To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. HoBBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Game-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination game tables and has for its primary object the provision of means for detachably securing the cushion rails to the table so that they may be readily removed at will.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent as it is better understood by reference to the following specification when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiment thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating the structure in section;
Fig. 2 is a demounted view of the securing means, the spring and fastening nut being omitted;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of a portion of the table rail with my invention applied thereto, and
Fig. 1 is a horizontal section through the table and cushion rails illustrating the application of my invention.
Combination game tables have heretofore been constructed with separate sets of cushion rails so that the table may be equipped to play carom or pocket billiards t as desired. However, no satisfactory means for detachably securing the cushion rails in position has been available and I have succeeded in perfecting such means as will hereinafter appear.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a table bed to the edges of which the table rail 2 is secured. 'Ihe cushion 3 is fastened to the cushion rail 4 which is provided at intervals with recesses 5 over which plates 6 are secured by screws 7.
Mounted at intervals in the table rail 2 are members 6 havin upturned ends 7 adapted to be inserted 1n the recesses 5 behind the plates 6. rlhe members 6 are guided adjacent their inner ends in plates 8 secured to the table rail 2. Plates 8, provided with projecting humps 9, are secured to the table rail 2 and guide the outer ends of the members 6. Springs 9 are disposed between the plates 8 and shoulders 10 on the 'provided with projecting finger pieces 12 at either side adjacent their ends. Nuts 13 are disposed on the threaded shanks of the members 6 and washers 14 are arranged between the nuts 13 and the operating arms 11, the washers lli being 'provided with lugs 15.to coperate with notches 16 in the plates 8 to prevent the washers from rotating when the operating arms 11 are swung.
The operating members 11 are provided with projecting Vhumps 17 which, when the operating members are swungto the position indicated in Fig. 3 or to a corresponding position at the opposite side of the members 6, coperate with the humps 9 on the plates 8 to draw the members 6 outwardly against the springs 9 and thereby firmly clamp the cushion rail 1 in playing position. Preferably the operating arms 11 are provided with tongues 18 which pass resiliently over the humps 9 on the plates 8 and prevent accidental displacement of the operating arms when in looking position. These tongues, as well as the lugs 15 on the washers 14; may, however, be omitted without detracting from the effective operation of the device. The operating arms 11 may be provided with single projecting finger pieces 12 without detracting from the invention, the only purposeof providing two finger pieces on each operating arm being to permit movement of the arm to locking position on either side of the member 6 and the easy withdrawal of the arm from locking position whenlnecessary.
It is my intention to equip tables with my improved locking means by providing such means at closely spaced intervals along the table rails so that the cushion rails are the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim: f
l. In a game table, the combination of a bed, a table rail, detachable cushion rails,
and' means for securing said cushion rails including a plurality of spaced longitudinally movable members supported in said table rail and having means to engage said cushion rails, plates through which the shanks of said members extend, said plates being provided with projecting humps, and operating arms rotatably mounted on said shanks 'and provided with complementaryy humps whereby said members are drawn outwardly to locking` position when said arms are swung about said Shanks.

3. A lockingdevice for game table cushion rails, including a table rail, a member slidable therein and provided with means to engage the cushion rail, a plate on said table rail through which the shank-of said member extends, said plate being provided with a projecting hump, an operating arm rotatably mounted in said shank and provided with a complelnentary hump, whereby said member is drawn outwardly to locking position when said arm is swung about said shank, and a spring embracing said shank between said plate and a shoulder on said member, to normally hold said member in releasing position.
