naeaaaa Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr, MD, 1931 '3'.
Application filed may 11, 1915. Serial No. 27,469.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JA ES A. ONEILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York,,have made a new and useful Invention inTwyer-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to underfeed stokers and more particularly blocks for underfeed stokers.
In inclined underfeed stokers having fuel retorts through which the fuel is fed, it is customary in certain types to use hollow blocks between adjacent retorts piled in overlapping relation so as to form fuel supporting and air supplying means between the retorts.
It has been found that it is advantageous to distribute the air for combustiongenerally supplied by a fan or blowerso that it is projected in small streams into the'retorts and toward the rear of the stoker and that more air should be discharged into the retorts than toward the rear of the stoker.
An object of thisinvention is to provide a twyer block for use in piled and overlapping relation with similar twyer blocks of such construction that the air discharged will uniformly decrease in amount from the retorts toward the rear of the stoker and that the air discharge openings through the twyer blocks will be of large number and each of relatively small area so that a uniform combustion will take place throughout the entire fuel bed.
These, as well as other objects, which will readily appear to those skilled in this art, I attain by means of the twyer block construction illustrated in the drawings accompanying this application and forming a part thereof, and throughout the several views of which like elements are denoted by like characters.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an edge view in perspective of a twyer block embodying this invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of sald block, and v Fig. 3 is a centr l longitudinal section of to so-called twyer The block consists of a plate 4 having sides 5 extending around the plate except at the rear 6 thereof, which is cut away as at 6. The plate is perforated as at 7 and is provided with a depending lock hook 8 adapted for insertion into the perforation 7' of the block next below it when used in piled and overlapping relation. Two depending ears or lugs 9 are provided for alining the blocks with relation to the retort sidewalls. Ihe air discharge edge of the block from the points 10l0 is corrugated, the corrugations decreasing in width and increasing in number from the points 10-10 to the longitudinal center 11 of the block. These corrugations provide air outlets from the interior of the block to the fuel bed and the air discharged will uniformly decrease in amount from the points 10-10 toward the longitudinal center of the block.
The corrugations in the upper face of the block serve more or less to collect ash and thereby to preserve the exposed portions of the block from burning ofi'.
Incidentally, this construction makes a light block and one with very little core work;
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. Atwyer block for underfeed stokers, comprising a hollow member, the under discharge edge of which is provided with air discharge channels and the upper edge of which above said channels is wrinkled or corrugated. j
2. A twyer block for underfeed stokers, comprising a hollow member provided with channels extending through the sidewalls thereof for discharging air and having its upper surface aboversaid channels formed with ridges and valleys.
3. Twyer blocks for underfeed stokers for forming with similar blocks fuel supporting and air supplying means for use between the stoker retorts, each twyer block comprising a hollow member provided with rear and forward channels extending through the sidewalls thereof and being adapted to discharge more air into the retorts than toward the rear of the stoker, and each block having its Mill "surface above said channels wrinkled or corthereof and having corrugations formed in.
rugated. each face thereof.
4;. A fuel supporting twyer block for un- In testimony whereof, I have hereunto derfeed stokers, comprising a flat member subscribed my name this sixth (6) day of 10 5 provided with a downwardly inclined flange May, 1915.
