To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. MGIN- 'rosn, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Plankinton, in the county of Aurora and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toys and more particularly to the aeronautical class.
The primary object of my invention resides in the provision of a toy plane suspended from a supporting cable or wire having means associated therewith for operating the toy to cause the latter to automatically move along. the wire and have an appearance of flying during its forward movement, by means of a propeller and rudder associated with the plane.
Another object of my invention resides in the provision of a novel operating means embodying preferably a spring motor, drum and cable or wire, the latter being associated with a rigid object and arranged so that when the spring is actuated the wire will be wound about the drum consequently imparting a movement of the plane toward the object to which the cable or line is secured.
A still further object of my invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described that is simple 1n construction, eflicient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
' Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
' In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my invention one side-of the planes being broken away so as to clearly illustrate the arrangement of the propeller shaft and main shaft;

Fig. 4: is an end elevational view looking toward the winding drum illustrating to advantage the ratchet teeth formed on one end thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, I provide a metal frame for connecting the upper plane 1 to the lower plane 2. In this instance it 1s preferable that the upper plane be wider and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the lower plane is connected to the upper plane substantially intermediate the ends of the latter through the medium of vertical rods 3, the extended ends of the upper plane being braced through the medium of cross braces-41 The planes have also associated with their front and rear edges at points substantially intermediate their ends vertical supporting rods 5 and 6. Said rods 5 and 6 have an elongated bar 7 extending from one to the other and thence rearwardly from the lower plane. A rudder 8 is carried by the end of the bar 7 and is further supported through the means of a brace 9. The plane is now mounted on a supporting cable 10, which cable is incidentally connected at one end to a post 11, the opposite end of the cable being adapted for engagement with a post not shown. The mounting means for the plane in this instance. includes supporting brackets 12 secured to the upper surface of the upper plane. Between the arms of each of the brackets is mounted a roller 13.
In order to propel the plane along the cable 10 so that it will have the appearance of flying, I haveprovided; a U-shaped bracket 14 This 'backet comprises spaced parallel arms, one of which is arranged in juxtaposed relation with the rod 6, the intermediate portion being in intimate contact with the lower plane as clearly illustrated to advantage in the accompanying drawings.
Rotatably mounted adjacent the upper ends of the arms of the bracket 14 and also through the rod 6 is a shaft 15, the free extended end of which has a propeller 16 mounted thereon. Also carried by the shaft 15 between the arms'of the bracket 14 is a cog 17 arranged in mesh with a larger cog 18 rigidly carried. by the main shaft 19.

This casing encompasses a spiral spring 22, the respective ends of which are rigidly connected to the inner wall of the casing and the shaft. The operation of my invention is as follows:
Assuming the cable 27 is attached to a suitable post, not shown, which post also receives one end of the cable 10 and that the plane is arranged adjacent the post 11, the handle 20 of the shaft 19 is rotated to consequently wind the spring 22 within the casing 21. During this rotation the pawls 24 will not engage the ratchet teeth. After the device has been wound, the handle 20 is released whereby the spring will exert its tension on the shaft and consequently rotate the shaft. Because of the fact that the side 23 is rigid with the shaft, the pawls 24 will, on movement of the shaft after the spring has been wound, engage the teeth 25 of the ratchet formed on the loosely mounted drum 26 and cause the drum to rotate with the shaft. As the drum is rotated the cable 27 will be wound thereabout, which movement will incidentally cause the rollers 13 to travel forwardly over the cable 10. Also the rotation of the shaft 19, imparts a rotary motion to the shaft 15 through the medium of the gears 17 and 18, this motion being consequently imparted to the propeller Tfl16 so as to give the device the appearance of 1n Al t hough I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I desire to be understood that I am not to be limited to the exact details shown, how ever,
stress is laid upon the arrangement of the 1 operating means of the toy as well as the means which gives the appearance of flying of its own accord.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it can easily be seen that I have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but. a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled'and when assembled can be placed upon the market and sold at a minimum cost.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanyin drawings comprehend only the preferre embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts 'may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my mvention. I
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a supporting cable, of a plane suspended therefrom, and spring actuating means on the plane including a winding drum and a cable for movir ig1 the plane forwardly over the cable.
2. e combination with a supporting cable, of a plane, means on the upper surface of the plane for engagement with the cable to suspend the plane therefrom, a draw line associated with the plane, and means for winding the draw line on the plane to consequently cause the plane to move forwardly over the cable.
3. The combination with a supporting cable, of a plane, means for suspending the plane from the cable, operating means on the plane for moving the plane forwardly along thd cable, and a propeller operably mounted on the lane for iving the plane the appearance 0 flying of 1ts own accord.
4. The combination with a supporting cable, of a plane, rollers mounted on the upper surface of the plane for association with the cable, a shaft rotatably mounted on the plane, a drum on the shaft, a draw line asso ciated with the drum, spring means associated with the drum, means for winding the spring without rotating the drum, said spring means when released causing the rotation of the drum to consequently cause the draw line to be wound thereabout and thus move the plane along the cable.
