Be it known that I, WINFIiED MUDGE BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wire-Netting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of wire nettings of various shapes adapted to use as reinforcements for hat crowns, as flower baskets, animal nose-bags, etc., and in various other ways in a number of arts. Nettings of the character involved are to be made of a number of separate wires interrelated at the joints of the meshes by intertwisting two separate wires at each such joint.
The objects of the present invention are to provide a simple machine adapted to properly shape the netting and twlst the various joints in a quick, efficient and nearly automatic manner, to reduce the number and simplify the character of the parts in such a machine and to make the process as nearly mechanical as possible.
This invention consists in a shaped form adapted to the shape of the netting to be made thereon, having a suitable number of wire twisters of a novel character hereinafter more particularly specified, mounted thereon at points corresponding to the joints of the netting, suitable means for operating the twisters and certain novel means for holding and guiding the wires on the form, the character and operation of which will be discussed more fully in connection with the drawings, of which two sheets accompany this specification as part thereof. Like reference characters denote like parts throughout the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a machine involving the present invention and adapted to manu-.
facture a wire netting hat crown, the operating handle being broken away and not shown, Fig. 2 is a top view of the same ma chine a portion of the form being broken away toshow the driving gears and the face of some of the twisting gears, Fig. 3 is a ver tical cross section showing the driving gears and their relation to the twisting gears, Fig. 4 is a detail cross-section view of a wire twister taken on the line H of Fig. 5 which latter figure shows a face or side view of a wire twister in detail, Fig. 6 shows a top view of a wire twister, and Fig. 7 shows a manufactured netting applied as a hat crown.
The hollow form a is made of some suitable material, preferably metal, in the shape of the netting desired to be manufactured thereon, twisters b are mounted thereon at points corresponding to the joints of the meshes of the netting, a central shaft (Z carrying fixed gears c is mounted within the form 011 suitable bearings and is Operated by any suitable handle or auxiliary gearing not shown as may be desired. A central pin f and pairs of guiding pins f are mounted on the top of the form to hold and guide the wires to the first tier of twisters as shown in Fig. 2. Free ended'and centrally fastened flat springs f are mounted at the bottom of the form to receive and hold the free ends of the wires coming fromthe last tier of twisters as shown in Fig. 1.
The individual wire twisters Z) consist each of a twisting gear 9 having teeth adapted to engage with those of the driving gears 0, a radial slot 7' adapted to receive and grip the wires which are to be intertwisted, bearing disks in integral with the twisting gear 9' and flanking the same on each side, the slot 7' extending across the entire diameter of said disks and being tapered and beveled as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 to allow for the free twisting of the wire therein. Bearings 2' adapted to receive and support the bearing disks it are provided having open tops to allow the passage of the wires through the slot 7' to the center of the twisting gear 9 as shown in Fig. i. The wires from which the netting is made are indicated by e.
In mounting the wire twisters 011 the form it is necessary thatthey be set into the form as shown in Fig. 5 in order to bring the center of the twisting gear in the plane of the form at that point so that the wires of the netting will lie flat on the form and it is also desirable that the opening into the form provided for this purpose be beveled as at w w, Fig. 4, to prevent chafing of the wires during the twisting operation.
In order to assure an equal twisting of the wires at all the joints it is necessary that the twisters be all turned equally by each turn of the common driving shaft (Z, and this may be attained by proportioning the diameter of the driving gear and the twisting gears for each tier of twisters as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3; or a system of intermediate gear ng may be readily adapted to this purpose if it is desirable for any purpose to keep the twisting gears of one size.
It is apparent that quite a range of possible forms of netting can be met by the present device by modifying the form a; and by changing the locations of the twisters on the form various sizesand shapes of mesh ranging from square through all the forms of the diamond, can be secured.
In operation the looped wires 0 are hooked over the pin f and their ends then guided through adjacent pairs of pins f, as shown in Fig. 2, to the first tier of twisters. Two wires are passed into the radial slot j of each twister, and from there separated and guided to the twisters of the next tier where again they are slipped into the radial slots, and so on down through the successive twisters until. having passed through the last tier the free ends are slipped under the ends of the flat spring 7, shown in Fig. 1, where they are held while a partial revolution of the shaft cZ simultaneously and positively revolves all the twisting gears. The pairs of wires firmly gripped centrally of the twist ing gears in the radial slot (see Fig. 4) are upon the revolution of the twisting gear inter-twisted on either side of the relatively narrow gripping surfaces of the slot and within the enlarged and beveled portion of the slot illustrated in Fig. 6.
After twisting, the free ends of the wires are removed from the springs f, the gears reversed until. the radial slots open up and the netting fitted from the form, when these free ends may be secured to any suitable border, as suggested in Fig. 7, or finished off to suit the purpose in hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1. A machine for making wire netting having in combination, a substantially dome-shaped form, a plurality of wire twisters mounted on said form, means for simultaneously and equally rotating said twisters, and means for holding and guiding the extremities of the wires to be used.

A machine for making wire netting having in combination, a substantially dome-shaped form, a plurality of rotary wire twisters mounted on said form, means for simultaneously and equally rotating said twisters from within. said form, and means for holding and guiding the extremities of the wires to be used.
3. A machine. for making wire netting having in combination, a substantially dome-shaped form, a. plurality of rotary wire twisters mounted on said form in any desired pattern, the location of the twisters being determined by the desired positions of the joints of the netting to be made, means for simultaneously and equally rotating said twisters, and means for holding and guiding the ends of the wires to be used.
4. A machine for making wire netting having in combination, dome-shaped form, a plurality of rotary wire twisters each comprising a gear, bearing disks on each side of said gear integral therewith, and a. radial slot adapted to receive and grip the wires to be twisted, bearings adapted to receive said bearing disks of each twister and open at the top to admit the wires mounted on said form, means for simultaneously and equally rotating said twisters from within the form, and means for holding and guiding the wires to be used.

A machine for making wire netting having in combination, a substantially dome-shaped form, a plurality of wire twisters each comprising a gear having bearing disks on each side integral there with, a slot radial to the center of the twister gear adapted to receive and grip. the wires to be twisted, bearings having an open top to admit said wires and adapted to receive said bearing disks mounted on the form, a shaft mounted centrally within said form, driving gears fixedly mounted 011 said shaft adjacent to and engaging the various twister gears, means to rotate said shaft, and means for holding and guiding the ends of the wires to be used.
6. A machine for making wire netting having in combination, a substantially dome-shaped form, a plurality of rotary wire-twister gears mounted thereon, a central shaft mounted within the form, a plurality of driving gears fixedly mounted upon. said shaft adapted to engage said twister gears, each of said driving gears being so proportioned with regard to the twister gears engaged therewith that rota tion of the central shaft will turn all of the twister gears equally, and means provided at each end of the form to hold and guide the. ends of the wires used.

A. machine for making wire netting having in combination, a substantially dome-shaped form, a plurality of rotary wire twisters mounted upon said form in a pattern, each twister being located 'at a point where a joint in the wire netting is desired, a central pin projecting from one end of said form adapted to receive and hold the bent end of the looped wires, a series of pins in groups of two surrounding said central pin adapted to receive and guide the wires in accordance with the pattern to the proper initial twisters, a series of centrally fastened fiat springs mounted on the other end of the form adapted to receive and hold the free ends of the wire guiding them from the final twisters in aca substantially it cordance with the pattern, and means for gears on said shaft cooperating with said operating said twisters, all substantially as twisters to rotate them, and means for 10 hereinbefore set forth. guiding and holding the Wires to be twisted 8.
