Be it known that I, JOHN J. HnYs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sole-Pressing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to pressing machines for operating. upon soles before they have been incorporated in a boot or shoe and more particularly to gaging mechanisms employed in connection with machines of this type. r
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved form of mechanism for gaging the position of the sole laterally with relation to the pressing forms which may be conveniently adjusted to vary the position of the gage with relation to the form and which serves as ameans for determining the position of the sole longitudinally of the form.
With the above object in view the several features of the invention consist in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the advantages of which will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the following description.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form of the invention; Figure 1 represents a plan view partly in section of a portion of a sole pressing machine Fembodying the improved form of gaging device; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail illustrating upon an enlarged scale the method of supporting the gage device.
It is desirable that mechanisms of this type for gaging the position of the sole laterally of the pressing forms be conveniently adjusted by the operator to position the gage initially with relation to the forms and that the gage shall be removed from between the forms prior to movement of the forms into a pressing position. The present invention is embodied in a machine of the usual type such as that shown and described in the patent to Preble, No.

1,004,076, dated September 26, 1911 and comprises cooperating pressing forms which are relatively actuated to press the sole between them. In this type of machine the sole supporting form has a longitudinal movement to move the supporting form into alinement with the pressing form and a vertical movement to move the supporting form into what is known as a pressing position. According to the present invention the sole gage is normally supported adjacent to the surface of the supportingform and is removed from engagement with the sole during the horizontal movement of the supporting form into alinement with the press ing form. r
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the sole supporting form is indicated at 1 and is supported upon a table 4: which moves horizontally upon a crosshead 2 which is guided vertically upon standards 3 in the usual manner. The improved sole gage is indicated at 5 and is supported upon the free end of an arm 7 pivoted at its opposite end upon a bracket 8 secured to the table 4:. The arm 7, as shown clearly in Fig. 4: is adjustably secured in the head 9 formed upon the upper end of a rock shaft 10 journaled in the bracket 8 and having a collar 11 secured thereto to retain the rock shaft in position in the bracket. The gage member 5 is provided with a finger 12 which normally engages with a cam track 13 which is so shaped that the gage member is retained in operative position when the supporting form 2 is advanced in a position of presentation and is permitted to move to an inoperative position when the supporting form is retracted into alinement with the pressing form. In order to permanently maintain the gage member in contact with the cam a coiled spring 15 surrounds the rock shaft 10 and is connected at its opposite ends to the bracket 8 and collar 11, respectively. It
will be noted that with this construction the gage member is normally retained in an operative position with its'lower end in close proximity to the surface of the supporting form and upon a horizontal movement of the supporting form into alinement with the pressing form the gage member is moved transversely of the form into an inoperative position. In order to insure that the gage member shall be removed from between the forms prior to the movement of the forms 11o into pressing position and prevent breaking of the gage if the spring15 should fail to move the gage into inoperative position the gage member 5 is provided with an inclined face 16 which may be engaged by the pressing form to move the gage transversely during the upward movement of the supporting form into a position of pressure.
It is desirable that the initial position of the gage may be conveniently adjusted in order to accommodate soles of varying widths and that the operator may have some means of determining the position of the gage with relation to the forms. Furthermore, it is desirable that this adjusting mechanism shall be so constructed and arranged that the gage shall be locked in adjusted position automatically. To this end the cam 13 is secured upon a slide rod 18 which is supported in a bearing 19 secured to the crosshead 2 and the slide rod 18 is actuated to adjust the gage by a rotary adjusting disk 20 having a spiral groove 21 formed therein which receives a pin 22 projecting transversely from the slide rod 18. The adjusting dial is conveniently ournaled upon the bracket 19 by a stud 23 secured in the bracket and is provided with suitable indications upon its face which cooperate with a fixed pointer 24 secured to the bracket to indicate to the operator the lateral position of the gage. The pin 22 moves in a longitudinal slot 25 formed in the bracket 19 which serves to prevent the slide rod 18 from turning in the bearing and insures that the cam 13 shall be retained in a fixed position except when operated by the rotary adjusting member. With this construction it will be obvious that upon a rotation of the adjusting member a lengthwise movement of the slide rod will take place, the position of the cam member depending upon that portion of the spiral groove in which the pin 22 is positioned.
' It is desirable that the sole gage shall serve as a means for positioning the sole longitudinally with respect to the forms and to this end the gage member is arranged to indicate the proper position for the ball line of the sole. As shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings the gage member is provided with a series of ribs 27 which represent the proper position of the ball line for diiferent styles of soles. With this type of gage the operator knowing which rib corresponds to.
the particular style of sole being operated upon can readily position the sole longitudinally of the form by locating the sole with the termination of the ball line opposite the proper rib upon the gage.
While it is preferred to employ the specific construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, it will be understood that this construction and arrangement is not essential except so far as specified in the claims, and may be changed or modified without departing from the broader features of the invention.
The invention having been described, what is claimed is: V
1. A sole pressing machine, comprising a horizontally movable sole supporting form, a sole gage movable with the form, a stationary cam for controlling the position of the gage with relation to the form, and means for adjusting the position of the cam to control the position of thegage with relation to the form.
2. A sole pressing machine, comprising a sole supporting form, an arm pivoted at one end, a gage supported upon the free end of the arm in operative relation to the form, acam for controlling the position of the gage, and means normally tending to maintain the gage in engagement with the cam.
3. A sole pressing machine, comprising a sole supporting form, a gage supported in operative relation to the form, a cam for determining the position of the gage, a sliding shaft supporting the cam, and a rotary adjusting member conveniently accessible to the operator for actuating the sliding shaft.
4. A sole pressing machine, comprising a horizontally movable sole supporting form, a gage member supported in operative-relation to the form, a slide rod, a cam mounted upon the slide rod, a rotary adjusting member having a spiral slot formed therein, and a pin projecting from the slide rod and received in the spiral slot of the adjusting member.
5. A sole pressing machine, comprising a vertically.movable crosshead, a form supported upon the crosshead, a gage, a bracket secured to the crosshead, a slide rod supported in the bracket, a cam for controlling the position of the gage mounted upon the end of the slide rod, and means for moving the slide rod in a lengthwise direction.
6. A sole pressing machine, comprising a crosshead, a horizontally movable table on the crosshead, a form supported upon the table, an arm pivoted at one end upon the table, a sole gage mounted upon the opposite end of the arm, a cam mounted on the crosshead for determining the position of the gage, and means for normally maintaining the gage in operative relation with the cam to move the gage into and out of contact with the sole upon horizontal movements of the table.
