main drive shaft 5 and may be simultaneously adjusted vertically due to the fact that its pivotal axis coincides with the axis of rotation of the drive shaft.
On the other end of the shaft 5 is secured a worm 21. This worm meshes with a worm wheel 22 keyed on the upper end of a transmission shaft 23 which extends longitudinally of the frame. The upper end of this shaft is rotatably mounted in a bracket 2 secured to the standard 3 and its lower end is connected by a universal or knuckle joint 25 to the inner end of a stub shaft 26 rotatably mounted in a standard 27 secured to one of the side bars 1. On the outer end of the stub shaft is keyed a sprocket wheel 28 which is connected by a chain 29 to a sprocket 30. The sprocket 30 is provided with a central polygonal aperture which slidably receives a shaft 31 of polygonal cross section which projects longitudinally of the frame at the transverse center thereof. This shaft is mounted through a sleeve 32 rotatable in an upright 33 secured at the center of the frame. This sleeve is provided with a polygonal bore which snugly receives the shaft so as to permit rotation of the same in the standard 33. As the sprocket 30 is mounted outside of the standard, the shaft 31 is free to move through the same without interfering with the driving connections be tween this sprocket and the sprocket 28.
On the frame of the machine, I mount a movable carriage adapted to support a section of a disk harrow. This carriage comprises a rectangular platform 34, beneath which, near each end, is secured a transverse shaft 35. This shaft is provided at each end with a flanged Wheel 36, which is adapted to be seated upon the upper face of the side bar 1 of the main frame with its flange in engagement with the inner face of the bar. By this arrangement the carriage is free to roll on the wheels longitiildinally of the main frame, the side bars of the main frame constituting tracks upon which the wheels travel. The platform 3% is provided with a plurality of posts or uprights 37. These uprights have their upper ends concaved to receive the shaft of a section of a disk harrow so as to retain the same and yet permit rotation of the harrow section.
For the purpose of rotating the harrow section, the shaft 31 is provided at its inner end with oppositely disposed fingers or prongs These prongs are adapted to be secured to the end of the harrow section shaft, so that the rotation of the shaft 31 will be imparted thereto.
The carriage is provided along one side, with a plurality of laterally projecting pins 39. These pins are adapted to be engaged by a notch in the lower end of an arcuate arm 10, which is pivotally connected at its upper end to a hand-lever 4E1 pivotally mounted on one of the side braces of the main frame. This arm is also connected intermediate its ends to the lower end of a spring-pressed rod 42 mounted on the handlever and controlled by a latch lever 13 and a rod 44 in the same manner as the ordinary spring-pressed latch or detent. It will be seen from. Fig. 1 of the drawings that when the arm 40 is in engagement with one of the pins 39, the carriage may be easily adjusted in either direction longitudinally of the main frame by means of the hand-lever ll.
When the machine is in operation, the abrading disk 1e will be rotated at a relatively high speed from the drive shaft 5, and the shaft 31 will be simultaneously rotated by means of the transmission shaft 23 and the sprockets 2S and If a section of a disk harrow 1s mounted in the posts 37 and is operatively connected to the shaft 31, it will be obvious that the same will be rotated, so as to rotate the disks carried thereby. By shifting the hand-lever 41, the carriage may be moved forward so as to bring the first disk of the harrow section into proper position beneath the abrading disk 14. The counter shaft 11 may now beadjusted by means of the adjusting rod 15 and crank 18 so as to bring the emery stone 1 1 into cutting engagement with the peripheral portion of the first disk of the harrow section. The stone 1 1 will act, by abrasion, to sharpen the disk and, simultaneously with the disk sharpening or abrading operation of the stone, the disk will be rotated by means of the shaft 31 so as to be uniformly sharpened throughout its entire periphery. IVhen one disk has been sharpened, the stone 14 may be raised into inoperative position and the carriage moved up so as to bring the next disk in the proper position to be operated on by the stone 14:. This operation may be continued until the entire harrow section has been sharpened, after which it may be removed from the carriage and a second section substituted therefor.
The longitudinally extending shaft 31 is provided with a collar a5, adjustably secured thereon by a binding screw 46. This collar serves to prevent withdrawal of the shaft beyond a predetermined point and by properly adjusting it longitudinally of the shaft, it may be used as a gage to determine at what point longitudinally of the carriage to start the sharpening operation.
It will be evident that certain changes can be made in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of my invention, without departing from the field and scope of the same, and I intend to include all such variations, as fall within the scope of the appended claims, in this application in which a preferred form only of my invention is disclosed.
What I claim is:
1. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a main frame, a drive shaft rotatably mounted thereon, a pivotally mounted counter shaft mounted for movement in the path concentric with the drive shaft, driving connections between the counter shaft and drive shaft, and means for securing the counter shaft in adjustment about the drive shaft.
2. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, alined standards secured thereto near one end thereof, a main drive shaft rotatably mounted in the standards, an arm pivotally mounted at its inner end on the drive shaft, a counter shaft rotatably mounted in the outer end of the arm parallel with the drive shaft, driving connections between the drive shaft and counter shaft, a bracket arm mounted above the drive shaft, an adjusting rod projecting through said bracket arm and loosely connected at its lower end to the outer end of the arm carrying the counter shaft, and means for adjusting the said rod through the bracket arm.
3. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, a drive shaft, an arm pivotally mounted on the drive shaft at lts inner end, a counter shaft rotatably mounted in the outer end of the arm, driving connections between the drive shaft and counter shaft, means for adjusting the arm about its pivotal axis, a shaft rotatably mounted near the end of the frame remote from the drive shaft and projecting longitudinally of the frame, and driving connectrons between the drive shaft and the said longitudinally projecting shaft for rotating the latter.
4. In a machine of the character described,
the combination of a frame, a drive shaft, an arm pivotally mounted on the drive shaft at its inner-end, a counter shaft rotatably mounted in the outer end of the arm, driving connections between the drive shaft and counter shaft, means for adjusting the arm about its pivotal axis, a shaft rotatably mounted near the end of the frame remote from the drive shaft and projecting longitudinally of the frame, and connections between the main drive shaft, the counter shaft, and the said longitudinally projecting shaft.
In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, a drive "shaft rotatably mounted thereon, an arm pivotally connected at one end on the drive shaft, a counter shaft rotatably mounted in the other end of the arm, driving connections between the drive shaft and the counter shaft, means for adjusting the arm about its pivotal axis, a shaft of polygonal cross section rotatably mounted at the end of the frame remote from the drive shaft and projecting longitudinally thereof, a sprocket wheel slidably mounted thereon, a stub shaft rotatably mounted parallel with the said longitudinal shaft, a transmission shaft universally connected to the stub shaft, a Worm Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the wheel keyed thereon, a worm secured on the main drive shaft and in mesh therewith, a sprocket Wheel keyed on the outer end of the stub shaft, and driving connections between the sprocket wheel on the stub shaft and the sprocket wheel mounted on the longitudinally projecting polygonal shaft.
6. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, a drive shaft rotatably mounted therein, an arm pivotally mounted at its inner end on the said shaft, a counter shaft rotatably mounted in the outer end of the arm, driving connections between the drive shaft and the counter shaft, means for adjusting the counter shaft about its pivotal axis, a carriage mounted on the frame and movable longitudinally thereof, provided with means for rotatably supporting a section of a disk harrow, and means for rotating a section of a disk harrow mounted on the carriage from the main 5 drive shaft and simultaneously with the rotation thereof.
