V Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 14, 1918. Serial mi 801,092.
. o all whom a may mam.-
Be 'it known that I, JOHN B. Pn'rnns, a
of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Brushes and Holders for Generators and Motors; and I dohereby declare the follow- "ing'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same, reference being had tojthe accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to electrical apparains and particularly to the construction of brushes-and holders for generators and motors.
The invention may be embodied in dif- :ferent forms of constructions. One form of invention, has been selected as an example mshcwhow such constructions may be made and oper ated and is described in this specification.
Figures 1 and.2 are views of a brush set involving my invention.
' The brushes 41 coiiperate with the commutator of a motor or generator to form the collector of the electric current produced by rotation of the armature within a field or to., connect the armature with an external cir- Icuit when driven by the current.
The brushes 41 are secured to U-shaped arms 42 by means of the nuts and bolts 43. The arms 42 are provided with lips or flanges 44 which extend downward behind the brushes 41. The ends of the U-shaped arms are supported on pins 45. The pins 45 are mounted ,on an insulating yoke-shaped block 46. A
coiled spring 47 is located between the ends of the U-shaped arms 42 and around the pins 45'. The U-shaped arms are provided with segmental crowns 48. One end of each spring Wire 49 is located between anytwo consecutive teeth of the crown 48 whereby the tension of the spring may be adjustably varied according to the location of the end of the spring. The ends 50 of the wires Patented Apr. 17,1917.
move with the :egmen-ts 48'. The brushes 41 are thus elastic t1 pressed against the com- I mutator 46. P 5r ect electricconnecti'ons are made with the lirushesby means of the fiexible wires 52, ha ving contact washersat their ends. The wir as 52 are secured to the arms 42 and to the: brushes 41 by means of" the bolts andnuts'43. Insulating tubes 58 are 0 located-around thepins 45and wires'55. I
What I claim as new, and desire to se-' cure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In combination -with a co or binding posts, ayoke of insulat iidg fiEhs rial secured to the ends of the binding posts, pins extending into the yoke, arms having toothed segments, springs interposed between the toothed segments and the pinsforc pressing the arms toward each otherflcar 70,
on block brush es:securedto the ends of the 3 arms, flexible c1 vnnectors for connecting the binding osts w iththe carbon block brushes.
2. In ombin ation with a commutator,
binding posts, a yoke of insulating material '76,
secured to'the el d5 of the binding posts, pins extending into the yoke, U-shaped arms piv- Qotally connected to the binding posts and signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
