FRANK MERAY, OF NEW YORK, n. Y.
SELF-LUBRICATIIVG PLANE.
Application filed June 30, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MnnAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Lubricating Planes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to planes, and more particularly to a cabinet makers plane. The primary object of this invention is to provide a plane of the ordinary construction, which has a plurality of horizontally disposed lubricator retaining cups or tanks supported within the plane structure, which lubricating cups have communication with the surface of the plane through a plurallty of ducts which are distributed over the surface of the plane for efiiciently oiling the surface being planed.
Another object of this invention is to provide a shaving guard for attachment to the front handle of the plane to prevent the shaving from striking the hand of the person using the plane.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved plane.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the plane showing parts of the same removed.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section through the frame.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the plane showing the improved shaving guard, and
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the plane.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the plane as an entirety, which has a bottom planing surface 2 which rides upon the wood which is being planed, and upstanding side rails 3 and 4. The bottom or planing surface of the plane is pro-- vided with a transversely extending slot 4 through which the plane blade 5 extends, as
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1d, 1917.
Serial No. 37,293.
is ordinary in the construction of planes of this nature.
The bottom 2 of the plane 1 is provided with sockets 5 and 6 formed therein. The socket 5 is formed forwardly of the slot 4, while the socket 6 is formed rearwardly thereof. The sockets 5 and 6 are substantially semi-circular in shape and have mounted therein oil retaining tanks 7 and 8, which are cylindrical in shape and extend transversely across the body of the plane. The tanks 7 and 8 are provided with screw caps 9, which are seated in openings formed in the tanks to permit of the filling of the same with oil.
The body 2 of the plane is provided with a plurality of ducts 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 formed therein. The ducts 10 extend forwardly from the socket 5, and at an angle to the planing surface of the plane, communieating with the same a short distance in wardly from the forward end thereof as is clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The ducts 11 extend downwardly and vertically from the socket 5 and communicate with the surface of the plane a short distance forwardly of the slot 4. The ducts 4 extend forwardly from the socket 6 substantially parallel to the ducts 10. The ducts 13 extend downwardly and vertically from the socket 6, while the ducts 14 extend rearwardly at an angle to the surface of the plane, ,from the ducts, thereby distributing a plurality of openings in the surface of the plane at various places along the length of the same, as is clearly shown by reference to Fig. 5 of the drawings.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings the surface 2 of the plane is a shaft provided with a plurality of longitudinal grooves 15 between which the various ducts open, but it is to be understood that this construction relative to the oil tanks and ducts may be used upon a smooth surface plane as well as a grooved surface plane without departing from the spirit of this invention.
The tanks 7 and 8 are provided with a plurality of spaced openings 16 formed therein, which openings communicate with the various ducts 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, so as to feed the oil through the ducts to the surface of the plane and from thence upon the surface of the wood which is being planed.
The plane 1 has a shaving guard 20 carried by the forward end thereof, and positioned forwardly of the front handle 21 of the plane, so as to prevent the shavings cut by the plane from engaging the hand of the person using the same.
The guard 20 is constructed of a sheet of metal, which is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 22 formed therein, and which receives through the same, the shank of the handle 21, for securely holding the straight portion 23 of the shaving guard in engagement with the upper surface of the forward end of the planing body surface 2 of the plane 1. The rear end of the shaving guard is reduced in width, so as to fit snugly beneath the under surface of the forward handle 21. The shaving guard 20 is curved, so as to extend upwardly in front of the handle 21, and it has its upper terminal end 24 curved outwardly to form an abutment against which the shavings engage, for bracing them and forcing them downwardly preventing them from passing upwardly and into engagement with the handle 21. The rear or lower terminal end 25 of the shaving guard is curved upwardly, and provides for the limitation of the forward movement of the shaving guard. lhe guard 20 is made of resilient material, so that the shank 26 of the handle 21 may be placed at various positions within the slot 22 for regulating the length of the shaving guard or plate which extends upwardly and for wardly from the handle.
In reducing the invention to practice certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
WVhat is claimed is In a surfacing plane, a body provided with the usual opening for the reception of a cutting blade, upstanding sides formed upon said body along the marginal edges of the base, upstanding portions formed upon the upper surface of said body and extending from one of the upstanding sides to the other, said portions being positioned one in front of and one rearwardly of said opening, said upstanding portions being provided with concaved recesses formed in their up per surfaces, lubricant retaining tanks removably mounted in said recesses, said upstanding portions and said plane body being provided with a plurality of vertical and angularly extending ducts communicating with the face of the body in alining rows longitudinally and transversely of the face of the body.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
