ALBERT HENRY BRANDEL AND FRANK GREER, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
UPHOLSTERING FORMER 0R MOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 27, 1917.
Application filed September 29, 1916. Serial No. 122,937.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT H. BRANDEL and FRANK GREEK, citizens of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Upholstering Formers or Molds, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates tov the art of upholstering, and comprises an improved former or mold particularly constructed to make a complete piece of upholstery with a finished roll at one edge so that it may be fitted accurately and aflixed easily to the back and sides of an automobile seat with out the aid of skilled upholsterers.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view on a reduced scale of our improved former mounted within a press, and Fig. 2 is a cross section of the former on a somewhat larger scale, showing a piece of upholstery in its finished state therein. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the improvement applied to a former having an irregular curved border, and Fig. 4 is a cross section thereof. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail, showing the spring lock, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a simple form of the guiding attachment for the follow board and slide- The invention consists of a bottom or button board 1 of any desired size and shape to support the buttons 2 and the piece of leather 3 or other upholstering material used in making the front or outer portion of the product, and .one edge longitudinally of this board is fashioned or equipped with a raised borders having a rounded recess, approximately semi-circular in cross section. This border may be made of sheet metal or other material, either rigidly afixed by an integral flange 5 as shown in Fig. 4, or secured by a hinge member 6 as shown in Fig. 2. However, sheet metal is preferred as it possesses sufiicient spring qualities to flex or yield slightly under pressure of forming operations.
Thus, after the buttons 2 and upholstering material 3 are in place, hair or other suitable filling material 7 is laid to a uniform thickness thereupon. This filling is covered by a backing of canvas or other suitable material 8 and a follow board 9 is then applied to compress the upholstering, using a screw 10 or similar device. The bottom board is provided with suitable holders or supports 12 for the heads of buttons 2 and the follow board has a corresponding number of openings 14 to admit the staple points of the button, while the upholstering material is of a size to extend beyond the border edges of the follow board so that a padded roll 15 may be produced and the leather and canvas edges may be sewed or otherwise secured together. A perfectly smooth finish and tapering formation is given to roll 15 on practically semicircular lines by employing a rounded border member 16 as a part of follow board Qadjacent the rounded recess of the curved border piece 4, and where a hinged piece is used it may be turned on its pivot to compress the stock and form a roll 15 against rounded border member 16, or this member 16 may be mounted to slide in a rabbeted seat 17 of the follow board and to be drawn into the rounded recess of the border piece 4: to compress the stock to shape the roll 15. In Fig. 2, the hinged border piece 4 and the slidable border member 16 are operated jointly by means of a lever 18 pivotally mounted upon a post 19 rigid with curved piece t and which lever has a link or loop 20 detachably engaged with the hook-shaped standard 21 rigid with slide member 16. When therequired compression of roll 15 has taken place the parts are locked together automatically by springpressed latches 22 having right-angled slots engaged by pins or studs 23 projecting upward from the slide member 16 see Fig. 5. The slide member is also held slidably in place by'angle arms 24 secured to the side edges of follow-board 9, but any mode of fastening permitting outward movement or adjustment of the slide may be utilized.
Where the roll 15 is curved or of irregular outline longitudinally, the border piece 4: of corresponding shape is rigidly affixed to the bottom board, see Figs. 3 and 4., and this form of upholstering is more commonly used for the side arms of a seat, whereas the mold shown in Figs. 1 and 2 forms an upholstered back for the seat. In either case, when the upholstered product is removed from the mold it is completely finished and permanently shaped to hang upon an automobile body without skilled help, and the upholstering may be aflixed to the body by clamps or screws after the bodies are painted or enameled and fastened on the chassis. Compared with the methods and means heretofore employed, our invention produces a better and more uniformly finished piece of v in making repairs in the body the upholstery can also be detached readily Without alteration or expense.
What We claim is:
1. An upholstering former or mold, comprising a bottom board and a follow board provided With roll forming border parts, one of said parts being movably related to the other part, and means to draw said border parts together.
2. An upholstering former or mold,com-' prising a bottom board, a follow board, rounded border pieces for said boards movably related, and means to operate one of said pieces independently of the said boards to compress the upholstering on curved lines at one edge thereof. 7
3. An upholstering former or mold, comprising a bottom board having a curved border piece adapted to round the edge portion of the upholstering, a follow board having a rounded border part movable laterally relatively to said curved border piece, and means to lock said movable border part in fixed position With the upholstering compressed.
4. An upholstering former or mold, comprising a bottom board and a follow board,
a hinged border piece having a rounded recess to shape the border portion of the up holstering and means to produce an independent clamping action of said border piece upon said upholstering.
5. An upholstering former or mold, a bottom board having a rounded border recess, a follow board having a slidable member at its edge, and means to move said member toward said recess.
6. An upholstering former or mold, a bottom board having a rounded recess at one side, a follow board superposed'upon said bottom board, having a rounded part slid- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ably related thereto opposite saidrecess, and
lever mechanism to move said slidable part toward said recess.
7. An upholstering'former or mold, a bottom board having a yielding border piece of curved formation, a follow board having a rounded forming edge and a clamping connection between said parts;
8. In a device as described, a bottom board having a recessed border part hinged thereto, a follow board having a slidable part opposite said recessed part, and clamping means for said hinged and slidable parts.
9. In a device as described, a bottom board having a curved spring metal border part, a follow board having a slidable member 0pposite said border part, and means to move said slidable member toward said border part.
10. In a device as described, a bottom board having a raised border with a curvedrecess, a follow board having a movable member With a rounded edge opposite said recess, means to advance said member rela tively to said recessed border, and means .to lock said member in an advanced position.
11. In a device asdescribed, a bottom board having a border part with a rounded recess, a follow board having a slidable part with a rounded forming edge opposite said recess, a hook standard on one of said parts and a lever and link on the other'part to engage said standard. j
12. In a device as described, a bottom board having a rounded recess at one side thereof, a follow board having a slidable part With a rounded forming edge opposite said recess, means to advance said slidable part relatively to said recess, and self-locking latches to secure said slidable'part in an ALBERT HENRY BRANDEL.
