Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL OSCAR GOODY, citizen of the United States, residing at Ghicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Scales, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of scales which include containers having trap bottom doors for the receiving compartments into which the containers are divided, which doors are to be opened when the compartments overlying the trap bottom doors have received the predetermined contents, whereupon such contents are dis charged into sacks or other packaging means. Scales of this class are commonly employed in the weighing and packaging of small elements such as seed, grain, meal, sand, crushed stone, coal, etc. Each container has generally, in scales of this class, been provided with a diverter for directing the flowing matter into the compartment that is to be filled or loaded, such diverter thereafter being shifted to discontinue the flow of such matter into the compartment that has been filled and to shiftthe flow of the material into the companion and previ ously emptied compartment.
In practising my invention I employ two trap bottom doors which are independently operable, operating mechanism intervening between these doors and the diverter, and mechanism for closing each previously opened door before the diverter is shifted into association with the compartment having this door.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Figure 1 is a view in sectional elevation on line 11 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is another View in sectional elevation taken at right angles to the direction in which Fig. 1 is taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail view of a part of the structure as it is illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 4; is a detail view of a part of the structure as it is illustrated in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 1 looking upward, some of the parts being removed in order that other parts may more clearly appear; Fig. 6 is a section of is fed through a hopper 1, it being permissible to have the flow thereof constant, rather than intermittent, since the device of my invention avoids wastage where the packaging occurs at the lower part of the device. A diverter or valve 2 is pivoted beneath the mouth of the hopper and is adapted to divert the fiow of the matter being packaged from one side to the other of the partition 3 which. divides the measuring or weighing container into compartments 1 and 5. The compartment 4 has a trap bottom door 6 and the compartment 5 hasa trap bottom door 7, these trap bottom doors being hinged at their outer edges to opposite walls of the container. The trap door 6 has an eye 8 through which the lower end of a rod 9 passes, this rod being operatively connected at its upper end with one side of the centrally pivoted diverter 2, and in which eye such rod may move. The rod 9 carries a portion, such as an enlargement 10, adapted to be engaged by the eye when the door 6 is opened whereby the rod 9 is pulled downwardly to swing the diverter 2 from directing into the compartment 4: so as to direct to the compartment 5 when the door 6 is opened. The trap door 7' has an eye 11 through which the lower end of a rod 12 passes, this rod being operatively connected at its upper end with the other side of the diverter 2, and in which eye such rod may move. The rod 12 carries a portion, such as an enlargement 13, adapted to be en gaged by the eye when the door 7 is opened whereby the rod 12 is pulled downwardly to swing the diverter 2 from directing into the compartment 5 so as to direct to the compartment 4. Each trap bottom door carries :1 lug 14 whose bottom side is camshaped, as shown in Fig. 9. A cam roller 15 is provided for engagement with each cam lug 14 to hold the door having such cam shut. These cam rollers are mounted at the ends of a rocker arm 16 having a central vertical XlS. The mounting upon which the rocker arm is pivotally mounted is in the form of a strut 18 secured between and to the bifurcated portions 19 of the partition 3 whereby the rocker arm is moved bodily up and down with the container having the compartments l and 5, the container being adapted to an up and down movement by mechanism now to be described.
Two bell crank levers 20 are provided one upon each of two opposite sides of the container each bell crank lever being pivoted upon a stationary pin 21 projecting inwardly toward the container from the main supporting frame 22 upon which the pins 21 are mounted. The sides of the container which are adjacent to the veil crank lovers are provided with outwardly projecting pins 23 that are fixed with respect to the container and which pins 23 constitute pivot points that engage the upper ends of the bell crank lovers. The lower ends of these levers are connected by means of links 24 with the scale arms 25 that are pivoted at 26 to the main frame 22 and upon the free ends of which scale arms the scale weights 2? may be placed to determine the weight of the contents to be received in each compartment before the container will reach the lower end of its movement. Before the compartment being loaded receives enough material to cause the scale arms 25 to rise, or while it is empty these scale arms maintain the container having the compartments in an elevated position, the extent to which the container may be elevated being limited by the stops 28 engaging the free ends of these levers. When a predetermined weight of material has been discharged from the hopper 1 into the compartment being filled or loaded,. the container will descend, the limit of downward movement being defined by the steps 29 which are engaged by the free ends of the scale arms when these latter are sufficiently elevated.
The rocker 16 carries a stem 30, whose outer end moves upon the guide 30 upon the outer end of which stem there is a cam roller 31. l his cam roller 31 is in constant engagement with the stationary V- shaped cam 32. When the container is depressed the cam roller 31 will follow clownwardly on the cam 32 due to the action of the cam 1 upon the left hand roller 15 en gaged thereby whereby the stem 30 is placed under stress that will cause the roller 31 to follow the cam 32. When the container has been completely lowered the roller 31 will pass below the bottom or point of the cam 82 and at this point the rocker arm 15 is shifted to a central position to bring the right hand roller 15 into engagement with the cam is overlying it, the left hand cam roller being still in similar engagement with the cam overlying it which time the cam rollers 15 are in holding engagement with both doors whereas prior to that time only one of these cam rollers, the left hand cam roller, was in holding relation to the door 6 belonging to the compartment that was being loaded. hen the cam roller 31 is thus brought into engagement with the sharp end of the cam the weight upon the door 6 which is now in condition to be opened will have opportunity to swing the stem 30 still farther so as to bring the roller 31 beyond the point and to prevent it from going back to its initial position. As the load is dischar ed from the compartment d the container will rise forcing the cam roller 31 to ride up on the right hand side of the cam (as viewed in Fig. 8), whereby the right hand cam roller 15 is forced more and more into engagement with the cam 14; overlying it, until finally the cam roller 31 is at the top of the cam 32 upon the side opposite to that in which it is illustrated in Fig. 8. 'lhus it will be apparent that the door 6 is not opened until after the righ hand cam roller 15 (which was heretofore out of engagement with the cam 14 associated therewith) has been brought into holding relation with the other door 7 belonging to the compartment next to be filled or loaded; and, inasmuch as the door 6 has to be lowered before the diverter 2 can be shifted into association with the compartment 5, it is quite apparent that the door 7 is locked shut before any matter may flow into the compartment 5. When the compartment 5 is being loaded the same operations occur as have been described in connection with the compartment l.
Each door has a counter weight (6 7 by W which it is restored to horizontal position when the contents have been discharged therefrom. A hopper 83 underlies the doors 6 and 7 to direct the unloaded material to the package that is to contain the same.
Jhile l have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of the invention 1 do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, buthaving thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 1. A weighing scale including a container having two compartments; a mounting for the container that permits its up and down movement; a scale arm structure for moving the container upwardly and in opposition to which the container is lowered when loaded with matter to be weighed; a diverter for directing the flow of matter to be weighed to either compartment; a separate trap bottom door for each compartment; a connection between the diverter and each trap bottom door, each connection adapted to be operated by the opening of the door to which it is connected to shift the diverter to direct matter to be weighed into the compartment having the other door; locking devices for holding the doors of the compartments shut; and means governed by the lowering containerv for applying the locking device to the door of the next compartment to be loaded before the door of the other compartment is unlocked whereby the door of the compartment about to be loaded is lock d before the diverter is shifted to direct matter to this latter compartment.

connection between the diverter and each trap bottom door, each connection adapted to be operated by the opening of the door to which it is connected to shift the diverter to direct matter to be weighed into the compartment having the other door; a cam 1 L upon each door; an oscillating rocker arm carrying cam engaging elements at its ends and mounted to move up and down with the container, the cam engaging element at either end of the arm being adapted to en the cam associated therewith when the cam engaging element at the other end of the arm is out of engagement with the cam associated with this latter cam engaging element; a stem secured at one end to the rocker arm and carrying a cam engaging element at its other end; and a stationary V-shaped cam adapted to be engaged by the latter cam engaging element, the cams and cam engaging elements being so arranged as to have the cam engaging elements upon the ends of the rocker arm in simultaneous engagement with the cams pertaining thereto when the apex of the V-shaped cam engages the cam engaging element pertaining thereto whereby the door of the empty compartment is locked before the door of the loaded compartment is released.

A weighing scale including a container having two compartments; a mounting for the container that permits its up and down movement; a scale arm structure for moving the container upwardly and in opposition to which the container is lowered When loaded with matter to be weighed; a diverter for directing the flow of matter to be Weighed to either compartment; a separate trap bottom door for each compartment; a connection between the diverter and each trap bottom door, each connection adapted to be operated by the opening of the door to which it is connected to shift the diverter to direct matter to be weighed into the compartment having the other door; locking devices each for holding one door shut when its associate compartment is loaded; and means whereby one locking device is controlled to be re leased from the door of its loaded compartment when the container is lowered and the other locking device is controlled to lock the door of its empty compartment before the door of such loaded compartment is released.
