FOLDING COOP AND CRIB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1'?, 1917.
Application led May 17, 1916. Serial No. 98,125.
Be it known that l, PETER H. COLT, a citi- -zen of the United States, residing at Wartoni frame' so as to support the same in lowered or raised position in order to convert the device into a crib or coop as desired. y
I am aware that l am not the first in the art to provide a folding coop and crib, but in prior devices it was necessary to raise the bottom upwardly from off of its lower sup ports andplace'the same in position. upon higher supports in order to convertrthe def vice when used as acoop into -a cribwhile` in in f improved construction,l the bottom is mounted upon a doublcra'nk which -can be swung into lowered or raised 'position Iso as to convert the device into a coop or crib.
.Other' and further objects and advantages of the 'invenon willbehereinafter, set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims. f
the drawings,
Figure 1 is.a perspective view of a portion of a folding coop and crib constructed in accbidance with my invention.'`
Fig. 2' isa longitudinal vertical section.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the combined coop and crib in folded position.
Fig.4 is a transverse vertical section showing .the bottom frame in lowered .position in order to convert the device into a.coop.
Fig. 5 is a similar section showing the bottom` frame in elevated position ih order to convert the device into a crib, and
Fig. 6 is a detail' transverse vertical sec.- tion showing the bottom frame inv vertical position. .J
Like numerals of reference ref er to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In carrying out my invention -1 employ a pair of side frames 1 and 2 preferably rectangular in shape covered with foraminated material as clearly shown, the side piece 1 l being provided with lateral extensions 3 at each end, to each of which is connected by hinges 4, an end section 5, which is connected to an end section 6, by hinges 7, said end section 6 being connected to the side frame- 2 by hinges 8, in order to allow the end sections 5 and 6 to fold inwardly to reduce the width of the device for the purpose hereinafter fully described. The sections 5 and '6 are formed of rectangular frames covered with foi'aminated material of the same nature as of the foraminated material on the frames l and 2, and these frames 1, 2, 4, and 5 are preferably formed of wood highly nished to give an ornamental appearance, but of course, the `same can be formed of any suitable metal without departing from the spirit of my -invention.
The extensions 3 are-provided with bearings9 in which are mounted the trunnions 10 of a double crank 11 on which is pivotally mounted a bottom frame 12 having lthe' usual :wire fabriccovering 13 for-supporting a mattress 15, said frame being pro. vided with eyes 16 for pivotally connecting fthe, double crank 11 4thereto in such a mam ner that the same isf free to swing thereon.v
The vframef12 is of such a size that itfits snugly between the'side and end frames of the device when in extended position as lshown in Ffgs. 1, 2, 4 and 5, so as to hold .the device in set-up position to form a crib or coop as ytlfie case may be. The double crank 11 when in lowered position normally assumes the pbsition as shown in Fig. 4, that is, the .crank portion'does not hang in .a vertical plane but obliquely, as shown in F.ig.4` so as to allowfthe bottom frame 12 to be swung upwardly rocking on the double crank asa pivot in oilder'to assume the po` sition shown in Figfwhen the device is in folded position. 'The bottom frame is supported by a cl when inl lowered position, and it will be seen that when the device is in the position shown in Figs. 1', 2, and 4, a coop is formed in which an infantcan be placed and retained without any danger of the infant injuring itself in any way.
AWhen it is desired to convert the device from a coop to a crib, the bottom frame is lifted upwardly by grasping the handle 18 and rocking the frame on the double crank as a pivot, and by drawing upwardly on the bottom frame the crank can be turned over,
the same traveling on the arc of a circle a-S' eat 17 carried by the frame 2,
...aan
lshown by dotted lines in Fig. 5, and the bottom frame 12 will be raised into the elevated position as shown inFig. 5.A
Secured to the bottom of the frame 12 at each end, is a tape 19 which is adapted to be placed over the top bar of the frame 2, and is provided with a button holefor engaging a button 20 secured to the frame 2, as shown in Fig. 5 for supporting the frame l2 when in raised position, said tape being folded on the frame under the mattress when the frame 12 is in lowered position as shown in Fig. 4. By this construction each end of the frame is supported by a canvas tape which can be folded under the mattress when the frame is in lowered position so that the supporting means for the frame when in lowe led position is out of the way and cannot possibly injure the infant within the coop.
In order to providev additional means for holding the end sections in alinement when the coop is in use, l. provide pivoted clips 22 which embrace the upper edges of the sections 5 and 6 as is' clearly shown in Figs. l,
4 and 5.
The end frames 6 carry blocks 22 having beveled faces adapted to be engaged by the bottom frame when the same is in lowered position so as to force the frames 5 and 6 outwardly into alinement so as to hold the .device in set-up position.
The side frames 1 and 2 are provided with hangers 23 carrying stub axles 24 on which are mounted wheels 25 in order to allow the device to be moved from place to place which practically forms a carriage which can be readily converted from a pen or ycoop into a crib. v
When the device is in the position as .shown in Figs. l, 2 and 4, and it is desired to fold the device so that the same willoccupy a small space, the handle.18 of the bottom frame 12 is grasped and lifted upwardly, the bottom swinging onthe double crank 11 as a pivot until the same assumes `the position shownin Figs. 3 and 6, the mattress and frame being substantially of the same width as the extensions 3 so as to allow the device to be folded as shown in Figs. 3 and 6, and when in this folded position, the crank will have a tendency to hold the bot tom frame and mattress in vertical position as shown in Fig. 6.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that ll' have provided a combined fold- Lesage? ing coop and crib mounted on wheels having a fabric bottom carried by a double crank, the trunnions of which are mounted in end extensions of one side frame in such a manner that the bottom frame 10 be raised and lowered in order to change the device from a coop to a crib and when in either position one side thereof will be supported by said double crank.
l claim;
1. A folding crib, comprising side pieces connected together by sectional end pieces, a double crank pivotally carried by one of said side pieces, a bottom frame pivotally mounted upon said crank, and means for supporting said bottom frame in different horizontal planes.
2. A crib having a double crank pivotally mounted within the walls thereof, a bottom pivotally mounted upon said. crank, and
means for supporting said bottom horizontally in different horizontal planes.
3. A folding crib, comprising side frames, one of said side frames being provided with lateral extensions, sectional end members connecting said extensions to the opposite side frame, said sectional end piecesi being capablev of being folded inwardly to draw the side frames together, bearings secured in said extensions, a double crank provided with. trunnions mounted in said bearings, a bottom frame provided with eyes to receive said crank, said bottom frame being capable of being swung into vertical position within the extensions, and means for supporting said bottom frame horizontally in different horizontal planes.
4. A folding crib and coop comprising Wheeledmside frames, one of said side frames being provided with lateral extensions, sectional end members connecting said extensions to the opposite side frame, a 'double crank pivotally mounted within said exten-- sions, a fabric covered frame pivotally mounted upon said double crank, a strip secured to one of the side frames for supporting said bottom .in lowered horizontal position, buttons carried by one of the side frames, and tapes carried by the bottom frame adapted toengage said buttons for holding the opposite side of said bottom l frame in raised horizontal position.
ln testimony whereof l hereunto affix my slgnature.
