conmn RECEIVER ann n'ETEcToa :ron wxnELEssnsE.
To all 'whom it may concern;`
Be it known that I, FRANK WALLnEno, a
' citizen ot' the United States,-and a resident lreceiving wireless messages, the combined receiver and detector being held by the hand to the ear.
A more specific object of the invention is the provision of a wireless receiving device which vembodies a detector bridged across the terminals of the electromagnet of the telephone receiver and mounted Within the casing of the receiver just under the diaphragm, and associated with the receiver and mounted on the casing thereof 1s a rheostat in series with the .telephone electromagnet and detector, so that the device can be adjusted for various Wave lengths.
lVith such objects in view, and others which wiil appear as the description pro ceeds. the invention comprises various novel features' of' construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
ln the accompanying drawing which illustrates one embodiment of the invention, and wherein similar characters of reference indi- -catc corresponding parts in all the views,
Figure l is a side view of the receiving device with a portion of the casing removed l to show the resistance wires of the rheostat;
`rig. 2 is a back View of the device;
Fig. 25 is a central vertical section;
l"ig. l is a lront view with the diaphragm, holding rap rcn'ioved; and
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view of the variousr circuit; connections.
li-icrrilng to the drawing, the device comprises a casing .1 composed of two concentric ('fy-lindrical shells 1 and a rear plate or head fl having au annular flange 4 t0 whit?-c .fhe shells are iittcd, a cup-shaped Specification of Letters Patent:
Application led September 21, 1915. Serial No. 51,769.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
holder 5 fitting into the shells, and a cappiece 6 which screws onto the cup or holder 5 so as to clamp between 'the capi 6 and holder the diaphragm -7 of the telephone transmitter. In the cup-shaped holder is the electro-magnet 8 which operates on the diaphragm to emit sound vibrations through the opening 9 of the lcap 6. The ends 10 and 11 of the magnet ywindings 12 are connected with terminal plates 13 and 14 respectively'` mounted on a supporting ring 15 within the holder 5. The terminal 13 is connected by a wire -16 with a binding post 17 on the ear plate 3 of the device, which binding post is adapted lto be connected to ground, as shown in Fig. 5. The f other terminal 14 of the electro-magnet is connected by a wire 1? with a movable contact 19 of a rheostat 2 0, the circular row of contact points 21 and the contact 19 being mounted in the rear plate 3 of the casing. One of the terminal contact points of the rheostat is connected by a wire 22 with a binding post 28 that is adapted to be connected with an aerial conductor 24 which may be any metal object, structure, Wire or the like suitable to answer as an antenna. The resistance windings 24 of the rheostat are coiled around the inner Yshell 2 of the casing and are surrounded by -the outer shell 1, leads 25 being taken oil from the windings to the respective Contact points 21. A detector 26 is shunted across the terminals 13 and 14 of the telephone electromagnet. This detector comprises a suitable crystal 27 resting on a conductor plate 28 that is connected by a wire 29 with the terminal 13, and bearing on the crystal is a conductor 30 in the form of a wire which is connected with the tcrminalll. The plate 28 and crystal 27 are suitably supported and incased or embedded in some plastic insulating material 31, the detector being positioned to one side of the electromagnet and under or behind the diaphragm 7. ccordin"` to this ari rangement the three essential elements of a receiving outfit, namely, the telephone receivcr. the detector and variable resistance, are all mounted in a single casing 'to constitute a unitary device, and to make use of thc-device it is merely necessary to connor-,t the binding posts 17 and 23 by wires with the ground'and some suitable part that will act as an antenna.-
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanymg draw iii inge. ehe edi-einziges oi" 'the consiiueaion end ineivhod of operacion Wiii be readily onderlsinood by those sirilied in. ehe eri to which.'
