To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t knownthat I, JOHN E. KNOUFF, a
citizen of the United States, residing at VVilmot, in the county of Noble and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grindstone Attachments; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a grindstone attachment and has for its primary object to provide an emery stone lmounted on the grindstone frame and operatively connected to the grindstone, whereby upon driving or rotating the grindstone, the emery wheel will be driven to sharpen tools after they have been ground upon the grindstone.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means whereby the emery wheel may be swung rearwardly upon the grindstone frame, so that tools may be ground upon the grindstone.
A further object of this invention is to provide a pair of V-shaped supports being hinged at one end to the grindstone frame and detachably secured to the frame at their other ends for rotatably supporting the emery wheel, whereby the V-shaped supports may be swung rearwardly carrying the emery wheel away from adjacent the grindstone or in an inoperative position.
A further object'of this invention is to provide a novel form of hearings on one of the V-shaped supports, whereby the transverse shaft which carries the emery wheel is journaled, providing adjusting means so that the V-shaped supports may be applied to grindstone frames of various widths without the necessity of changing the transverse shaft. 1
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a grindstone attachment of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efiicient, and which be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certainnovel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a grind stone attachment, constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is an end View, illustrating the means of detachably securing the ends of the V-shaped supports to the frame of the grindstone, and
Fig. 8 is a top plan view partly in section, illustrating the novel form of bearings for allowing adjustment of the V-shaped supports. I
Referring in. detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a portion of a grindstone frame, having bearings 2 mounted thereon for journaling a grindstone 3, providing a well known construction of grindstone and to which my invention is applied.
Secured to the frame 1 and upon one side of the bearings 2 are substantially L-shaped brackets A which are provided with one of their arm portions twisted as illustrated at 5 and apertured to receive bolts 6. A pair of V-sl1aped supports 7 are provided with one of their ends twisted as illustrated at 9 and apertured to receive the bolts 6 for hingedly securing the V-shaped supports 7 to the grindstone frame 1. Secured to the grindstone frame 1 and to one side of the bearings 2 are substantially L-shaped brackets 10 which have plates 11 bolted or otherwise secured to the free arm portions there of. The plates 11 carry bolts 12 which have wing nuts 13 mounted thereon. The ends of the V-shaped supports opposite to the ends which are hinged to the brackets 4: are pro vided with slots 14 opening out through the ends thereof for receiving the bolts 12 between the wing nuts 13 and the plates 11, whereby upon tightening or screwing upon the wing nuts 13 on the bolts 12, the V- shaped supports will be securedv to the plates 11.
A suitable bearing 15 is formed upon the apex portion of one of the V-shaped supports 7 and has jou'rnaled therein a trans verse shaft 16 which has an emery wheel 17 secured to one end thereof and is provided with its opposite end squared as illustrated at 18. The other V-shaped support 7 has a bearing 19 secured to the apex portion thereof and has journaled therein a boxing 20 which is provided with a squared bore to receive the squared end 18 of the transverse shaft 16. This construction provides means whereby the transverse shaft 16 may move laterally and which will be allowed to rotate freely within the bearings 19 and 15. A pulley wheel 21 is secured to the transverse shaft 16 by a suitable set screw 22 whereby the pulley may be adjusted laterally upon the transverse shaft 16 to alfne same with the grindstone 3. An endless belt 23 passes over the pulley 21 and around the grindstone 3, whereby upon rotating the grindstone, a similar rotation will be transmitted to the pulley 22, thus rotating the emery wheel 17.
A. suitable arm 24L is secured to one of the V-shaped supports 7 and is provided with an elongated slot 25 in. its opposite end to re ceive a bolt 26 carried by the other Vshaped support, providing a construction which will brace the V-shaped support 7 and whereby the V-shaped supports 7 may be adjusted away from each other to apply them to grindstones of various widths.
A substantially L-shaped arm 27 is secured to the bearing 15 and extends horizontally therefrom having one of its arm portions extending transversely of the emery wheel 17 to provide a tool support. A downwardly depending arm 28 is formed on the L-shaped arm 27 and has a brace 29 adjustably secured thereto by a bolt 30 which is in turn riveted or otherwise secured to one of the V-shaped supports 7 as illustrated at 31.
A substantially L-shaped belt guide 32 is bolted or otherwise secured to the bearing 19 and provided with a pair of downwardly depending arms 33 which receive the belt 23 and guide the same over the pulley 21.
In operation, after a tool has been ground efficiently upon the grindstone 3, the V- shaped supports 7 are swung over the grindstone and secured to the plates 11 and the belt 23 is placed upon the grindstone 3 and by rotating said grindstone, the emery wheel 17 will be driven. Thereby a sharp edge may be placed upon the tool. When desiring to use the grindstone without the emery wheel, the \l-shaped supports 7 are detached from the plates 11 and swung rearwardly upon the frame 1 whereby free use of the grindstone 3 may be had.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood thatminor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with a grindstone frame having a grindstone journaled there on, of a pair of if-shaped supports hingedly and detachably secured to the frame, a
transverse shaft journaled to said supports, an emery wheel secured to the shaft, and means connected with the shaft and with the grindstone for rotating the emery wheel.
2. In combination with a grinds'tone frame having a grindstone journaled thereon, of a pair of substantially L-shaped brackets secured to the frame, a pair of V- shaped supports hingedly secured to said brackets, means for detachably securing the V-shaped supports to the frame, a transverse shaft journaled to said supports, an emery wheel secured to said shaft, and means connecting the shaft to the grindstone for rotating the emery wheel upon rotation of the grindstone.

In combination with a grindstone frame having a grindstone journaled thereon, of a pair of substantially L-shaped brackets secured to the frame, a pair of V- shaped supports hingedly secured to the brackets, a pair of L-shaped brackets secured to the frame, plates secured to the L-shaped brackets, means for securing the free ends of the supports to the plates, a transverse shaft journaled to said supports, an emery wheel secured to the shaft, and means for operatively connecting the transverse shaft with the grindstone for rotating the emery wheel upon rotation of the grindstone.

In combination with a grindstone frame having a grindstone journaled thereon, of a pair of V-shaped supports hingedly secured to the frame, a pair of L-shaped brackets secured to the frame, plates secured to the L-shaped brackets, bolts carried by said plates, wing nuts upon said bolts, said supports provided with their free ends slotted to receive the bolts for detachably securing the free ends of the supports to the plates, a transverse shaft journaled to said supports, an emery wheel secured to the shaft, and means for operatively connecting the transverse shaft to the grindstone for rotating the emery wheel.
5. In combination with a grindstone frame having a grindstone journaled thereon, of a pair of V-shaped supports hingedly and detachably secured to the frame, bearings secured to the apex portions of the supports, a transverse shaft journaled in said bearings, an emery wheel secured to the shaft, and means for operatively connecting the transverse shaft with the grindstone for rotating the emery wheel.
6. In combination with a grindstone frame having a grindstone journaled thereon, of a pair of V-shaped supports hingedly and detachably secured to the frame, a bearing formed on one of the V-shaped supports, a transverse shaft journaled in said bearing and provided with one of its ends squared, an emery wheel secured to the other end of the shaft, a bearing formed on the other support, a boxing journaled in said last mentioned bearing and provided With a squared opening to slidably receive the squared ends of the transverse shaft, and means for operatively connecting the trans verse shaft With the grindstonefor rotating the emery Wheel.
7. In combination With a grindstone frame having a grindstone journaled thereon, of a pair of Vshaped supports hingedly and de'tachably secured to the frame, means for adjustably securing the supports together, a shaft journaled to said supports, an emery Wheel carried by said shaft, a

belt surrounding the pulley and the grindstone, for rotating the emery wheel, and a belt guide secured to one of the supports and in engagement With the belt to guide said belt over the pulley.
