To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Ina A. MCCORMACK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more to a class of locking devices. l
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a lock adapted to be utilized for fastening the doors, shutters, gates, and the like of buildings, freight cars, and other inclosures as well as for locking various con-v tainers against being fraudulently opened, and which is of a form whereby -an alarm will be sounded to give a warning when the device is operated for being unlocked, the lock also having a fragile seal arranged.`
so as to be broken before the lock is operable, and this seal further serves to permit a record to be kept of the opening of 'the lock by the person authorized to unlock it as well as the time and place thereon. The' invention consists essentially of a casing provided with al shackle, or locking element adapted-to be moved so that one ofitsencls lwill be guided inwardly and outwardly through an opening, and in the casing is arranged operative mechanism for locking and unlocking the shackle.
Other objects ofthe invention are to provide means whereby an alarm may be carried so as to `be sounded when the mech# anisin is operated to 'unlock the shackle;

The device or lock has a casing 10 formed with a. front plate 11, rearv plate 12, and a peripheral wall 13 which connects the edges of these plates together. Through the upper part of the peripheral wall'l is an opening 14; leading into the interior of the casing atv the. rearedge thereof, and also through the upper part of this wall is another opening 15 leading into the interior of the casing at its forward edge, this casing being preferably of the -well known form used ordinarily in padlocks, though the casing may be o f any `desired shape and size. v f In the casing through its rear 14 is disposedone end of a sliackle,for locking element 16 whchinay besubstantia-lly the shape of an inverted U,andthis shackle is of a size whereby litsother `end may be disposed in'the'forward opening 15 of the casing. The end of the shackle in the rear opening of the casing is 5somewhat enlarged, asiat 17, and this enlarged end is pivoted, at 1S, to the front and rear plates'of the casing so that the shackle may be swung to and from the casing for passage of its opposite end inwardly 'and outwardly of the opening 15. In order to lock and unlock the free end of the shackle 16 when guided through the opening 15 of the casing, a form of mechanism, as 24, may be provided. The mechanism 24, as shown, is of a construction commonly used in padlocks, and 1 do not claim this particular type of mechanism as part of my present invention as various other forms may be employed instead. The mechanism 24 is composed of a slide 25 which is substantially Z-shaped to provide a vertical arm 25a, an upper longitudinal arm 25b disposed toward the pivot-ed end of the shackle, and a lower longitudinal arm 25c disposed toward and under the opening 15 of the casing. This slide is arranged in the casing so as to be moved in a longitudinal direction toward and from the forward opening 15, and in the lower arm of the slide is a slot 26 whereby the lower arm of the slide is movably disposed on two closely spaced guide pins 27 and 27 f* projecting interiorly of the casing from its rear plate 12. 1n the underside of the upper arm 25b of the slide, and at its juncture with the vertical arm 25'r1 is a notch 28, and extending from the top edge of the upper arm is a lug 29 adapted to be guided inwardly and outwardly of the notch 22 of the free end of the shackle when this end of the notch is seated in the casing. 0n a pin 30 projecting interiorly of the casing from the central part of the rear plate 12 is pivoted Jthe apexed part of a lever 31 which is approximately V -shaped to provide two arms, as 31a and 31h. The arm 31a of the V-shaped lever 31 is of a length so that its free end is movably seated in the notch 2S of the slide 25, and the arm 31b of this lever is of a length so that its free end is in movable Contact with the tapered portion 21 of the enlarged part 17 of the shackle. Projecting from the free end part of the arm 311L toward the front plate of the casing 10 is a pin 32, and extending from the lever 31 in proximity to its pivot 30 is a lug 33. On the lug 33 is held the arm 34 of a substantially lV-shaped spring, as 35, formed so that its second arm 36 is of a length to extend in proximity to the opening 14 of the casing and so that the free end of this arm is disposed in movable contact with the underside of the upper part of the peripheral wall of the casing. rThe apexed part of the V-shaped spring 35 is mounted on the pin 27 which is in the Slot 26 of the slide 25, and by arranging the spring in this manner it will normally serve to swing the arm 31EL and the slide 25 toward the forward opening 15 of the casing for causing the lug 29 to be disposed in the notch 22 of the shackle when in a closed position, as shown in Fig. 3. The shackle will then be locked to the casing, and to unlock the shackle on the front plate 11 of the casing is a manually opera tive bar, or member 37 which is preferably substantially rectangular in shape. The bar 37 is of considerably less length than the height of the casing 10, and this bar is vertically disposed so that one of its ends is opposed to the top of the casing. The upper part of the rectangular bar 37 is pivotally held on the pin 38 which is rotatable in a hole in the front plate of the casing, and also on the pin 38 interiorly of the casing is a finger, as 39, formed with a shoulder, as 40, on its upper edge. The finger 39 is disposed longitudinally with respect to the vertical bar, and this finger is arranged in the casing so that its shoulder 4() is adjacent to, or in contact with the pin 32 projecting from the arm 31a of the lever 31 as well as being in movable contact with the arm 36 of the spring 35. When the bar 37 is adjusted toward the front edgeof the casing the finger 39 will be guided up wardly for forcing the pin 32 and the arm 31a of the lever toward the rear edge of the casing. The slide 25 will be similarly guided for releasing the engagement of the lug 29 with the notched end of the shackle, and the shackle may then be moved to an open position, as shown in Fig. 1. When the shackle is swung open the tapered portion 21a of its enlarged part 17 will pass above the arm 31b of the lever 31, and when the shackle is again swung to a closed position this tapered portion of the enlarged part 17 will recontact with the arm 31b of the lever 31 so that this lever with the slide 25 will be reversely moved to guide the lug 29 into the notch 22 of the shackle which in turn will be locked to the casing.
Serving as means to permit an alarm to be carried in the lock so as to be sounded when the mechanism 24 is operated to unlock the shackle, for instance to allow an explosive body, such as a fulminating cap, or blank cartridge, as 4l, to be exploded, in the enlarged part 17 of the shackle is a passage, or chamber 42. rEhe passage 42 extends transversely through the enlarged part of the shackle so that the head of the fulminating cap will be disposed interiorly of the casing when the shackle is locked, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and serving as means to sound the alarm by exploding the fulminating cap, a hammer, as 43, is provided. The hammer 43 is preferably made of spring metal formed with a loop 44 which is disposed over a pin 45 extending interiorly of the casing from the lower part of its rear plate 12, and projecting from the loop upwardly in the casing is an arm 46 having a lug 47 extending therefrom. This lug is dispo-sed in an opening, not shown, in the rear plate of the casing for holding this arm of the hammer against movement, and projecting from the loop of the hammer is a second arm 4S of a length so that its free end is in movable contact with the arm 36 of the V-shaped spring of the operating mechanism 24. Extending downwardly from the second arm 36 of the spring 35 Vintermediate its ends is a short lug, orstop 49, and extending inwardly of the casing of the lock from its rear plate 12 is another lug, or stop which is disposed in spaced proximity to the chamber 42 of the hasp so that the head of the fulminating cap may abut thereagainst to prevent backfiring when the cap is explodec. Projecting from the upper end part of the second arm 4S of the spring hammer 42 is a head 51 arranged so as to strike the fulminating cap when in the chamber 42 of the shackle for exploding the cap.
F or the purpose of permitting a record to be kept, if desired, of the opening of the lock by the person so authorized, as well as tending' to prevent an attempt to fraudulently open the lock, I provide a seal, as 52. rlhe seal 52 has a plate 53 preferably formed to correspond to the shape of the upper' part of the casing of the lock, and this plate may be made of porcelain, or any other fragile iriterial so as to be broken when the lock is opened. The plate 53 has a lower straight edge, as shown, and projecting rearwardly from the back of this plate are two spaced pins, as 54 and 55. The pin is arranged on the plate so as to be`disposed through an aperture, as 56, provided in the front plate of the casing of the lock adjacent to its opening 15, and in this pin is a recess 57 for reception of the reduced part 23 of the.
shackle 16. The pin is arranged on the plate 53 for being disposed through an aperture 58 also provided in the front plate of the casing contiguous to the lower part of the opening 14, and thispin is recessed, at 59, for receiving the rear edge of the presser member 19 of the shackle 16 when locked to the casing. The breakable seal 52 is applied to the lock when the shackle is swung to an open position, as illustrated in F ig. 1, by inserting the pins 54 and 55 in the apertures 56 and 58 of the front plate 11 of the casing 10. The breakable plate 53 of the seal will then be disposed transversely of the upper part of the casing so that its lower edge will be adjacent to the upper end of the operating bar 37 of the mechanism 24, and this bar will thereby be prevented from being moved without breaking the fragile plate 53. When the shackle 16 is swung to its open position its presser member 19 will contact with the arm 48 of the spring hammer 43, and this hammer will in turn be guided so that the free end of the arm 48 will releasably engage the stop 49 of the arm 36 of the il-shaped spring 35 of the mechanism 24. as above explained. lfhe seal 52 is held against accidental displacement to the casing by the reduced part 23 of the notched end of the shackle being inserted in the recess 57 of the pin 54 of the seal, and by the rear edge of the presser member 19 of the shackle being' disposed in the recess 59 of the pin 55 of the shackle when the shackle is swung to a closed position on the casing.
lVhen the lock is opened by an authorized person, the name and address of the person besides the date may be inscribed on the exposed face of the fragile plate 53 of the seal, as indicated at 60, for keeping a record of the opening of the lock, or this plate may be used for record. The plate 53 of the seal is then broken so as to be entirely, or partly re moved from the casing. The mechanism 24 is then operated, as hereinbefore explained, by swinging the bar'37 toward the forward edge of the casing, and when the bar has been moved a short distance the finger 39 will be moved upwardly to likewise guide the arm 36 of the spring 35 for releasing the engagement of the arm 48 of the spring' hammer 43 with the stop 49 of the arm 36. The tension of the hammer will cause its head 51 to be swung into contact with the head of the fulminating cap 41 which in turn will be exploded to sound an alarm, and in event of a fraudulent attempt being made to 'open the lock the alarm will tend to give a timely warning of the incident. When the bar 37 is swung a suitable distance farther toward the forward edge of the casing' the shoulder 40 of the finger 39 will force the pin 32 and the arm 31a of the lever 31 to move the rslide 25 for diseno'a Gino Cub ID its lug 29 with the shackle, and the shackle may then be swung to an open position, after which the pins 54 and 55 of the seal 52 be removed from the apertures 56 and 58 of the front plate of the casing to permit another seal to'be used in conjunction with the lock in a similar manner. VrEhus my lock may be advantageously employed for fastening the doors, shutters, gates, andthe like of buildings and other kinclosures keeping any other suitable against being surreptitiously opened as well as permitting an accurate record to be kept ot the authorized opening of the lock.
ln the foregoing description, l have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but l do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as l am aware that meditications may be made therein without dcparting from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, here'lore l reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.

5. ln a lock with a casing having a shackle adapted to be moved inwardly and outwardly through an opening in the casing, and the said casing being provided with mechanism for locking and unlocking the shackle, an alarm removably carried in the casing, spring actuated means in the casing, operable for sounding the alarm, a member on the casing, manually adjustable for operating the spring actuating means and for subsequently operating the mechanism to unlock the shackle when locked, and a 'fragile seal detach-ably held on the casing so that the seal will be required to be broken to permit the adjustable member to be operated.

7. ln a lock with a casing having two spaced openings, with av shackle having one of its ends disposed in one ol the openings of the casing and this end of the shackle being pivoted to the casing so that the shackle may be swung inwardly and outwardly of the second opening of thecasing, mechanism in the casing for locking the shackle when its free end is guided in the second opening of the casing, a chamber in the shackle for permitting an explosive element to be removably carried therein, and means in the casing, adapted to be positioned by the opening of the shackle for exploding the explosive element, and the said exploding means being subsequently operated to explode the explosive element by the operation of the mechanism to unlock the shackle when closed upon and locked to the casing.

In a lock with a casing having two spaced openings, with a shackle having one of its ends disposed in one of the openings of the casing and this being pivoted to the casing so that 'the shackle maybe swung for its free end to be guided inwardly and outwardly of the second opening of the casing, mechanism in the casing for locking the shackle when its free end is guided in the second opening of the casing, means in the casing for permitting an explosive element to be removably carried therein, a spring actuated hammer in the casing, adapted to be releasably locked in position by the opening of the shackle for exploding the explosive element, a member on the casing, manually adjustable for releasing the hammer as well as for operating the mechanism to unlock the shackle when closed upon and locked to the casing, and a fragile seal detachably held on the casing so that the seal will be required to be broken to permit the adjustable member to be operated.
