' LESLIE srHAcKNEY, or sm. Pani., ivr-naivnszora.y
'DRAFT Arr-manon ron :enows To 'alfwwm may concern:
:.Be-'it knownthatI, LESLIE S. HACKNEY, a citizenof the United States, residing at St. Paul,.in: thecounty yof Ramsey and State of Minnesota, `have' invented an Improved Draft Appliance'yfor Plows, of which the following is af specification.
My invention relates to an improved draft 'i appliance for plowsc Its object is toprovide means for attaching'the beam' of a-plow to a draft frame to permit a freelverticall movement within predetermined limits, of said beam.
A 4further object 'is to provide in a device of -`this kind, means for exerting a yielding downward pressureupon the end of a plow beam and also means for moving said beam to elevate 'the' same or detach it from the draft frame.
In the 'drawings,Figure 1 illustrates a portion ofa draft frame with a plow. attached theretoby means of my improved device; F ig. 2 is alplan view showing my ydevice employed to lconnect a plurality of plo'ws with a draw-bar and Fig. 3 is an enlarged *detail* sectional -view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to theaccompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate the frame of adraft vehicle and 11 the draw-'bar thereon. The numeral 12 designatesthe body of aplow and 13 the beam, said beam being provided with a gaging de` vice such as the wheel 14C revoluble upon the vertically adjustable arm 15 near the end of said beam. A plurality of plows are connecteclwith the bar 11 and operated identically; therefore, a description of one'plow and its draft appliance will sufiice for all.
lAbracket .16, having rearwardly extended branches 17 formed with vertical bearing surfaces 18, is secured to the draw-bar 11.
A yoke 19 is provided at the end of the plow beam 13, said yoke being supplied with a pair `of bearing plates 2O adapted to fit snugly between the bearing surfaces 18 vof the bracket 16.` A pin 21, extending transversely through the bearing plates 2O of said Y per and lower arms 25 and 26. This lever' yoke, is pivoted and slides at its ends in the opposed vertical grooves 22 in the bracket. To the shaft 23, revoluble upon the drawbar 11,is liXed a forked lever 24 having up- 24 is located between the branches of said bracket and the lower arm -26 is adapted to engage and raise the pin 21 to elevate the plow beam 13 secured thereto. Said arm 26 Specifcaticnof Letters Patent.
is also adapted, when further elevated, tov
detach the beam from the bracket and to remove the pin 21 from the grooves A spring 27 is interposed between the pin 21 and upper arm 25 to exert a yielding downward pressure upon the pin when said arm is lowered. A socket 23, formed in thel arm u i `Iatented'Maru 20, 191'?. a s 7 fAppiicationieaAugustas, 1913. seriaiivmsaaes. 1
adapted to mesh with a worm 31 mounted upon and driven by the shaft 32 which is supplied with a hand wheel 33 for turning the same.
In use, when the parts are in position illus trated in Fig. 3` the forward ends of the plow beams 13 fall and rise freely in response to the movements of the supporting gage wheels 14. IVhen plowing in hard ground, it is often desirable to exert a yielding downward pressure upon the ends of the plow beams to retain the plow bodies in the- 'ground and this is accomplished simultaneously in all of the plows by turning the shaft to lower the levers 24 thereby depressing the arms 25, which operating through the springs 27, bear downward upon the pins 21 in the plow beams. The ends of said plow beams are simultaneously lifted by turning the shaft 23 to swing the levers24 upward, the arms 26 on said levers being arranged to engage and raise the pins 21, and continued rotation of said shaft results in lifting the pins 21 from the grooves 22 in the brackets 17, thereby detaching the plow beams from the draft frame.
Having describedmy invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a draft appliance for plows, ,the combination with a plow beam having a gaging device and a draft frame therefor, of a support .secured to the frame, the forward end of said plow beam having a pivotal and vertically slidable connection with said support, and adjustable means to 'confine the vertical movements of said plow beam between certain limits, said means being also adapted to depress said plow beam and raise the same.
2^. In a draftV appliance for plows, the
combination with a plow beam having a gaging device and a draft frame therefor, of a support secured to the frame, said plow beam4 bein slidable vertically on said support and ee to rise and fall thereon, and arms fixed with respect to each other but adjustable on said support to limit the movements of said beam, one of said arms being adapted to raise said beam and detach the Same from said support.
3. In a draft appliance for plows, the combination with a plow beam having a gagingdevice and a draft frame therefor, of a sup ort secured to the frame, said plow beam being slidable vertically on said suport` and free to rise and fall thereon, arms mtegral with each other but adjustable on said support to limit the upward and downward movements of said beam, and means in connection with one of said arms for exerting a4 yielding downward pressure upon said beam.
