IoE-oitisnrnn.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. ao, mit.
Application filed February 7, 1916. Serial No. 76,745.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OLEF A. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macomb, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Creepers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ice Creepers and the primary object is to provide .an ice creeper that may be attached to the heel and sole of a shoe for facilitating Safe walking upon'ice or slippery pavements and will be particularly useful for ice cutters and fishmen whose work takes them upon/frozen' ponds and rivers.
A further object of the` invention is the provision of an ice creeper that can be quickly and easily attached to a shoe and which will consist of but few parts, will be durable and ehcient in use and inexpensive to manufacture.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein v is illustrated the tion, in which,
Figure l is a bottom plan view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the' line 2-2 of Fig. l;
A foot-plate 1 is provided which consists of the toed-plate 2 and the heel-plate 3, which are connected by the brace-plate 4:. The foot-plate 1 is constructed of thin metal or other suitable material, such as will provide durability and make the plate as light in weight Yas possible. The heel-clampy 5 .1s mounted upon the bottom face of the heelplate 3 and is provided with longitudinal slots 6 through which guide studs 7 are extended and secured to the plate 3. The heelclanip 5 is provided with upstanding clamp ears 8 which are provided vat the corners of the rear end of the plate and are adapted to engage the rounded portion of the heel of a shoe when the clamp is secured thereto.
The sole-clamps 9 are slidably mounted upon the bottoni face of the toe-plate 2 and consist of the'V curved arms 10 and the upstanding clamp ears 11 which are formed of the iipturned endsof the arms 10. The opposite ends of the arms 10 are provided with apertures through which a pivot pin 12 is extended for joining the meeting ends of preferred form of my inven- 'and a bolt 26 is extended modifications in the the arms 10 together. A curved slot 13 is formed in each of the curved arms 10 and a stud 14 is secured'to the plate 2 and extended through the curved slot 13 and has its end formed in a point to provide a calk 15. The studs 14 therefore, serve the double function of providing guide studs for the curved arms 10 and callis for the device. A notch 16 is formed in one of the curved edges of each of the curved arms l0 and a v shoulder is thereby provided which is adapted to engage the V-shaped piece 17 for limiting the movement of the curved arms 10.
A semi-circular plate 18 is secured to the semi-circular heel-plate 17 and has its ends overlapping the curved arms 10, thereby serving to retain the arms 10 in engagement with the plate 2. A link 19 is secured to the pivot pin 12 for pivotal movement and its `opposite end is secured to the short end 2O of an operating lever arm 22. T-he lever arm 21 is pivoted upon the end of the clamp 5 by means of the pivot bolt 23 and the long end of the lever 21 is provided with a linger hold 24 by which the lever may be operated. Itwill thus be seen by referring to Fig. 1 that by moving the lever 21 to the position shown in dotted lines, the clamps will be made to tightly engage the sole and heel of a shoe.
A slot 25 is formed in the brace-plate l therethrough and has a lieel-clamp member 27 which is adapted to engage the front side of the heel of a shoe. By moving the bolt 26 in the slot an adjustment may be obtained whereby the de- 21 by a pivot pin vice may be made to clamp shoes of different sizes. Calks 28 are provided in the heelplate 3 and one of the calks is extended through a slot 29 which is formed at the rear of the clamp-plate 5 and between the longitudinal slot 6. A toe-calk 30 is formed at the point of the toe-plate 2. The braceplate 4 is bowed outwardly as at 31 and an enlarged opening 32 is provided in which the operating link and lever are situated so that the device may be as flat and as compact as possible. l
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable ice creeper has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood, however, that. slightchanges or minor details Of conend extending over the enlarged opening inv the biaceplate, provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots, one end of the said heel-clamp being enlarged and having one of said longitudinal slots arranged adjacent each edge of the enlarged portion, fastening elements secured to the, heel-plate and extended through said slots, sole-clamps mounted slidably upon "said sole-plate and providedl with slots, a plurality of calks carried by said heel and toe-plates, two of the dcalks in said toe-plate extending through the said slots of said toe-clamp, and a lever pivotally connected to the end of said heel-clamp to provide a fulcrum for the lever, said toe-clamp being also connected Ato the end of said lever.
2. An ice creeper including a foot-plate, said foot-plate comprising atoe-plate and a heel-plate having a brace-plate connecting them together, said brace-plate provided with an enlarged opening and the outer edge of the brace-plate being bowed outwardly, a heel-clamp carried by the said heel-plate and comprising a plate member, having its end extending over the enlarged opening in the brace plate, provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots, one end of said heelclamp being enlarged and having one ofV said longitudinal slots arranged adjacent each edge of the enlarged portion, ing elements secured to the heel-plate and extended through said slots, sole-'clamps mounted slidably upon said sole-plate and provided with slots, a plurality of calks carried by said heel and toe-plates, two of the calks in said toe-plate extending through the said slots of said toe-clamp, and a lever pivotally connected to the end of said heel-cl-amp to provide a fulcrum for the lever, said toe-clamp being also connected to the end of said lever, each of said toeclamps being pivotally connected with each other at their inner ends and one of the toeclamps having an extension pivotally connecting the end of said lever, the pivotal connecfastenwith an enlarged opening, a heel-clamp plate ,slidably mounted on said heel-plate, a
pair of toe-clamps slidably mounted on said toe-plate, said toe-clamps being of arcuate formation and provided with arcuate slots, one of said toe-clamps provided with an extension at its inner end disposed within said enlarged opening, the inner edge of each of said toe-clamps beingprovided with a notch, a Vshaped stop member secured to said toeplate and having its end disposed in a position whereby it may Contact with the said notches, and a plate secured to said V-shaped member and overlapping the said toe-clamp for retaining said toe-clamps in engagement with the said toe-plate. l
4. An ice creeper including a foot plate having an enlarged opening formed therein and provided with a plurality of calks, a heel plate mounted on the said foot plate and provided with a plurality oflongitudinally extending slots Aone of the said calks projecting through a corresponding slot, fastening elements carried by the plate and projected through the said slots, a pair of arcuate arms engaged by the calks in 'the forward portion of the said foot plate, the proximate terminals of the said arms being engaged together and having their curved edges each provided with a notch, the said notches forming a substantially rectangular space when the arms are in closed position, a .V-shaped stop member secured to the foot plate and having its end disposed in a posi tion to project into the said space', and a plate carried by the said stop member and overlapping the said arms for retaining them in engagement with the said foot plate.
ln testimony whereof l aiifix'my signature in presence of two witnesses.
