DIMITRIOS PANTAZI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPRING-MOTOR.
Application led November 26, 1915, Serial No. 33,473.
To all whom t may concern: Be it known that I, Dnirrmos PANTAZI, a subject of the King of Greece, 'and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, havev invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Motors, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements in spring motors and particularly of the type adapted to be used in connection with fans and other contrivances requiring a small amount of power to operate.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a motor which will run for a greater length of time than is ordinary in constructions of this kind, the same occupying a relatively limited space in the base of the mechanism.
A second object is to provide means whereby the several springs may be wound simultaneously and with far less exertion than by the cranking methods usually employed.
These and other objects, which will become more fully manifest as the specification proceeds, are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a material part of the specification, and in which Figure 1 is a partial side elevation and sectional View showing an embodiment of the device, the section being taken substantially on line 1 1 of Fig. 2,' and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, the casing being shown in section to better disclose the interior.
In the adaptation shown a base 10 may be supported by a number of pedestals 11 having a wide foot 12, so that the apparatus may be secured upon any convenient surace.
Rising from the base are two pairs of brackets 14 in which are rotatably mounted shafts 15, at one end ofwhich and between the brackets are secured worm wheels 16 in such manner as to drive the shafts 15 when they are caused to rotate.
Motion is conveyed to the worm wheels 16 by means of the worms 17 rigid on the shaft 18 supported by brackets 19 transversely of the shafts 15, the shaft having one end extending beyond the casing and squared, as at 20, to receive the crank handle 21.
Mounted to rotate on the shafts 15 are two drums 25 in which are contained flat spiral coil springs 26, one end, as 27, beingl secured Within the drum while the other end 28 is fastened upon the periphery of a sleeve 29, the same being rigidly secured to the shaft 15, so that when the shaft is rotated the spring will be wound. In lorder to convey motion from the oppositely disposed drums a number ,of pins 30 are used, the same passing through a spur gear 31, loosely mounted upon the shaft 15.
It will be understood that each pair of drums are similarly mounted and have between them duplicate gears 31, both of which are adapted to mesh with the pinion 32 carried on the short shaft 33, supported by the frames 34 and 35, which are secured to the base as indicated.
The upper end of the frame side 35 extends vertically its entire length while the frame side 34 is bent, `as at 36, and then turned up to meet the connecting bar 37 at the top.
Engaged with the pinion 32 is a train of gears leading to the pinion 40 secured upon the shaft 4l, the extending end of which has rigidly mounted upon it the fan blades 42 as shown, the shaft revolving in lball bearings carried in the frame sides v35 and 36.
In the sides of the gear 40 are formed a number of openings 43 and adapted to engage with these openings are pins 44, carried by the detent 45, which is provided with a hub 46, slidable on the shaft 47 and constantly forced toward the gear by reason of the spiral push spring 48.
All the foregoing mechanism is contained Within a metallic casing 5() secured to the base at its bottom and arranged to neatly cover over all of the described mechanism, except the handle 21, the fan head and the releasing mechanism shown at the top of the casing.
This mechanism consists of a handle 52, the same being pivoted in suitable brackets 53 and provided with an angular lug 54 adapted to make contact against the shift ing detent 45 opposing the spring when in l a vertical position and capable of being turned, as indicated by the arrow in Fig.' 2, whereupon the pins 44 will engage with the gear and prevent further motion of the clock train.
In operation the crank 21 is turned whereby the springs are tensioned, and the starti ing lever 52 moved either up or down, so as lto use the fan, or to have it remain quiet.
sol
4two or more pairs of spring drunis, said druins being arranged in the saine horizontal plane one in advance of the other, shafts upon which each pair of drums is rotatably mounted,`worrn wheels upon each of Said shafts, ooil springs engaged interiorly of said drums atone end thereof and with said sliaftsat the other7 a shaft centrally between each group of spring drums, gears combined with said drums (zo-acting to drive the seeond mentioned shaft, a train of gears driven by said second shaft, a shaft rotatably lmounted transversely of said drum and gea shafts, worms on the last named shaft meshing with said worm wheels, Ineansl for inanually rotating the last named shaft, and means for positively holding or releasing said gear train;
In testimony whereof I have signed iny naine to this Specification.
