Description

V. K. JOHNSON.
THOLLEY WHEEL.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 8,1916. 1,219,820. Pategted Mar. 20, 1917.

TROLLEY-WHEEL.
Application filed May 8, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINCENT K. JOHN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley- Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trolley wheels and the object is to provide a wheel adapted to remove ice and sleet rapidly from the wire, and to cause the resulting accumulation of broken ice and slush to be drained out of the wheel and discharged by centrifugal action instead of packing and refreezing in the recesses to negative the ice and sleet removing eificiency of the device.
I accomplish the objects of the invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure l is a side elevation and partial section on the line 22 of Fig. 2, of a trolley wheel embodying my invention and Fig. 2-
is a front elevation and partial section of same on the line 11 of Fig. 1.
I have shown a wheel comprising a hubportion 3, having a central hole 4:, for the usual stud on which such wheels are mounted. Integral with said hub is a web 5, and surrounding the Web is an integral rim (3, with an annular groove 7 to receive the wire.
A multiplicity of clearing spaces 8 are formed through both flanges of the rim, but without extending clear out, thereby forming radial spoke-like members 9, the outer ends of which are connected by narrow rimportions 10. The clearing spaces extend toward the hub past'the bottom of the groove 7 forming the latter into a ribbed surface. The sides of the resulting ribs are beveled, the bevels extending from one rim-portion 10 on one side of the wheel to the rim-portion on the other, producing an edge 11 at their junction which contacts with and breaks the ice and sleet on the wire, as the wheel is drawn forward in contact with it.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
Serial No. 96,258.
As the web 5 is very much less in thickness than the width of the rim 6, the clearing spaces 8 enable the broken ice and slush to escape from the groove 7 through them, and any tendency for this discharge to pack and freeze and to clog the clearing spaces is further obviated by 'beveling the web 5 where it crosses said spaces.
In the operation of my device the ice and sleet will be cut .and broken into small pieces and these will be forced by the wire through the clearing spaces and then thrown oif by the rotation of the wheel. The beveled portions of the web cut the wire strippings in two and help to prevent packing by enlarging the discharge outlet.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent .of the United States, is
1. In a trolley wheel, a web,- a rim extended laterally on bothsides of the web, said rim comprising a pair of flanges separated by an annular groove which receives the wire, said rim beingperforated by a plurality of clearing spaces which extend through both flanges of the rim and also radially of the wheel past the bottom of said annular groove forming transverse ribs in the grooved rim, said ribs being longitudinally beveled on both sides and the web of the wheel being reduced in thickness to form annular clearance channels opposite the major portions of said wire-receiving groove.
2. In a trolley wheel, a web, a rim extended laterally on both sides of the web, said rim comprising a pair of flanges separated by an annular groove which receives the wire, said rim being perforated by a plurality of clearing spaces which extend through both flanges of the rim and also radially of the wheel past the bottom of said annular groove forming transverse ribs in the grooved rim, said ribs being longitudinally beveled on both sides and the web of the wheel being reduced in thickness to form annular clearance channels opposite the major portions of said Wire-receiving groove and the Web Where it crosses the clearing spaces being additionally reduced in thickness on two opposite sides to form ice cutting Wedges at the mid-lengths of said transverse ribs under the middle of the downwardly pressing Wire and guides to direct the cut ice-pack into said annular clearance channels.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 26th day of April, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and sixteen.
VINCENT K. JOHNSON.
